While watching your videos, especially inside your cosy home, I always get back to your early times when you slept there in a temporary hut inside the cold stone building, and now it is so cosy and perfect. Even it is your home, it brings me warm feelings.
Watching Mr. Martijn work in the dark brings back fond memories of childhood in my local village,❤. Village people wakes up at 4 in the morning and starts their day and stays up until the late hours at night doing chores or just chatting around a fire or under the moonlight. And that sun's rays on half the mountains, too! Ah! It reminds me now of my beloved bowl-of- soup village! Also, tin roofs were/are wildfire resistant. Lots of incendiaries up there - and on wood storage roofing. Maybe fires don’t yet get that high_? But not for long. The original stone buildings/roofs made total sense: bullet proof. This shed roof is over the top. And the dormer just loses chickens’ warmth more in Winters, np?

The Doolard chickens go about their chores like Martijn is not even close nor hammering on their palace's roof. I always enjoy watching these contended chickens and their symbiotic relationship on that small plot in heaven
We live in the northern part Minnesota USA, its going to be -11 F today and -17 F tomorrow, we have to rub the combs of our chickens with coconut oil or they start turning white, then purple and eventually fall off. It looks like your rooster has some white tips on the back of the comb, I’d keep an eye on that. Love your channel we watch it every Sunday.
That skylight window should give some great ventilation in summer especially. But you knew that 😂. The shingles look fabulous, and on the woodstore. The aesthetic combination of stone roofs and wood shingles is perfect. I fret a little about you Martijn, working on your own in winter: should you slip or fall, or just be taken ill. I hope you have some good backup of friends locally. Go easy on that roof, and during the snow.
I hear the chickens saying, "Martijn! Do you not see the sun going down? It is time for us to sleep!" 😂 The film over the coop of the moon setting as the sun begins to raise its golden head, then the roosters call of greeting was perfection. It may be one of my very favorite moments you have captured. Thank you once again.
Wood tip for you Martijn. You mentioned starting to use your own trees for fire wood. I notice a lot of them are silver birch. Fell them just as the new buds are the size of a mouse ear. Leave them on the ground for a bit and the buds will draw the sap out of the tree and will thus dry your wood quicker for burning. You can also take an entire ring of bark off a standing tree and leave it. This will kill the tree and the wood will season so that when you fell the tree in a year or two the wood should need little drying
On the Northmen youtube channel there is a video from 4 years ago called 'Forgotten Ancient Forestry - Reviving Nature's Secret Superwood. Part 1. Ringbarking and Spotbarking' which describes and demonstrates this.
Nothing simple about what Martijn is doing. I live out in country and there are chicken coops and green houses here but much much more rudimentary than his. He shows possibilities. His heating system much more complicated as well as solar and water. All demonstrate commitment to excellence, peace and contentment. Would like to know why he chooses not to have a dog.
@@sherrycooper3382I also wonder about that. But I’m guessing that he likes to be free to travel. I’d not be able to live his life without my dawgs. But then, it’s the priorities.
He is a quick learner, takes in so many facts, details then does it right. That alone is something we need to learn instead of puttering around on the Internet watching kittens.
Dear Martijn, shaker roofs are so pretty. They give a building so much character. I’m glad you’re liking the look of them and mastering how to lay them down. Love the new window also. The chickens are living in style. Your painting is looking so beautiful. You have captured the beauty of where you live. As always your photography is stunning and the rooster crowing just at the moment of sunrise was perfect. I think because you live quietly your senses capture beauty more than the rest of us who have too many distractions. Thank you for sharing. ❤
That's the problem with humanity. Ppl just don't bother to explore or experiment with their godgiven abilities. That's perhaps why most of us keep coming back to visit Martijn. Love that man ❤ 🙏
Martin, I believe the tool you use the most is your headlamp ! Without it your work day would be considerably shorter, but as ambitious as you are you must go through a bunch of batteries. Your work is always way above average as is all of your work. I don’t want to feed your ego but you are the most interesting person on YT. Stay well dear friend
Grazie per averimi fatto fare questo bellissimo salto della memoria con "Lisbon Story " di Wim Wenders. It had been 30 years since I saw this film and it was nice to hear the wonderful voice of Teresa Salgueiro of Madredeus again. So time travel is possible.🙂
@qwxknn Thank you, for the information about the name of the film Martijn was viewing, "Lisbon Story". I too, like old Wim Wenders films and was wondering what the name of the film was that he was watching? I got a big chuckle when the gent pulled his Truck too close to the Trolley Tracks and sure enough, just as he got out of his truck, a Trolley comes along and almost runs his truck off the road. Very helpful indeed! Thanks again.
Has it really been 30 years? Where has the time gone? Love that movie, as I love almost all movies by Wim Wenders. And the music by Madredeus, so beautiful. Still have the CD, nice time travel for me as well.
Thank you for the opportunity to see the beauty and nature of the Alps and the process of your incredible work. At the 30th minute of your film, I felt like I was riding in the back seat of a car on a mountain road.
I will say this about the Italian Alps, it sure is bleak looking in winter. There wouldn't be many places with a bigger difference in seasons. Each season is so distinct, and changes the landscape so drastically, that it must seem sometimes like living in different places :)
See everybody, some parents do raise wonderful, respectful, hardworking, thoughtful, kind, decent, joyful children, & Martijn is one of them. Congratulations to his parents who must be so proud of him & what a fine young man he has become. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 I love Martijn’s videos & look forward to seeing them every Sunday. A big thank you for all the hard work & effort put into the making of them Martijn. Stay well & happy, warm hugs & love from Australia….. cheers Noeline Leary.🙏❤️👏👍🌈🇦🇺🎼🇦🇺🇦🇺🎼
That "cock a doodle doo" translates to a big THANK YOU. What a lucky bunch of animals. So fortunate for them to be able to live out their lives with Martijn ❤
I have a suggestion for you. First though I love and enjoy the channel every week! I’ve watched them all from the beginning. I’m a long time guitar player and live in a region with cold and more importantly dry air winters. Fireplaces really dry out homes. If the guitar with that rising dry heat above the stairs doesn’t have a humidifier it’s going to get wrecked. The wood will dry and crack. You can buy a small sound hole humidifier to insert during the winter months. Just an idea if you care about the instrument!
the best thing I can think of for this video is......poetry in motion! But that's true of every one of your videos, Martijn. the night scenes are mesmerizing. As always, the photography is first class. Thanks again!
The “dinner and a movie” segments have become one of my favorite aspects of this remarkable channel. It’s fascinating to see Martijn’s personal cinematography and sense of narrative evolve as he’s inspired by his own landscape and the gorgeous work of the masters he chooses to imbibe with his meals. Malick, Pressburger, Wenders… I look forward to his choices (and the simple yet sumptuous cooking) every week.
And who else would put a sky light on a chicken coop? LOL! I love it! Way to go Martijn! Can't wait to see what the painting will look like when its finished, looking good so far!
Exactly my reaction - finesse overload IMO, but some just have to do it 'properly' - and when you have a vision of how you want it all to be when you have finished it, that's drives you onward ! This is going to be the best little home-on-the-range ever ! Martijn's patience is amazing !
I’m wondering if his folks are going to absolutely love that painting of their son Martijn’s home away from home? And no, a photo of the place is not the same feel. Just a thought. Perhaps he wants to find a buyer for the captivating scene. You have definitely found the voice of those mountain gullies fit with tree and shrub. You can just about hear the conversation with the sky as their constant companion , the whispers of silent knowledge never tiring from expression. Reckoning the eons past and wide awake for future turns. Thank you for the icy trip by the frozen roadside waterfall. That lil cluster of aging buildings has a tale of warmth in its construction or lack there of. So glad you are steady afoot. The ice was thick on that sloping road that might have been a steep turn or dead end. Congrats on the roofing and chicken coup additions. The roof will provide a warmer and cooler environment for the chicken clan. You are thoughtful of them gladly. Couldn’t agree more. See you later on. Be well.
Those straps that hold the shingles together, I found a use for them, I recycled a bunch of plastic mesh birdseed bags, used those plastic straps for handles made big bags, I can pick up lots of yard waste with it like A giant square shopping bag, to haul leaves with or wood, anything it's practically tear resistant
Martijn, I'm intrigued by your taste in movies. If I could wish for one small thing, it'd be that you add the name of your dinner movies in the video description. This way, we could compile a "Doolaard Cinema" list. I'm sure many a film fan would appreciate this.
I scanned across the most recent episodes with mentions of movies. So far, the Doolaard Cinema Club contains the following gems: 147 - Lisbon Story 145 - Black Narcissus 143 - The Mirror 142 - A Hidden Life 141 - A Beautiful Mind 140 - The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind 136 - Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? I can't guarantee the completeness of this list, corrections welcome.
Many similarities to where I live in Southeast Alaska, weather, terrain, forest, woodcutting and skies. And watch out for those little winter road glaciers of polished ice that will send you right off the edge. ☮️
I live in Whistler, BC, Canada. We get a lot of ice or hardened snow. I use Rip’s Cleats and they are fantastic. I see where you were trying to get over that ice patch on the #147 video. The cleats would have made the crossing a breeze! Just Google the name to get to their website in Dawson Creek and see the videos. They are even required wear for the logging world. And when inside you just flip them up. I keep them on my boots for the entire winter. They would really help you maneuver around your land. Bless you, Martijn! >
And always new and different angles are being filmed successfully! Such beauty and simplicity at every level. And consistently. A viewer who’s grateful to have come across your channel.
My your Rooster is fine, heathy looking chap. The roof is looking great on the coup, the dorma window is a sweet touch. Lucky chickens to get you as their human "dad". Its 39C here the moment so I am envious of your Winter Wonderland.
Very nice. I imagine the chicken coop specs: Must meet local cultural and aesthetic standards, present a pleasing outlook at entry to the property, provide adequate weather protection for chickens, prevent access by predators and be able to withstand direct impact by meteors, space debris and/or other celestial objects. 😂
Very funny! Caught me off guard as I was reading other comments. 👍 I was also wondering about the metric equivalent of 4" x4" timbers being used as a base for shingles. I was also wondering about the weight, for a nano-second. Thank you for answering my unexpressed question!
@@avivat3010 the equivalent of 4x4” is a very metric 100mm x 100mm. I think a future newspaper article may be headlined: “Landslide disaster in Italian Alps. Timber chicken coop is sole survivor.” Martijn, you’re building a wonderful property, it will last for a very long time.
@@stephendalby836 Or: "Chicken coup stops landslide". All joking aside, I absolutely respect how Martijn follows the local style of building for the next 100s of years. Environmentally conscious and it only has to be done once and then monitored.
I love your Landrover. It reminds me of learning to drive in the British Army in the early 1970's. I still drive a Landrover today 50 years later, only now it's a fancy Discovery Sport automatic. I will always be a Landrover girl. Lucky chickens to have such a palace to live in. Stay warm! The painting is progressing beautifully. Much love from the freezing North of England.
I love it when you travel around your countryside, I love to see it and it is all so beautiful. I believe that you have found the most beautiful homestead beyond compare. You have two excellent stone buildings and a view to die for. The only critique I might have is I wish it was more level so your car wasn’t driving at such an angle around the main area. You really hit the jackpot when you found this property! It is gorgeous.
I love how Maartin. Sorry for the misspelling, shows us the hard work it takes to live off the grid. How he thinks his projects through and tries to do it in the most economical way without just throwing money at it like a lot of other TH-camrs do it’s just refreshing to see his thought process and the actual physical labor.
Hi Martijn, waht a wonderful break you are offering me in my work behind the laptop. It's soul soothing. Beautiful camera work btw, again. Excellent! Good luck!
I wonder who else finds themselves switching off the TV and spending some time painting, drawing or reading after watching these videos. I find them very motivational.
Yes. My 'Martijn Doolaard ' moments - happening as i do a project now. I'm very aware of them. 'Process' is one 'Take all the time it takes' 'Take breaks, step back' 'Finish includes picking up the workplace, putting things back where they belong' and all then seems ripe for a next project. Yup => watching is producing learning on another level. Glad I saw your comment
Cutting corners usually refers to sub standard work, but you brought a new dimension to the coop roof, and it's not even visible from your home. BRAVO again.
In an earlier episode Martijn explained that the coop was the first thing people saw when they walked up to his homestead from the road, so he wanted it to look nice.😊
geweldig, een nieuw dak op het kippenhok, maar dan moet het ook wel mooi zijn, dus met dakkapel. Heerlijk dat creatieve brein van jou en je handen weten het ook altijd te maken. Love It.
The shot of you driving down the road is so visually brilliant. The music, the bouncing of the landrover, the reflections of the trees on the sunlit, dusty windscreen, the bouncing of your image in the rear view mirror…very evocative. Thank you
Beautiful episode of another week of Martijn's work and magic. I'm wondering if Martijn will build another wood storage unit and add another farmer supply? There is such a good feeling to see that wood storage unit full. Kind greetings to all the Community family here. God bless.
He is a Superman, he knows every thing. Lo sigo desde que empezó, una maravilla de hombre que sabe hacer de todo siendo muy minucioso en sus trabajos. Es una gran diversión mirar sus videos, hasta la música que pone es excelente. Felicitaciones Martijn !!
Martijn, I appreciate the time and work you put into creating these compelling videos every week. You make it all look easy but I know in minus degree weather you must have a very complicated system of keeping your camera(s) working and creating beauty at the same time. I love the little gable on the chicken coop and wonder if you will paint that white window frame, as well? It feels like this winter has been easier than years past but, I know it is not over. Stay warm and have a wonderful week! Grazie!, as always!

Once again I learned something new. Thank you!
Tricks of the Trade! Great advice from one who is a city girl. 👍🏻✋
Herzallerliebst wie die Hühner Martijn begrüßen. Dem schließ ich mich an und begrüße dich an diesem Sonntag herzlich. 💫❤👍

You know what Martijn, one of the thing I love when you create, work...is that everything is well thought out and you know how you're gonna do it 👍👌😃😃
He is a quick learner, takes in so many facts, details then does it right.

The news seems to drag us all along. You sharing these weekly updates inspire, stimulate, and encourage each of us.
"Living quietly" your words remind me of Pico Iyer writing about solitude and being silent opening us to art and beauty.
One can say about Martijn that he is a hard-working guy. He does so many things himself, not everyone can do this.
💯
That's the problem with humanity. Ppl just don't bother to explore or experiment with their godgiven abilities. That's perhaps why most of us keep coming back to visit Martijn. Love that man ❤ 🙏
Man, apart from your interesting projects, these videos are really small works of art ! Beautiful filming, tasteful music, timeless atmosphere…
I have the same kind of headlamp. It has a usb port to reload it.
@qwxknn
Thank you, for the information about the name of the film Martijn was viewing, "Lisbon Story".
FIVE STARS. Best chicken coop in the world. Would stay there again.
😅😊
Martijn is a jack of all trades! Extreme bike travel, construction, art and so on … It’s epic!
The contrast in colour @16:35 between where the sun hits and the shade is incredible.
I love Martijn’s videos & look forward to seeing them every Sunday.
Please press the like button to support Martijns work on the videos he puts out for us..thank you all.😉
the best thing I can think of for this video is......poetry in motion!
Malick, Pressburger, Wenders…
I look forward to his choices (and the simple yet sumptuous cooking) every week.
The movie name is ,,Lisbon story,,
I scanned across the most recent episodes with mentions of movies.
So far, the Doolaard Cinema Club contains the following gems:
147 - Lisbon Story
145 - Black Narcissus
143 - The Mirror
142 - A Hidden Life
141 - A Beautiful Mind
140 - The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind
136 - Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
I can't guarantee the completeness of this list, corrections welcome.

Ai Martijn. You obviously love your feather children very much. Thank you for sharing another lovely video.
I felt like I was in the back of that jeep going for a spin with Martijn ❤️
Judge a man not by what he does for himself but by what he does for his chickens 🐓
Good morning Martijn. The chicken coop roof really looks good. Your planning and attention to detail pays off. See you next week.Stay safe and warm.
Wonderful to see Ben Fogle chatting with Fr Johnannes and you Martijn ! Great film…
My your Rooster is fine, heathy looking chap. The roof is looking great on the coup, the dorma window is a sweet touch. Lucky chickens to get you as their human "dad". Its 39C here the moment so I am envious of your Winter Wonderland.
Very nice. I imagine the chicken coop specs:
Must meet local cultural and aesthetic standards, present a pleasing outlook at entry to the property, provide adequate weather protection for chickens, prevent access by predators and be able to withstand direct impact by meteors, space debris and/or other celestial objects.
😂
The total chicken coop options because they are loving their lives and talking about as they go along.
I think a future newspaper article may be headlined:
“Landslide disaster in Italian Alps.
Timber chicken coop is sole survivor.”
Martijn, you’re building a wonderful property, it will last for a very long time.
@@stephendalby836 Or: "Chicken coup stops landslide". All joking aside, I absolutely respect how Martijn follows the local style of building for the next 100s of years. Environmentally conscious and it only has to be done once and then monitored.
Watching your videos is like deep breathing. Thank you, l feel reset for the coming week. Stay warm and safe. ❤
I am amazed at Martins ability to transform simple spaces and make them beautiful. Thank you Martin for sharing your talents with us.
You always go to the best places for lunch. Thanks for taking us along Martijn. It’s really cold and icy in northern Ohio too. Stay off the ice.
Love that feature on roof always interesting viewing martijn never miss the weekly video take care 🏴🏴
The coup is looking so beautiful! Thank you for another lovely Sunday morning.
very nostalgic to see the AA badge on the land rover.
Martijn, the timelapse of the moon setting behind the mountain was so cool. Beautiful. 💖
Love the shingled chicken palace! They will reward you with more eggs! What an incredible man you are.🐓
I love the contrasts in scenery and weather. The ongoing commitment to achieve your goals. Thank you😅
Beautiful painting
I really love your old Land Rover.
That thing is cooler than a Popsicle in July.
Lol
Hi Martijn, waht a wonderful break you are offering me in my work behind the laptop. It's soul soothing. Beautiful camera work btw, again. Excellent! Good luck!

That camera angle from the back of the LR is one of the best yet for picture framing the beautiful scenery you have.
The most luxurious and eye-pleasing chicken coop ever. The little window is such a great touch.
I wonder who else finds themselves switching off the TV and spending some time painting, drawing or reading after watching these videos. I find them very motivational.
I don't watch tv.

Yes. My 'Martijn Doolaard ' moments - happening as i do a project now. I'm very aware of them.
'Process' is one
'Take all the time it takes'
'Take breaks, step back'
'Finish includes picking up the workplace, putting things back where they belong' and all then seems ripe for a next project.
Yup => watching is producing learning on another level.
Glad I saw your comment
I haven't had a TV for many years
Cutting corners usually refers to sub standard work, but you brought a new dimension to the coop roof, and it's not even visible from your home. BRAVO again.
Cutting corners means you are broke trying to repair something.
In an earlier episode Martijn explained that the coop was the first thing people saw when they walked up to his homestead from the road, so he wanted it to look nice.😊
Excellent episode!
Always simple and inspiring.
The early morning view of the sky and mountains is stunning.
geweldig, een nieuw dak op het kippenhok, maar dan moet het ook wel mooi zijn, dus met dakkapel.
Thank you
