  • Gran Turismo Sport's online server is officially being shut down/closing on January 31st 2024. And that really bugs me. Why? - Well that's exactly what I'm going to get into in this 27 minute rant on the state of Gran Turismo at the moment, including GT6, GT SPORT, GT7's updates and community, and even how Tourist Trophy 2 factors into this whole malaise of issues which I have with the series currently, and have had for some time now.
So let's dive in! And of course throw in your thoughts on these issues and perhaps even others in the comments below...

I played GT Sport from the day it launched, until the day GT7 launched, I had 1400hrs total, Platinumed the game and did everything i needed, and I really enjoyed making liveries for cars and taking them into fun cruise lobbies
75% of the reason I played it for so long was because there was nothing else.
I’d rather have GT6 back too

I feel bad in saying that I just feel disconnected with GT7 compared to older titles. And everything you said in this video sums up my feelings on this title as a whole.

I agree 100%. PD communication is non existent. Is GT7 complete, is it live service, should we expect new tracks and updates? Who knows! I believe Kaz has lead this series for long enough. He has been the visionary since the early 1990’s to now…. It’s time for him to step aside and let someone else lead GT into the future.
Also, why is PD so bad with communicating with their players? Is it because they are poorly funded compared to other Sony 1st party developers, are they under staffed, or is it because they are a Japanese developer? It is completely unacceptable. When was the last time they have addressed THEIR community, besides during the update notes? I think the last time was when they got called out when the game launched, it’s been radio silence since then.

I believe that story regarding younger generation enjoying older GT games was at one of the FIA GT Sport events where he saw a group of the competitors playing GT4 on PS2 in one of the hotel rooms.
It’s odd that they fail to innovate upon what they built as they seem to try an reinvent the series from scratch. The game seems designed to impress critics since review scores are vital to bonuses, funding, etc. it’s not designed by a fan service focus group and as you stated - likely never will as Kaz always pushes forward with seemingly little to no input from the community being considered.
To wrap it up: I like the idea of playing GT7 more than playing it - this upsets me dearly….

  • @ShanesAutos

I’ve always done my best to enjoy GT Sport and GT7. GT7 still feels desperately incomplete. The only thing keeping me playing is the fact that my own car is in the game and that I finally have the second gen Impreza STI which has been in the series nearly 20 years and never even made an appearance in Sport! I’m still playing because I live in hope that things may improve and also because I grew up with Gran Turismo and despite the massive flaws GT7 and Sport have, I want to continue supporting the series. The one thing I will rant about before I finish up here is VGT. I know why they have them, marketing exercises and design studies for the manufacturers but I cannot emphasise enough that nobody gives a flying fuck about VGT cars. Nobody asked for them, nobody wants them in these “FREE” updates. People want real race cars and road cars. VGT’s are useless and used online by kids who ram. Please stop adding those pieces of shit and add cars we actually want.

Sad to say it, but I agree!!!! I am a #1 fan of the GT franchise and have been playing it from day one. I understand the Sport side of the game/sim as on-line racing has become very big, but it seems the game side has suffered each time a new one is released, I.e, there are strong features and cars that seem to be dropped when a new release comes along, to give some examples, a hole list of tracks, we don't even have Silverstone?? a hole list of cars, then we had things like "track editor", and the career mode is poor, there are loads more to list. All of these lost features cost time and money to develop, in my opinion should be retained in each release and built upon to make the game bigger and stronger. I also think that some car categories could be vastly improved, as you say Gr.3, Gr.4 are very good but other categories of cars don't make sense, more Group C cars can be added from previous games to make a full grid, instead of a mid 80's car against cars from the current era?? Current era cars should have there own category i.e Gr.1, Classics could be tidied up to make some very interesting categories like we have Cobra Daytona and Ferrari GTO both racing cars, but the Jaguar E-type and AC Cobra are road cars??? add the Corvette and maybe a Maserati and make the E-type a lightweight and we have a good T.T event both in game and on-line, we already have Goodwood!! Things like this could be much more realistic. I'm still a #1 fan, but things need to be done to keep the loyal fan base we currently have, with slight changes and some re-introductions that I've covered, I believe will make GT a bigger more complete game/simulator.

White hot, and spot on. At age 59 in 2019 I started simracing, on Sport, and played every day. Sport mode, mainly.
I was super excited when GT7 was announced, but a huge red flag was raised when PD introduced MTX on release, cynically AFTER the pre-release reviews were produced by hand-picked reviewers. Importantly, MTX were hidden from the reviewers
I now have a VR2 headset, and love it, BUT ... Where you give it a front-row seat as far as future PD devt, I'm not sure.
They have hardly touched it in 8 months. This, despite Kaz stating that GT7 was made with VR in mind. Look at the HUD - useless for Sport mode. No delta, etc.
Indeed, a tragedy when the game has so much potential. That a content creator like yourself is producing quality material that PD should be putting out points to the arrogance of Kaz, and the yes men who must surround him.
I have a PC, and am watching the reviews of FM with interest. I will have to consider playing Forza. Not exclusively, as I love my VR2, but I'm at the point of almost giving up on PD.
When people like Rory, Kie, and Kireth - who are GT7 regulars with large groups of followers - are now streaming Forza DIRECTLY BECAUSE of GT7's current shitfight, PD have a massive problem on their hands.
Your content, HSG, is top shelf, and thus qualifies you to make serious content. I feel your pain. You speak for many, but, alas, your words will reach deaf ears.
    March on, brother 😊

Wow... I did not expect the *ahem* passion 😅
In my mind, Gran Turismo is just getting through its "growing pains". It's hard to make something new while maintaining the old magic that made you great (ex: Star Wars, Marvel, Mission Impossible, etc.). It's possible that some things, Gran Turismo included, are only good for a season. Adapting old concepts for a new generation doesn't always work.
However, I've always admired racing drivers who do their own thing regardless of anyone's praise. Like when Hamilton signed with Mercedes or Max with Red Bull, it seemed outlandish, but when they started winning, no one was asking questions then. I feel the same way about Gran Turismo. Yeahh... GT7 isn't the best Gran Turismo game, but it still has a lot of potential. I'm sure Polyphony and Kaz are gonna build off of this platform to make something better in the future. Granted, I'll be well out of school, and I'll most likely age out of video games by then 💀

I feel inspired to make my own lol! I just wish more content creators would speak how they really feel about the state of GT instead of just wanting to kiss Polyphony's...and I guess Kaz's arse. Even if people at Polyphony don't watch YT videos about GT games, these videos still raise awareness to players and create, I guess social change within the community, and that can lead to more people taking a stand and expressing their displeasure with the current game. And we know Polyphony can listen to us since they have in the past as you said.
Considering there's so much discourse in the fandom, Polyphony needs to look at establishing some kind of channel of communication with its audience and maybe even have monthly surveys to fill in so that the fans can have an official platform to voice our thoughts. Because at the end of the day, it maybe Kaz's game, but WE are the consumers, WE are the ones paying for the end product, and WE are the ones that have been loyal to this franchise and kept it going, yet WE are the ones disrespected by someone or a company who seem to want to ruin their game. And using 'we' a lot might make me sound selfish there, but emotions are high right now with the past few updates being...rubbish. I played every main GT entry apart from 1. 3 and 4 were my childhood, and I feel blessed to have been able to be a kid when the early GT games were out.
But thank you for, maybe, going against the blind GT7 supporters and raising real issues that so many of us want to see change!

I disagree about the GT6 servers being closed due to server costs, but not because they cost too much to keep open.
They closed them because online was free on PS3 but paid for on PS4, so they wanted to push people from GT6 to GT Sport to bring in more money from having to pay to play online.
Now I suspect it's a similar thing, except the money they get to keep the servers up for GT Sport to them doesn't justify the cost. So they're closing them to push people to GT7, which costs more to buy than GT Sport, to get people to renew their PSN subscriptions which have just increased in price.
It really is just all about money sadly.

I gave up hope on Gran Turismo 7 (and probably the future of the series) about a year ago.
Didn't play much GT Sport, but in GT7, I got some races in Driver Class A, even some kudos in Manufacturer's/Nation's Cup races.
Let me tell you something, *it absolutely INFURIATES me that road cars are pretty much useless in competitive Online.*
Not only that, PD have absolutely no PR department to speak of, thus not being inclined to change anything (Daily Races have been broken for a few days since this comment, GT7 is pretty much a Loading Screen Simulator now) and don't even bother giving us any undertakings to fix that, they also seem to roll the dice about new cars to be added without any theme regarding them; come on, let me drive the TVR Griffith 500 that has been in every numbered Gran Turismo! :(
    How I'd improve Gran Turismo:
    - *NO. MICROTRANSACTIONS.*
    - No Roulette Tickets, prizes should be given after you won a certain amout of races, either offline or online.
    - No mandatory internet connection.
    - Road cars should also have some sort of a tier system, I don't want to drive in the same boring Gr.3 or Gr.4 cars over and over again, give the other 90% of cars time to shine!
    - There are still countless ramming drivers online, even in higher classes.
If PD are pushing Sophy AI, it could be interesting, but it might take some time to fully use that potential, same goes for VR.
As for E-Sports, well, they need to fix their countless problems in the GT7 Sport Mode first.
Like I said, didn't play much GT Sport, but I'm still sad about PD killing it in the near future.

I've played GT6 (5 and 4 occasionally) since the day I bought it back in Dec 2013, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. One thing I forgot to add... Why isn't GT1-6 on the playstation store? PD could be making revenue off older games from their past. What another waste of potential on that and possible new fans. I guess Sony is to blame too, because they are not prserving the older games. Sure, you could emulate them, but for those who do not, why not afd them to the PS store for PS5 and future generation consoles?

i’m glad this game is getting slain. it lost a lot of playerbase with the launch of a mainstream multiplayer version of GT. statically probably the worse GT in existence. Man, I’ve never seen you so pissed about GT7 and SPORT at the same time! But I do understand.
It’s really weird that SPORT, a most esport game lasted longer then a “classic” GT experience is weird, my guess is that KAZ hoped that a lot of the playerbase in GT SPORT was the Sport Players.
But the quote of “Who was this game made for” hits hard. I’ve been less interested in GT7 as the updates went on and I only did the daily grind on Tokyo and that’s it. If only we, as the community, could make ourselves known, that GT7 has been dropping a lot of players and even sport players. That we, as the players, feel betrayed with not only the trailer, which was clearly nostalgia bait, but with what GT7 delivered. As rolfvawe (I never get his name right lol) said, the SP in GT7 is non-existant, it’s a full on downgrade then SPORT (that didn’t had SP in the beginning. And the Café system is just dumb and not challenging. I hope we can talk to PD or SONY even to just fix their game, but it seems really far off tbh…

Thank you for expressing those thoughts.
    I'm a big GT fanboy, bought PS5, GT7 and PSVR2.
Recently replaced my Logitech G29 with a Fanatec GT DD Pro with loadcell pedal.
And while I'm happy with GT7 for some aspects like customization and car detail levels, I don't feel as much emotion as when I was playing 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6.
That's why I've booted my PS3 again and began to play GT5 and 6 again.
Their solo modes are WAY AHEAD of whatever PD is doing with 7.
There's a unique vibe with ALL the older GT titles (pre Sport) that Kaz doesn't seems to want in 7.
I understand that the evolution of the franchise reflects Kaz's own evolution (from a amateur/semi-pro car scene to a FIA one) but man, 95% of the players of the franchise just want to have the good ol' GT experience.
This is going to a point where someone made a mod for Assetto Corsa (Assetto Corsa Evoluzione) recreating an old GT career experience with AC physics.
And made by ONE MAN, it's way more enjoyable than the GT7 career.

Hi Mike! If those three pillars you mention on the video are truly what Kaz is pursuing with no compromises made, then Gran Turismo as a whole might as well be as dead as the dodos. All three aspects will alienate a humongous chunk of gamers, be by themselves or one in conjunction with another. Because any aspect of them will basically make gamers feel paywalled or alienated from any game, current or future. Worse, since Forza Motorsport is basically out now, the audience will feel inclined to abandon ship and go for the newest thing. While it's true that the newest Forza needs improvements in some areas, it's already showing signs that it's better than Polyphony's current offering. I honestly wish this serves as an extremely rude wake-up call for Kaz and he starts listening to the community rather than his own voice. Thanks for the video!

I honestly thought very hard about why I don’t put GT7 down and it doesn’t boil down to enjoyment, per se. It boils more down to a sunk-cost fallacy mindset wherein I have invested over a thousand dollars in my wheel, pedals, PS5, game, etc and much beyond that, my time. It has taken me a whole lot of time and effort to gather the pace I’ve got. To stop I would get rusty and it would all be for naught. It’s taken a whole lot of work to become only 1.2 seconds off the top 10 pace. A whole lot of toil. The offline is not enjoyable and I only occasionally dabble in online every one in a while. It’s fun but not what I prefer at all. The game itself gives me little reason to play it, seeing as the offline is a joke and offline is what I primarily enjoy. Sunk-cost fallacious thinking is why I stay and that’s not good for any game to have that being a reason someone is around.
I think Sophy would drastically improve my enjoyment. Some tweaks of structure and design for GT8 would satisfy me, to be honest. I’m sure they’re capable of designing a single player experience that is miles beyond the trash of GT7. They just need to get their heads out of their asses.

Kaz views cars at art. If you want to make cars in-game that are a fortune to buy, that makes total sense. There are cars that are rare, there are cars that are very valuable, and to Kaz, Gran Turismo is more than just a racing game. It's a medium in which to enjoy what he considers art. These $20,000,000 cars are important pieces of art and automotive history, and they should be reserved as a show piece for the players who have grinded and committed to the game as a reward, as a way to flex and say "Out of the millions who play this, I'm one of the 7 who have this". I do NOT mind that grindy aspect at all, and from Kaz's standpoint and understanding it, it 100% makes sense. You know what fucks it up? Microtransactions. That $20,000,000 car that you can use to show off your dedication and work and to flex on the plebs completely loses it's meaning when you can just bypass all of it, pay $20 and get it Day 1. It makes his ideology of cars being art get questioned in my eyes because you're greatly subtracting from their impact and status by doing that. I am of the firm belief that content like THAT in particular should not be there for everyone. If you don't want to take the game seriously that's fine, but you also don't get to complain about not achieving it's greatest accomplishments. Gran Turismo at the end of the day is not just another racing game, it's Kaz's love letter to automotive history and the automotive industry and it's future. That's the whole reason cars like those that are otherwise useless in the game are in the game in the first place.

I didn't really see this as a rant but more or of a statement of disappointment. I have a very short history with modern sim racing. Before GT Sport the last sim I ran was Geoff Crammond's GP3, on 486 PC, with a flight stick and modem. No on line head to head racing. You would cut the race legenth in to segments. Each player would run a segment save game then send the file by modem to the next player who would continue the race with their car. Believe it or not it was state of the art at the time.
During our modern plague and forced isolation I tripped over a TH-cam post on sim racing. Needless to say was blown away by the modern graphics and the modern PC GPU prices. Thought I would check it out on the cheap. Picked up a used PS4 Pro and GT Sport. I was impressed with the overall quality of everything but idiots you haď to race against. Realizing this was a simcade I moved to Dirt Rally 2, and Project Cars 2. Shortly afterwards GT7 came along and like a fool I watched the early reviews and downloaded a copy. Today the servers are down for DR2 and PC2 although you can still race head to head on PC2. So now that the plague as passed and computer chips are becoming more available it appears Sony want to us to move forward. Wants everyone to upgrade to PS5s and GT7. But the sport segment of the game is no better if not worse. You still have to run 6 daily races to get one clean one. I realize no one is perfect, mistakes and s#it happens. Even the pros don't finish every event, but deliberate take outs and dive bombing is pathetic. The desire to win over learning race craft is losted on children. So I'm waiting for the day when GPUs become realistically priced. Hopefully by then AMS2 will have a stronger North American membership. As it appears although quite expensive (over $200.00+ CDN with all DLCs) it's a more complete sim with more tracks, rain and VR at all of them. Like all sims it's not perfect but the development group are offering endless updates and upgrades. Also Assetta Corsa the oldest modern sim seemingly will improve forever.
The main problem with Sony is, they think they have the best and only game in town. They don't. Few things are worse than the waste of potential.

Reposting my comment to detox any negative reply that serve no purpose
I watched the entire video. I hear you. I understand your frustrations. I really do.
But I'm not bothered at all about this situation.
I'm a GT5 vet. GT Sport lasting 699 days in GT7's lifecycle vs GT6's 163 days is the more recent buzz for players of those games, GT5 only had FIFTY SEVEN days during GT6's launch to 5's shutdown isn't any better. I was utterly pissed when that happened because us GT5 players were forced to get into the next game far too quickly, a game without used cars, a career mode that's equally linear, has the same track usage, over usage of kart races and other pandering events for the new times, and too many tracks set on the newest tracks to justify the uniqueness at the cost of no Special Stage Route 5 event in it's entirety, thus acting as an insult to even older Gran Turismo players, as well as stuff like prioritizing Vision GT that a decade later is still not 3/4's complete and a worse soundtrack, amongst other many other issues I have with the game. This is already on top of the time frame when GT5 became immensely enjoyable, being when the Spec 2.0 update launched in late 2011 to it's shutdown, compared to GT6 already being complete from day 1 and thus having triple the lifespan.
I'm done hiding this burden. I resent GT6 fans. They were SPOILED compared to Gran Turismo 5 fans. I firmly believe that any game of quality, no matter how ridiculed the reputation is or how low the player count is, doesn't deserve the Madden or MMORPG Expansion treatment of being essentially replaced by an updated release that simply adds a few features and removes some as well. This is what happened to GT5 and because of that, I had to endure years of idiotic, braindead fans that only car about adding 75486183218 cars and 5316 tracks all because that was all GT6 had going for it.
THE. AMMOUNT. OF. CONTENT. IS. NOT. EVERYTHING.
I'm very sick and tired of this notion. GT6 fans HATE the idea of "Quality over Quantity", even though that's one of the golden rules in life. And those people continue to cry and weep at their servers getting shut down by GT Sport while GT5 players don't get any support. Yes GT5 is still a game worth playing today with the content it provides but it doesn't have the online dealership allowing you to purchase some Standard cars you need for the career mode such as trucks and the Formula GT,. It doesn't have the daily login bonus, rewarding you for playing the game everyday with double the payouts. It doesn't have GT Movies, letting you watch a bunch of different car related videos. It doesn't have any of the DLC that was later added, including the classic Acceleration/Top Speed tests. It doesn't even have the best intro in the entire series, the 2.0 intro with the beautiful remix of 5oul on D!splay. What does GT6 players lose? Daily Login Bonus, Seasonal Events, and racing with friends online. That's it. Boo fucking hoo.
*sigh*. That's the primer for me not being bothered by GT Sport lasting much longer than GT6 during the sequel's run. The Situation with GT6 vs 5 had a similar ratio, and was much worse for me personally. But then there's something else about GT Sport's shutdown that gives me some hope, even if the way it comes about is a matter of waiting than giving us the option in the first place.
My biggest issue with modern Gran Turismo titles is you cannot replay through the career mode without adding another PSN account, meaning adding another email, which complicates real life management for me. This is a result of the game needing to be online only, and one of the fears I had going into GT7 was the idea of GT Sport servers shutting down and thus, making the game literally unplayable as it relies on the online to even funtion.
This is most likely a shot in the dark I know, but to me, I read GT Sport servers lasting nearly 700 days in GT7's lifespan as PD taking that time to carefully develop and refine a solution to this online only problem, and making the entire game, progressing through career mode and buying cars, possible through a guest user. If that's the case, it may not come to fruition but I am hopeful, This is a great sign for the game's future in it's single player department. The Career mode gets a lot of flack for being added in an update rather than being at the start, but here's a fun fact for you. There are a similar number of races to compete in Gran Turismo Sport's GT Mode as Gran Turismo 3's equivalent. Over 300 races. The result of adding a lot more events to participate in through updates than GT7. Plus, it's laid out more like a classic GT campaign with different leagues and posters, as opposed to GT6 and 7. Frankly, it it wasn't for the overly long individual races in Beginner and the overabundance of competition specific events like Red Bulls or F1, I would honestly say GT Sport has a great career mode that lines up well with the classics. Unfortunately I wouldn't justify this opinion due to not replaying it in a long while. But with this server shutdown, this may be the spark of hope for future preservation of modern GT games. It's just a shame that preservation was even a concern at all for the franchise.
All of that being said however, great video HSG. Even if I disagree with the shutdown takes there was still a whole bunch of other stuff that needed to be said.

The decision to shut down the 6 servers STILL pisses me off. Also, the F1 car isn’t available in GT7, and I shouldn’t be robbed of content I paid for with the understanding that it was now mine to enjoy. Yeah that’s not factually correct obviously but it’s f’ing infuriating.

The one and only real question here, it's why any game would be purposely design to be killed?

Honestly I wonder how many people don't have a subscription for multiplayer that they haven't played a sport mode race.

I hope that PD can use the servers of GT Sport to make GT7 more stable finally.

Nothing in life is truly free, there's a trade -off always, in the case of GT7 it's "free" content at the cost of it being useless to most, whereas DLC content paying for something you want isn't free but the "trade-off" is most will use what they pay for ! I have said it for ages, GT7 is a bad copy n paste of GT Sport and they have barely unlocked GT7s full potential, it's a shame tbh and I think now it's Sophy A.I. and GT8 that's the focus.
I'll tell you who GT7 is for, it's for PD by the fact you're forced to play the game how they want not how you want to, noted by when there's new cars that most won't bother with they'll include new said cars in the next Daily or special event, then they'll be parked up in the garage never to be used again, GT7 doesn't know what it wants to be, is it a car collecting game ? a multiplayer game ? is does neither very good but it could do both very good indeed.

I agree with a lot of what you have to say here. GT has been one of the few titles that I have always purchased day one going back to GT2 but I have felt the last couple of editions have been a let down. Although I don't care about eSports personally, I think GT Sport was worth a shot if they wanted to try a version focused around that and I would have been happy to see that carry on as it's own standalone thing alongside the main series. GT7 has always felt lightweight and although it's not as big of a backwards step as GT5 was (in my opinion the worst in the series) it does feel almost like a stopgap while something else is being worked on. I really hope that GT8 has an extensive single player mode and a lot more community feedback is taken into account.
I often wonder how the Japanese GT community feels about things, I'm sure there must be similar sentiments.

Why should servers ever be shut down? If there are only a handful of people playing it, then the servers aren't really having to work much are they? Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare- released in 2007 - still has active servers! Long after the release of Modern Warfare Remastered (2016) and Modern Warfare (2019), not to mention a butt ton of other COD games, it is still going.
GT5, 6, and Sport servers should ALL be available!
