I remember when they came out. Nice vehicles and we're all over the East Coast. Good on snow.

I always thought a Mazda mpv was a great cross between van and SUV, before SUV's had caught on and become ubiquitous.

I'm from the UK and have never seen one of these,a radical design though and expect it's quite versatile, thanks for showing us.

They were built on the pickup chassis which made them a very good little off road car

We had one of those, a base model, with a 2.4 four cylinder engine. It had dual counter-rotating counter balancer shafts like Mitsubishis.
When we retired it, it had 240,000 kilometres on it. I'm sure we'd still have it today except that another family member, whose name I shall not mention had a problem while driving. The fan belt broke, and it overheated. She didn't stop because she just wanted to get home. Eventually the cylinder head cracked, and more and more antifreeze had to be added until the end. There were no used cylinder heads for it anywhere. On to the wrecking yard.
Unfortunately, because it was a damn fine automobile, easy to work on, and a joy to drive.

I saw one in the street a few weeks ago, this are pretty rare nowadays. My friend didn't understand why I was interested in an old Mazda van, Can't blame him.

Used to see the MPVs all over Seattle; they and the Ford Aerostar were very popular. This was the era when the Mazda B-series pickups were Ford Ranger-based. Airbags seem to first appear on or around 1988 on the Chrysler products; in '93, I test-drove three cars, a Mazda Protege, which had those automatic seatbelts, a Honda Civic, w/ driver's side-only steering wheel airbag, and a Saturn SL-2, which had driver and passenger-side airbags. This seemed to make a sizable difference in insurance costs: Mazda, most expensive; Saturn the cheapest. Fun to see some older examples still running around there!

I remember there were a lot of MPVs when I was in RCAF at CFB Comox on Vancouver Island 30 years ago. People loved driving in the mountains on the Island.

I always liked the MPV is such an interesting cross between van and suv sort of a predecessor to some of the vehicles you see being sold today with the sort of “off road style” crossovers and what not.

In 2020, cars like these are so cool. Everything is a compact suv these days and none of them have the robustness of 90’s cars and older.

There's one by me with a 5 speed and Westfalia pop up camper top like the old vw buses for $2500. But someone spray painted it and looks like they offroaded it unfortunately. So I imagine its pretty beat up inside too. Its on fb marketplace here in PA.
