We have tons of history connected to our city and have bred alot of other music greats such as Little Richard, Otis Redding, and James Brown who spent alot of time in Macon and recorded most of his hits. I used to live just across the street from Rose Hill, parallel to Duane and Berry’s graves...this was back before there was a barricade around them. What was crazy was that my neighbor was Otis Redding III. I do believe he still lives there. I felt like I was living in a nice little pocket of musical heritage...which, being a musician, myself, was pretty cool.

I was in Macon in 97. Long story short, I hitched hiked there from the north spent abut 6, 8, months. When I got there there was no fence around Duane and Berry. Around November, December, 97, there was a chain linked fence around them. Remember?
Remember a little guy named Ken who sold orogomy art downtown and had a Joe Dirt mullet? Rumor had it he knew 2 guys who got drunk and tore it down.
I ate fried fried chicken Mama Louise herself fried. I watched her do it. Remember Skip at the H&H? He was a grandson or something to Mama Louise. He fed me free when I was broke.
I have a ton of Macon stories for the short time I was there. I wrote a book on my life. Trying to get it published. O'Neille's still there? The Rookerey? What about the piano player who's dad was a doctor? Kid could play. I remember a Beaver and Bo from Macon. Tim owned a bar can't remember the name of it, across from a Mexican restaurant BIG dude named Scott, tripped A LOT!
I had a very trippy experience in Macon

Could you please tell me what part of town the cemetery is at? Back in 1975 and 1976 I lived on Vineville just west of downtown and the freeway. Also does anyone remember a bar called Grant's Lounge? I listened to a lot of good music in that place. When I was in Macon I worked at WCWB-TV Channel 41. I believe they long since changed their call letters. I think I remember something about a news story of Dickie Betts getting arrested one night for disturbing the peace by beating up garbage cans with a baseball bat. Memories from that time are sort of fuzzy but damn it was a good time to be young.

Rose Hill is off of Riverside just before you get to downtown. I only lived there in the late ‘90s through the early 2000’s, but I’m glad to have lived there when I was relatively young. Born & raised in Macon, Georgia.
I spent so many days in Rose Hill as a teenager in the 90’s.
Still go as often as I can with my 2 daughters now.
In the 90’s Duane & Barry’s graves was where you hung out.
The Black Crows decided to for a band at those graves.
Then they put the fence up several years ago to discourage that.
    Rose Hill Cemetery is beautiful.
It was designed to be as much a public park as it was a cemetery.
The 9 members of the Woolfolk family who were all killed with an axe, allegedly by the oldest son, in August 1887 by the oldest son.

Glad you got a chance to visit Rose Hill! I went to school in Macon and used to visit the Cemetery. Back then, Duane Allman and Berry Oakley’s grave were secluded and didn’t have the fence. I think the family got tired of people leaving beers and stuffing joints into the headstones and increased security. The grave of Elizabeth Reed is around there, the inspiration for the Allman’s song “In memory of Elizabeth Reed”. The song’s background story that I heard is...interesting. If you have the chance, stop by the H&H restaurant downtown next to the old Capricorn Records building. Mama Louise took a chance and fed some long haired kids and the rest is history. The food is good there.

Now all you have to do is find the grave of Elizabeth Reed. If that is the graveyard they hung out in, she probably buried there too.
The story goes that they just finished writing the song while smoking some pot, needed a title for the song, looked down and noticed they were standing in by a grave that read: In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and a song was born.

Last time I was there about 20 years ago with my brother there was only Duane and Berry. I see they've added that whole brick and concrete structure with railing and steps making it easier to find because that's a big cemetery. You get a very humbling experience on this trip like how delicate and precious your life is. You need to get going and do what you want to do. And there is an inscription on Duane's grave. It's like a life code he stood by.

Lamont, I’m very glad that I found your videos. I actually like to look around at cemeteries myself. I just have not really went out of state to do it very much. I love to know other people’s histories, I think that’s why I like it so much. I have been trying to think of some that would be very interesting to see, and hopefully not ones that you have already been to see.
You may have already did a video on this before, but since it is close to Halloween, have you ever considered going to find the DeFeo family that helped inspire the Amityville house? Is. There an email where we can send you ideas?
