    I heard they also ruined the moral about skipping school. In the original, he's tempted to go to pleasure island, and chooses it over school. In this remake, he chooses to go to school, then the school kicks him out for being a puppet, then he goes to pleasure island. So instead of learning a valuable lesson about the consequences of his own actions, now he's a victim.

    • @Aenlorrocksinwow
      @Aenlorrocksinwow ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Wrong, he didn’t choose pleasure island, he was manipulated by Honest John to be sold to a puppet show and perform for it under false pretenses. Pleasure island was later and he still didn’t choose to go there. Pinocchio is still a victim in both movies.

    • @xxAryAryxx
      @xxAryAryxx ปีที่แล้ว +118

      At least in the original (not Disney's, I honestly forgot how the 1940 movie goes), Pinocchio tries to go to school in both cases, but he's naive and easily charmed by the wrong people. Pinocchio trades his school textbook for a couple pennies to watch the puppet show and he ends up joining them on stage for fun. Stromboli is angry because Pinocchio ruined his show and wants to throw him in the fireplace, but he's moved by his cries and decides to free him and gift him five golden coins (which he later lets Honest John and Gideon steal by being naive).
      As for Pleasure Island, there's a point where Pinocchio tries to be good and get back to school, but he's charmed by his classmate Candlewick who refuses Pinocchio's advice to come to school with him. Candlewick claims that he can't go to school that day because he's waiting midnight to go to Pleasure Island. Pinocchio is initially doubtful, but Candlewick manages to convince him to come along when he says that in Pleasure Island you can play all day and schools don't exist.
      Pinocchio is a victim of naivety BUT he does bring bad things upon himself because no one ever forces him to make bad choices, he's the one who chooses to trust strangers and pick what he thinks is the 'easiest effortless way' instead of staying with the people who love him and want the best for him.

      No, the moral is that pleasures in excess lead somebody to become a bum (or jackass, one might say). And how do bums get by? Letting themselves get exploited by greedy capitalists sneaking unfair contracts onto their ignorant behinds.

Even in the 1940 animation, the backdrops themselves seemed to come to life on canvas. They changed copyright/trademark laws so that instead of them entering the public domain after X years (they were about to lose Mickey Mouse) you got to keep them forever so long as you did stuff with them.
      That's why topless Winnie the Pooh entered public domain and is getting a slasher film. Nobody used it.

    Fun fact. I remember watching on the TV a version made like 5-7 years ago and even if you could clearly see it wasn't from a big studio that could produce a perfectly realistic puppet with shadows or texture they still made a better job with the CGI with a simple trick : everytime an actor was holding Pinocchio I remember it was litteraly a real puppet.
    And also the fox and cat were not CGI but instead a human lady wearing fox fur and a guy with dark clothes and honestly they kinda gave me a funny Jessie and James vibes.
    And (another fact) I'm 100% convinced the same studio made an obscure version of puss in boots and again it had the same "We don't have as much money as Disney but we have ideas" vibes and the same colours/movie style. This time the cat started with a REAL cat and as soon as he put the boots he transformed into a human actor wearing car ears and moustache always referring himself as a cat and you could totally see the actor had a fun time playing the cat.

I think the way a boy turns into a donkey, or jacka** , depends on how high their level of bad behavior is. If it’s really high, they completely transform and lose their voice, but if it’s low or medium, they slowly transform by just growing ears, tail and braying or even possibly having their heads change too. I think this could explain how there could be a few boys while completely transformed are able to still maintain their speaking abilities. This is just my theory or idea of how the magic of Pleasure Island works and how Pinocchio isn’t completely transformed and other boys completely transformed can still talk.

    What made the original 1940 Pinnochio film special is that it came right after Snow White, the first feature-length animated movie. Pinnochio was Disney saying "well we proved we can do it and do it well, now let's show em what else we can do!" And because of that, the film is beautiful and well-animated, full of whimsy and wonder. There's a reason "When You Wish Upon A Star" is the theme of Disney as a whole: one of Walt Disney's greatest virtues was his passion for fantasy, and his desire to make dreams and imagination come to life, and Pinnochio is probably one of the best exemplars of that virtue.

    Hello, Schaf! I know you don’t know me personally, but there’s something I want to tell you: PLEASE make a review, even a short one, of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio movie! The way it is adapted is absolutely phenomenal! It somehow told a story where it completely changed the format, like the time it takes place in, yet handled its source material with an immense amount of love and respect! It actually expands on the characters, the settings, and the themes of the original in a way that would make Disney jealous! Seriously, it feels like you are watching Laika at the top of its game!

    My biggest issue with this remake is they changed events related to the story in ways that ruin the overall message. Pinocchio in the original film is convinced to join the puppet show instead of going to school. This is why he faces the consequences of his actions. In this movie he actually makes it to school, defeating the purpose of the life lesson. When Pinocchio goes to Pleasure Island he indulges in smoking and even implies he was breaking things with an axe. He's then transformed into a donkey which was a metaphor for saying he was being a jackass. In contrast in this movie he refused to break anything, there weren't any cigars, and kids drinking root beer is hardly a problem. Once again this movie missed the true purpose of why the scene worked in the original. Being turned into a half donkey in this movie isn't justified.
    The whole point of the original film is that Pinocchio doesn't know right from wrong and he's easily lead astray. And when he makes the wrong choices there are consequences for his actions. These experiences are meant to build his character into an individual that learned from his mistakes and eventually chooses to do the right thing. But in this movie he's already trying to do the right thing all along. Sure, he's easily convinced to do the wrong thing a few times almost choosing not to go to school, but Jiminy catches up with him convincing Pinocchio to go to school before he could complete his bad decision. Then there's the time where he selflessly put Geppetto before the puppet show and his donkey ears and tail vanish. The problem with this scene is it has no meaning because he never really tried to do anything wrong in the first place. When the plot is about learning from your mistakes and then the movie doesn't allow you to make them in the first place, you have failed to make a faithful adaptation.

      Not only do they disregard their old movies as no longer good enough, but they actively try to villify them as 'outdated' or 'problematic' material (Which in some cases, is true. Their WW2 propaganda for example.) Something that tickles the fancy of their zoomer audience.
      We can't have bad things happen to our protagonists anymore, there's no room for growth, no room for lessons or morals, no room for character development arcs. No no no. That's too much for general audiences to handle.
      All Disney cares about now is making watered down, easily digestible product- I mean 'movies' based on nostalgic IPs that ultimately leave no impact on the viewer and exist solely to make money and offend as few people as humanly possible.

    The first problem with all these remakes is this: the beats are all there, but the rhythm is all off. The beat is the bare skeleton structure of the song. Rhythm is how the song is built on that structure. Film is the same way, but with scripts. If that skeletal structure is off kilter, then the entire thing is thrown off. You can only do so much with a bad script. Everything is THERE structurally. But it's the pacing that's throwing everything off. The donkey scene is a great example of completely missing the mark, as well as the stampede scene.
    The second problem with the remakes, the ones that don't at least ATTEMPT to do new things, is that they hinge on your knowledge of the original to get that emotional payoff. BUT even THEN, the other problem within that, is they fast travel to the highlight vs having proper buildup. Like look at Nala reuniting with Simba, Aladdin's introduction song "One Jump Ahead", Mulan's Decision, the West Wing incident. The scenes start out fine, but as they go on it just fumbles entirely. You notice something just feels off. And that's why that payoff isn't there. Not just because you've seen it before, but because you feel like you missed the point. And the BUILDUP is what MAKES that highlight....A HIGHLIGHT. It's screenwriting 101.
    Some of the remakes honestly aren't BAD, _Beauty and the Beast,_ _Aladdin,_ and _The Jungle Book_ are at least passible to good. They attempt to do new things, or in _The Jungle Book's_ case, is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT from the original animation. With movies like _Pinocchio_ ones that had BAD box office returns originally, ones that are pretty old from the 40s, 50s maybe 60s...The ones people aren't as familiar with perhaps...You'd think this would be a good opportunity for Disney to do something new with the story. They did it with _The Jungle Book_ and it worked.
    Here's my advice to Disney since it's clear they're not gonna stop: take a REALLY old animated film, and upgrade it. Don't just do SOME new things to try and fix past criticisms cause then that might just create new problems. Don't just copy and paste. I'll keep repeating it: Live action and animation are ENTIRELY DIFFERENT MEDIUMS. Animation can do things live action can only dream of. Live action has limitations, but work around those. Get creative. Film is a visual medium, use that to your advantage.

      The best live action remake is the Cinderella remake.
      It adds to the original film’s story in a satisfying way, like giving Prince Charming a deeper character compared to the 1950 version. It also actually puts the live action/cgi to good use, giving a beautiful new take on Cinderella’s ballroom dress.

I found this out when I watched the Code Geass movies (basically, a bunch of episodes from a beloved anime spliced together with some scenes removed.) The story, animation, voice acting, was all the same. All that changed was the pacing. And that was enough to downgrade my favorite anime of all time into some mediocre junk.

The puppet was a complicated animatronic made by Jim Henson's company so it came across as really cool and interesting. It had a lot of practical effects that made it stand out, more than the CGI monstrosity that counts somehow as "live action" in Disney's eyes.

      I second this, it actually did a few things BETTER than the remake:
      1) While the lying nose is used as a "Chekhov's Gun", the scene at school still teaches Pinocchio that lying is bad because he refused to admit he hit Lampwick, him using the nose to get out of the whale happens MUCH LATER and it's more to show that Pinocchio has grown smarter and more resourceful, instead of him being a snarky sue who immediately takes advantage of the nose and not really learning anything about lying.
      2) Oh yeah, Pinocchio gets expelled at school BECAUSE he was troublesome, not over some "fantastic racism" reason that is never flashed out or explored in this remake despite being something neither the book or the original 1940 film had.
      3) ALL the villains get their comeuppance, unlike this remake where only Stromboli gets arrested but meanwhile the objectively WORSE and more evil Coachman and his Pleasure Island are left untouched and the Fox and the Cat are still karma Houdinis that get away with screwing over Pinocchio.
      4) It's actually a good looking film with actors that look like they give a shit, instead of being OVERLY lit like this ugly sad mess of a Disney remake. Oh, and there's no toilet humor with Pinocchio stopping to observe poop on the street. (seriously, the 1940 film is a blueprint for greatness, and they added that in a "new and improved" remake. But the biggest reason people get attached to characters is cause we can relate with their flaws, if you just make your characters "good and nice and victims" all the time there's no arc, no story, and people can't find ways to relate or get invested! Wow I’m curious to hear from a copyright attorney about how effective this strategy would be

      I guessing that since they can’t control the rights to the animated films anymore maybe they are making the live action ones to control. They are completely different. The problem is nobody wants them.

      The funniest part is that Pinnochio is a character anyone can use- I forget the term but basically Disney only has rights to their version, not anyone else’s. So this movie is entirely pointless either way.
