This movie reminds us of the terror that the young Elizabeth experienced as a ‘bastard’ under the reign of her half brother Edward and her half sister Mary. She was enormously brave given that her father, the psychopath Henry XIII, and others apart from Mary sought to have her assassinated or ‘disappeared’ as a child and a young woman. She was only 24 when she acceded to the throne. Truly Elizabeth the Great.
the main issue of Henry VIIIs life is that the union of his parents, who were cousins and surviving heirs in rival families for the throne, was part of a measure to end the War of the Roses, and bring peace to generations of civil unrest which really hurt everybody as well as the nobles involved, a war fought over female succession as opposed to male succession , hence his desperation for male heirs which he felt would obliterate rival claims to his heirs, and prevent wars and the final irony being that the constant marriages of cousins in his ancestry caused a genetic disorder amongst some of his kids, causing them to die as babies... All of Henry's wives were cousins of his at varying levels of closeness which also does not help the genealogical chart which shows this is fascinating his disappointment with his union to his first wives, Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn and the lack of male heirs, was somewhat understandable considering the background of his family and the politics of several generations. Even though he was ruthless with his wives, ( and i cannot say that i approve or would do same) one can make a case that he put the future of his country first

Enjoyable , but the music stinks. The drama is strong enough , that any but some true Tudor background score would be sufficient. But sparingly.
