- Let's Talk About Episode 17: How to Make a Sonic the Hedgehog Sequel
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie made by Paramount and Sega was a surprise hit full of heart especially after the first Sonic movie trailer resulted in criticism for the look of the titular hero.
Today Dan will discuss how to make a sonic sequel. Will Nerd Talk Dan's Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel predictions come true? Probably not, but Dan's Sonic sequel predictions hope that Paramount and Sega will put the same amount of love and care into their product as they did the first film.

This was a really good video essay. You understood what worked in the first movie and how to up the ante in the second one. Having robotnik conquer multiple worlds would be a sight to see. And also they need to include knuckles! His people were shown in the beginning of the movie
Thanks bud! That means so much that you enjoyed it. Knuckles would be great to see I’m a third movie. I just don’t want them going too overboard with side characters. There’s just too many for them to integrate well without losing some of the smaller simpler storytelling of the first film.
Seeing this video makes me happy and sad. Happy because it’s a great video. Sad because you haven’t posted a new one in almost two weeks :(
The video I’m currently working on doesn’t want to be done. It’s like the video from Heck. Glad you liked this one though! It was a lot of fun to make.
I'll be honest, I didn't watch the Sonic movie, but it's interesting to listen to you talk about how the sequel could tackle new concepts while building on the old ones. I prefer these sequels to sequels who just have a bigger badder villain and more action in them. Good job with this video, it's quite interesting!
Crim you gotta watch the movie. Sonic is just the most adorable thing ever.
Sequel escalation is a thing which I did integrate into my vision of it. But that escalation has to have some meaning. That’s why the last Avengers movies are so beloved while the something like the first two Thor films were a bit mediocre.
Wow, I love this idea!👍🏼You forgot about Agent Stone. What's your idea on how sequel would be if most of it takes place outside of earth? (Since Tails said : "He's here, I found him! I hope I'm not too late!") You should make another video with a second sequel idea on that.
That’s a good question! I imagine it’s just the games at that point. But I think taking place off Earth would be difficult because of the human actors. I always think real actors on a fully green screen stage looks strange. How about you? What do you want to see in the sequel?
@@NerdTalkDan I agree, the sequel taking place off earth will require more green screen stages with the human actors. I saw a behind the scences photo of the mushroom planet. It had a green screen and large mushroom props.
I noticed a lot of videos with Sonic sequel plots that Sonic should leave Tom and Maddie on earth and help Tails, then either return afterwards to them, or say goodbye and stay on his planet. I also noticed that many forgot about Agent Stone, and he could decide to either a) Find a purpose in his life without Robotniks' control anymore b) Find a way to bring Robotnik home (or instead of bringing him home, he ends up to where Robotnik is.) Or c) Takes Robotniks place and become evil, a new threat which would pose danger to Sonic, Tom and Maddie on earth.
With Sonic leaving Tom and Maddie to go with Tails will really destroy the fluidity of the first movie. Sonic wanted to belong and be around people without having to hide. Being with Tom gave him some newfound courage.
Sonic got what he wanted at the end, and I think to have Sonic just get up and leave would go against all those feelings and emotions in the first movie. The writers wanted to have more of the sequel outside of earth, which concerns alot about what will happen to the human characters. Tom is the best human that was ever paired up with Sonic in years. I don't think Tom will just let Sonic go with Tails.
Tom also has offensive and defensive skills, unlike Chris and Elise. He put his freedom, and profession on the line to help Sonic. Down to punching Robotnik several times, knocking him out once, considered a domestic terrorist on the news, continously insult Robotnik with drones pointed at him, ready to kill, and many more points to note. Tom would be a really good character to take with Sonic and Tails to go wherever the threat is outside of earth. I can't say much about Maddie due to little screen time she had, but she will stand her ground, and be supportive.
I don't really have a full plot idea, due to the fact that the writers and production team wants to go outside of earth, and they can't just let the human actors, especially the ones that have defensive and offensive skills, and gave Sonic a home, appear in the beginning and never see them again until the nearing end.
But short plot, I think seeing several scenes with Sonics' life living with them, Tails showing up, asking for help, and either Tom and Maddie comes along, or have someone follow Tails and kidnap them, or Robotnik in Sonics' world. I know Robotnik wouldn't forget all those punches and insults Tom gave him, since he showed up to the station, to tell him about the bully that punched him and he had him drinking from a straw for revenge. He might even use Tom and Maddie as bait for Sonic. Then there's Agent Stone, still on earth, the enchidnas if not extinct, if Longclaw is alive, if there might be more than one threat, on one or two different worlds. It's so much things needed to be clarified, explained, kept and resolve in the sequel. Sounds like a 2 hour movie with a lot of action, adventure, comedy, and family.
I always wanted to do a Sega style intro but never knew how to lol anyways this sounds like a good movie for the second one.
We’ll find out what they end up doing. But after the first movie I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt lol
Sonichu: The Movie, coming to theaters in 2077!
God forbid
Ok what is it with people and wanting to go with the most frustratingly cliched plotlines that I can't stand. You don't need to create forced drama between sonic and his new family just to make an interesting movie. It's not in charachter for any of them to act the way your describing, the first movie was a simple road trip and STILL managed to avoid alot of bad cliches then what you just wrote.
Hey thanks for commenting. Sorry to hear you didn't like my ideas.
Road trip movies are actually a great way to explore characters and their beliefs and then to challenge them with the person with whom they are travelling.
I'm not sure what you mean by forced to create drama. All drama in movies are inherently forced and unnatural by the fact that they are created by a writer. I assume you mean that conflict with behaviors that are out of previously established characteristics?
I think the things I wrote in the video are pretty in character for Sonic and the other characters. Sonic is still not aware of social norms and it was shown in the movie that this incarnation of Sonic is very much desperate for attention. The best way for him to grow is for him to be stripped of said attention, see his reaction, then have negative consequences from it.
But hey, this is all hypotheticals anyway. I guess we'll find out when the movie comes out!
Have a great day!
@@NerdTalkDan Sorry if I sounded harsh but there certain plot lines that I just get frustrated with and this is one of them. Your story has Sonic turn into a selfish jerk without any real indication that this was there before. He was a hyperactive kid yeah but he proved to be able to be pretty mature in the first movie. He got into that argument with Tom but eventually understood where the man was coming from with the decision to leave Green hills. Sonic is reckless but caring and protective, that was showcased perfectly in the first movie despite him being younger infact he developed into that by the end. If they were to go with your idea he'd regress as a charachter only to put him right back where he ended the first movie at.
My point being is there are so many more interesting things to do with this so wasting time on the typical charachter becomes an unreasonable jerk just to learn a lesson crap is just going to destroy the goodwill paramount got. If they are indeed planning to have him leave the human world there are much smarter ways to write it that won't involve any out of charachter moments from Sonic or Tom and Maddie.
@@Cloud-dt6xb Hey no worries man. I appreciate your passion.
You're right, Sonic is a kid and kids are kind of selfish. He found acceptance with the people of Green Hill, but kids don't realize that there's a difference between acceptance and unwavering attention. I think that would be a great character arc for him to grow into a hero or at least get closer to adult.
I think you're imagining something I didn't intend. I'm not sure Sonic will be an unreasonable jerk, he will just be . . . a kid.
Again you're free to interpret things how you like. I'm not sure it's out of character for Tom and Maddie to want to expand their family and have a child and as such their attention would necessarily need to be more toward that rather than constantly paying attention to Sonic. Sonic, who we saw in the last movie is desperate to be seen may just get on their nerves. It doesn't mean they hate him. Maybe they just snap. It happens in families all the time. Parents get stressed and in a moment kind of yell at the kid. Sonic who has only recently joined society may not be able to understand that people disciplining him, or occasionally being annoyed by him doesn't mean they don't like him.
Thanks for your thoughts!
