    Wow. I had no idea that melocactus we're not a desert cactus. Then I did a bit of my own research, and it stated that melocactus are native to the Caribbean region and some South American countries, like Mexico and Peru. So, it makes sense that their soil shouldn't be kept done dry. Thank you for this tidbit of information, as I am about to order my first melocactus soon! Have a fantastic weekend Lyn and Hans! 🌵✌️😎❤️🌸

    At the start of summer this year I decided to repot my old Melocactus. It surprised me with very few roots. I got a clay pot, smaller than it’s old one which was not clay, and repotted it in a drier mix of growing medium. It seems ok out there basking in the sun. I don’t let it get much rain. It’s making those cute little flowers on top and I hope it’s ok. Glad I saw this video!

    It will be most interesting to see how that cactus recovers. Today I watched Nora Hepburn's video showing where a bit of her cactus got broken off. She just put the broken part in a new pot of soil and it has since started to grow well. Always good to watch your videos Lynn

    Just jam a few large crystals into the soil, because that will do the trick, haha. Clear plastic pots and glass bowls are fantastic for observing the root-growth and the bug action, up close! I'm very glad to see that you are such a careful, observant and caring gardener. It's so wonderful that you are skilled enough to turn a near tragic failure into an important message for the world of cactus lovers! Yes, I like it and I agree with everything that you said. Great video!. I over potted a cactus, and the roots started to rot. I unpotted it, and let it dry out for a few days. I then repotted, with new soil, and a smaller pot. I think I should buy some of that sulfur powder. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. SAL.

    hi,
    Great cacti - I hope it makes a full recovery.
    Just a suggestion from a life-time of growing many hundreds of cacti - I highly suggest you use terracotta pots whenever possible for all your cacti. It allows the soil to breathe much better than plastic pots and I've found plants are a bit less likely to root-rot in an un-glazed terracotta pot. I think you'll find cacti roots and plants are happier when not grown in a plastic pot. For me its always been a bit harder to accurately control the air and moisture mix in a plastic pot.
    Good luck.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a million for letting me know about the terracotta pots, I LOVE terracotta pots too they are far more attractive and are breathable for the roots, but I have had problems finding them but will seriously think about switching over to clay again especially with the plants that can be rot prone :-) thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and plant power from right across the Emerald Isle and have a WONDERFUL Wednesday XXXX

    I have the same issue with 2 of my Thelocactus and have tried a variety of methods to re-root them over the past year. Unfortunately it is at the point now where I might just have to admit defeat.
    One of them may still have a chance as it doesn't actually look unhealthy however the second one looks very sad and doesn't have much life left in it.

    Sorry the roots rotted but good luck with new growth, Lynn! I find it soooo hard not to water after propagating cacti/succulents. My head says don't water but my heart says do!
    Lynn, are you not worried about confusing the plants geotropism with that see-through pot? Maybe it is different for cacti than normal plants.
    Anyway, thank you for a great video and for injecting your happiness and enthusiasm into my day :)

      Gardening at Douentza Thanks so much Rachel for your wonderful comment :-) LOL! I know what you mean when it comes to the temptation of watering them haha!, I think I had kept this Melocactus too damp which caused it to lose its roots, Thats a really good question about confusing the plants geotropism because of the clear pot, and i hadn't given it a thought but I will keep a look out at some of the bigger garden centres for a nice pot that is wide as its the tupperware bowl is a bit of an eyesore haha! and I have been unable to find a pot wide enough but I think a visit to Johnstown Garden Centre will be on the treat list for this week haha! :-) Thanks so much for watching Rachel and Sending you and the Family tons of love for a fantastic week ahead XXXX

      I know what you mean, Lynn, about the lack of shallow dishes in garden centres, especially clay ones. It is such a pain! I love the half pots in clay for my orchids but they are like gold dust!
      You might just put some tin foil around the edge for the time being if that isn't too unsightly :)

    I have a Melowotsit with red and creamy coloured spikes I bought a couple of months ago however it seems to be colapsing slightly on one side despite putting out a lot of healthy new growth. So I've cheched the roots and they looked fine with new growth. It was very hot with direct sunshine where it was so I've moved it. I've put it back in it's pot see what happens.

    Hi Lynnie love, isn't a Mello cactus a tropical cactus? You say the Mellos do fine for you until about the 3rd year then they die due to losing the roots. Maybe when she's mature, she needs more water. Maybe try it one more time but this time water her more often when she's mature? Do you usually lose the roots at a certain time of year? Does she do fine and then in her 3rd year at "that" time of year, she dies? Try more water? Just a thought.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Maria :-D so sorry to hear about your Echinocactus, I would check that there are no hidden signs of insect pests and if all looks clear then I would re plant your Echinocactus into a well draining and dry cactus soil and ideally into a shallow pot, keep the cactus dry until the following Spring, if you can use a plant heat mat this can help to encourage rooting too, it can be tricky to re root cactus but it can be done, but if its your Fall/Autumn now its best to keep the cactus dry until next Spring ( April time ), and then from next April very lightly introduce water, good luck with your Echinocactus, and thanks so much for watching and wishing you a wonderful Sunday today XXXX

      Growing Things Thanks so much Chris for your lovely comment and for watching :-) I mostly use 1 equal part of John innes number two, Perlite, and Horticultural sand for all of the desert Cacti but some of my succulents like the Aloes and Haworthias i tend to use half Perlite and half John innes and not use the sand as i find they like a less drained soil than the Desert Cacti, and sometimes i will use Orchid compost for the Epiphyllums and Rhipsalis :-) Sending you tons of love and happy growing from across the Emerald Isle for a brilliant week ahead :-) XXXXX

    Habitat: Grows in the Caatinga in a wide varieity of soil types, including soil, sand and rocks of various types, including limestone, gneiss/granite (inselbergs), sandstones, quartzitic and other crystalline formations often sit in narrow cracks of solid rook rows in dry areas where rainwater quickly disappears.
    In my opinion if you are going to go shallow you should probably use a little more granite grit and pumice and also because it seems to be more of a geophytic type of melon. And by the look of the terrain in caatinga of Pernambuco could probably benefit from a pinch of rock dust. Best bet is to sacrifice some of your torches and graft the cephalium and the main stem separately so you won't miss your melon's inflorescent finale.. ..Ok so I've never heard of that either..

      Thanks so much Nancy for your wonderful comment :-) unfortunately my Melocactus died, the shame of it was it was starting to re root itself again but a few weeks ago I noticed it was going a bit yellow so I got it out the pot to have a look at it and it was hollow all through the middle, I was so upset, I think I may have kept it a bit too damp, Melocacti can be more difficult to re root than the other cacti but I think because it was re rooting itself again and then died I have an awful feeling I kept it too damp, I would definitely recommend keeping yours more on the dry side to re root and spray them with water rather than water them until they re root again :-) keep me updated on how your Melos get on Nancy, and sending you an abundance of love and heaps of happiness from right across the Emerald Isle for a FANTASTIC afternoon and week ahead XXXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there :-) the best thing to do is to take the cacti out of their pots and fully check over the root system to check for any pests and damaged roots and try to very gently tease away as much of the wet soil from the roots as possible, and then leave them un potted in a light and airy space to allow for the remainder of the damp soil to dry out and for any roots that may have been damaged to dry and callus over, then I would re pot them again into fresh well draining cactus soil and do not water them at all for at least 2 weeks to allow for the plants to settle into their new pots and for the roots to heal, in time they should make a good recovery with your love and care :-) thanks so much for watching and sending you heaps of love and happiness from Ireland for a fantastic weekend XXXXX

    Melos are easy to grow untill they make their cephalium. At that point they stop growing and put all their energy in the "bonnet" on their head. Potting and re-potting Melos with cephalium is always tricky : roots dont grow back that fast.
    Maybe you have to collect the seeds and propagate a new generation ?

      Hi Wendy :-D you definitely did the best thing to remove the roots and treat as a fresh cutting, yes once the cutting is completely calloused over you can pot up into dry gravel or a dry sandy cactus mix, but I would not start to water at all now until the Spring time, if you can overwinter your cutting in a warm and bright spot e.g indirect sunshine, and keep at a minimum winter temperature no lower than 12c / 54 F as Euphorbia lactea is one of the Euphorbia's that needs a much warmer winter temperature than many of the other Euphorbia's. you can lightly mist the cutting if the cutting shows signs of shrivelling before the Spring, but keep the soil dry, then in the Spring from late March onwards start to introduce water lightly to your plant just enough to damp the first inch of soil to encourage rooting, your Euphorbia lactea may start to send out roots before Spring even in dry soil too and you can keep an eye out for new fresh growth at the top of the plant :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending tons of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a brilliant new week ahead XXXXX

      Hi :-D Yes you can use Hydrogen peroxide solution too as its a brilliant fungicide, I know a lot of Orchid growers who use this on their plants when the roots or leaves rot or have fungus and they say it works well for other plants including cactus, thanks so much for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a sunny Sunday XXXXX
