And it's only gets better, you are testing the Subaru against its biggest competitor...and you matched them AWD to AWD.

If driving to test the awd capability it should have also some a bit of skills navigating through the sand not just lamely stepped on the gas pedal. Obviously, the car won't budge in.
think these guys have an interesting perspective on the tests, like the head bumping against the hatch and the gap test. I wish they had a test for the winter, but it was good in the sand. Good Job

Looking for a Subaru. Why they chose to use a Forester over a Crostrek is interesting ( near equal curb weights?). I've never felt Honda had any off-road, or even difficult road chops to begin with.

looks to me that the honda had a harder time putting the power down the subaru didnt have a problem with the grip just the shorter suspension extension.

***** Actually this is the 2.5 boxer in the Forester. If you look closely in the video it only has one exhaust pipe and the 2.0 turbo has dual exhaust as I'm sure you know since you have one lol. I've seen your vids and love them and your beautiful Forester XT. In countries other that the US they have the wheels and front styling of the XT on the 2.5 boxers for some strange reason. I have a 2010 Forester 2.5X Premium and love it. Wish I had the turbo though. :-)

If you took air from the tires down to 15-20psi, I bet the Forester would have made it up the sand hill no problem and possibly the CR-V. I have taken a GMC Yukon up much larger sand dunes with street tires because I let air out of my tires so there was more tire across the sand. Hard tires are meant for mud and street use and soft tires are meant the sand. I watched a Jeep Wrangler get stuck several times because they never let air out while I climbed to the top no problem !!

Subarus are a lot better and they can do more and a lot safer than the crv
When all is said and done, it really depends if you prefer Honda vehicles to Subaru.
There's very little difference between the two.
Most will never be used off road anyway.
The Subaru Forester is the number one Off road vehicle in America. And most people who buy it use it for light off road such as trails, fields and cross country tracks.

I quite like the look of the CRV But the Forester is not ugly at all. Plus I think having the low centre of gravity with the Boxer engine in the Subaru probably makes it safer on the road.
They eliminate the advantage given by the Boxer engine by giving it an additional 2 inches of ground clearance. By my estimation, these cars end up having roughly the same center of gravity.
Overall Honda, is very nice, perhaps better ride confort than subaru, perhaps best look (personally i dont like that long rear lights, really ugly i prefer the Forester's line) and better interiors.
Off Road.
The Honda's 4x4 is good for a family picnic, But, for off road, subaru is the winner all the time.
Get the Honda if you want a pretty car for the city.Get the Subaru if you wanna go out whenever you wanna go . End of story

the steps to show on the Subaru Forester shows that you have the Dodge turbo version which is 170
horsepower but the vehicle you're actually driving and texting because I could tell from the front fascia that you're driving good turbo version so if you do it acceleration Andover the hard that you're going to be that visually not a fair test ps the Subaru with the turbo has 250 horsepower that should tell you everything you need to know just saying

There is a AWD firmware update on the Honda dealers regarding 2013 CRV models. This issue is fixed:
There is no rear wheel rotation while the front wheels spin (in certain situations). I have carried my update today after calling the HONDA dealer regarding my problem and my Cars Production Line (spoke with the person in charge of service bulletin updates).
So hopefully this issue of rear wheels not spinning and front wheels spinning is fixed. Please redo the AWD sand TEST:) after a AWD firmware update on the test CRV.
I have not done a test in sand yet but will keep you informed regarding my future results in the sand where my previous test was a disaster. (Rear wheels never engaged in the sand) but this was before the AWD firmware update on my production line. My CRV 2013 production line was before this cut off SHSRE5***DU013968 Europe

To drive on sand you should low tire pressure.
The specs were inaccurate from the chart. That Forester was also the turbo version going against a non-turbo CR-V. Honda doesn't have a turbo version for the CR-V. Having said that, the effort for a decent review was good. The translation was entertaining. The camera, and filming was quality. Thumbs up! We have both cars in our family and I even have a Subaru wrx. Subaru is very sporty but personally I like the way Honda rides. Honestly though, you can't go wrong choosing either one. Both are reliable, dependable, economical and enjoyable to ride.

However, CR-V beats Forester in reliability, no contest in that area. If you want a car that goes 200,000 miles with no major repairs, the CR-V is the one. But 2015 Forester has 1.9 more inches of ground clearance than 2015 CR-V. Which can make the difference between walking and driving up our 1/2 mile driveway in -10F weather. There's a reason Subaru is the car of choice in New England and upstate New York. Subaru obviously understands it's snowbelt niche because it's raising the Forester ground clearance while Honda and all the others are lowering their ground clearances. That's why we're trading in our 14 year old CR-V for a new Forester instead of another CR-V. The 2015 CRV has 1.3 inches less ground clearance than the 2000 CR-V. If CR-V still had the ground clearance, I would buy it instead. I guess I'll just have to buy 3 Foresters over 15 years instead of 1 CR-V.
Subaru > Honda in Reliability pretty much
Subaru have legendary reliability. People are still driving their Foresters 10 years later as a primary off road Vehicle. Honda does not make Great off road SUV's.
Honda's cars are excellent but the CRV is not in the same league as the Forester.
ryche rising Subarus are known for expensive and chronic repairs. The stories of them lasting hundreds of thousands of miles is b/c the owner has held onto and paid for these chronic repairs...not b/c the vehicle has been repair-free. Hondas are known, especially Civics and Accords, for going hundreds of thousands of miles with minimal repairs. The Honda engine is essentially bulletproof and will outlive the car
bighands69 If you want strictly long term reliability and lowest cost to own from a repair standpoint, you go with Honda..not Subaru. That's common knowledge. Subaru makes great vehicles that last a long time, but the boxer engine has chronic issues that plague nearly all generations in one form of another. The Honda engine on the other hand is bulletproof in reliability
***** i am well aware of all of the specific design issues that you have mentioned. there was a period during honda's recent history where poorly designed transmissions were used in several of their vehicles. i am not denying that. nor am i denying some of the other issues that you mention - the porous engine block defect in the '06 civic and up which was corrected, and the out of spec rear camber in the rear suspension on the same gen of civic. i am aware of all of these issues. however i would still take a honda anyday over anything else out there. if you truly think that ford or chevy (gasp) makes a better product, i urge you to go drive one and own one of those crap-mobiles long term. then the real kick to the crotch is when you go to trade it in and you find that your crap-mobile is worthless to the used car market b/c everyone knows you are driving a piece of crap
honda's sales performance is directly correlated to the performance of hyundai/kia since most of their customers are actually previous japanese-brand customers (honda and toyota mainly). they get lured in with the lower pricing and better styling but many switch back to honda b/c hyundai/kia vehicles fall apart. the sales figures are see-sawing right now similar to how it was between verizon and at&t for a while.
again, if you truly think honda is crap then go buy a ford focus and drive that for the next 10 years and report back. i'll be glad to listen to your stores. for the record on my end...i currently own a subaru and honda. my subaru is brand new so who knows with that but my honda is 18 yrs old with 257,411 miles. sure the engine doesn't sound like it was brand new - i have piston slapping on cold starts, and i have that noise where one could think it's a rod knock but it's not. it's just what happens when honda engines get old. the key thing here is, they will continue on like this for as long as you want to drive it like that. it's been making cold start up noises for the last 4 yrs. good luck with a ford engine though
The front bumper is different on the xt vs the stock. So unless someone swapped the front bumper, that is a xt. I have a 2015 xt, I know the diff

Why economy mode was on when off-road (green leaf light on)????? This is totally a bad idea. The torque distribution and the engine revs are low to make the AWD perform well at low speeds low gear situations especially when off road. I think you have to redo the off road sand test with the new AWD firmware update offered by Honda but also with VSA off (which was off in your test) and ECON Mode off too (which was on in your test). Also check if the AWD firmware is the updated one if produced before june 2013 (remapping simulation of an adverse situation was added so that it gives more torque to the rear wheels) and AWD rear differential oil was replaced at 20000km (first time flush is needed). My CRV also failed in sand but after the AWD firmware update it is much better.
Honda failed to provide a AWD lock mode? Was it because they did not bother adding this to their AWD firmware because it is not marketed for AWD enthousiasts and for its off road cababilities. I think Honda should add this AWD lock mode in order to perform better at low gears low speed situations (i.e. when VSA off is selected, AWD engages and disengages automatically when above 40km/hr). I think that this rear wheel AWD engagement failure (overheating) is sorted out by the new remapping AWD firmware fix, but again the lock mode would have done a bit better when off road. This CRV I am pretty sure that it had the initial AWD firmware. I wish it had the new AWD firmware in order to see how better it performs on sand. Mine perfomed well after the AWD fimrware update.
Styling is subjective and varies by culture. There is no right or wrong style.

1. Very detailed evaluations of what it decided to look at.
2. Idiosyncratic choice of things evaluated. I don't remember ever seeing other reviewers report on body twist, which, now that I have seen them do it, makes perfect sense to me, and everybody else should do it, too. Maybe they mostly do, and I just have not seen enough vids of AWD/4WD/Symmetrical 4WD cars to know.? I did think it was weird that the radically differing design philosophies for engines and transmissions was not mentioned, even in passing. Maybe it didn't make the cut for time.
3. In Texas, we would say that you guys seem like you are "just good ole boys" who happen to be from Russia, and who are closet smart asses, which, in Texas, is not infrequently seen as a compliment, and might get you a free beer. Any reviewer loose enough to call one of his own tests "stupid," is someone I want to hear again. Subscribed, Tovarishchi, e spasebo.
why is the voice-over translator full of accent? It's very hard to understand. Some of the tests like the body flex test is interesting though. Anyway, Subaru wins 10 out of 10.
