Like Corvettes and Porsches with Track Packs going to cars and coffee overlanding gear is to mostly look cool and you don't need most of this stuff to go to state parks.
I don’t think it’s a fad it’s here to stay. The van craze started in the 60s and 70s it has now turned towards off Roading. My wife and I started camping with a tent, then went to A Camper in the bed of the truck then a cab over Camper, a mini motorhome 19’ finally a 32’ toy hauler fifth wheel and now we’re working our way back down. The van allows you to get out there and do stuff and still have the comforts of home. The option of all the sick add-ons is great. Thanks 4 the video John
My goal with these lifted van meets is to celebrate vans in this style. Instead of low rider vans with flames and murals I want my meets to be all about the adventure vans. I think vans are a near perfect overland platform becuase they are big enough to be comfortable in and small enough to do some off roading. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your van!
@JohnDrivesAnything we have a lot of camper vans here. Not really any off roading but camping in campgrounds is popular. I seen a few VW vans and Mercedes sprinters with the sick add on traction boards
I need a rtz lift, karger tires a d 4:10 gears. I was driving in the desert parrallel to the transmisson towers and scraped the bottom of my van. Just glad I did'nt bend drive shaft
In Florida I think the most popular sick addon is silly lighting around the spare tire or showing the undercarriage or whatever. But those aren't really overlanders, just people with trucks/SUVs. Lots of lift kits but I think they're just for looks around here. And for crashing through water puddles.
In California people go to 4 Wheel Parts and buy every single add on they can hang off their vehicle and never go off roading. My theory is these rigs with all these add ons are $100K + brand new and they have to work 6 days a week 12 hours a day to afford their rigs so they don't have time to go off roading.
like a wagon or S.U.V. fold down the seat add a mattress sleep bag and im ready or a smaller pu or ute prefer a 6' box add a camp shell topper mat /sleepbag and ones ready
Your comment about rooftop tents just made my adventure buddy and myself crack up as she slept in my rooftop tent for the last year she says you’re more more liable to slip off the ladder that you are forget you were in a rooftop tent.
Sweet video man. For the most part I agree with you on most of your list except one thing. And that's the 12-volt refrigerator. I have one and I used it in my truck when I went camping up north here in Michigan and it was a game changer for me. It's allowed me to take things like steak and other things that require refrigeration and remain off the grid and out in the woods for much longer. Now I can take Dry Goods I can take canned goods and all that and I don't require a refrigerator that is true but if I'm going to go to the trouble of driving all the way out there and do this I do want some luxuries.
People at the meet brought straight up kitchens with them. I was going to eat an MRE I actually love MREs but my buddy brought steak tacos and fed a bunch of people. Next meet I will nake sure to film everyone's rigs in depth. Last time I was just in the moment but my goal with this channel is to show people how cool this is. I personally just enjoy the journey and hanging out in my van.
@JohnDrivesAnything oh I hear you I totally understand about the journey and just getting the hell out there. But MREs!?!?!! I ate so many of those stupid things when I was a soldier back in the 90s that the very thought of them turn my stomach nope I got to have real food now. I don't take like a full-blown kitchen with me out but I do take a decent amount of stuff because part of life is good food!
@@charlesartificer2158 That Movie Tremors man! I wanted to know what a MRE was and I ended up liking them The Deserts are awful though! Coudnt finish the Cinnamon bun.
@JohnDrivesAnything well you would have loved the Army because they handed those things out all the time. Hot Chow was so desired and when we got it oh my God, talk about licking your plate. After a while those MREs all started tasting like wet cardboard. Back in the 90s and some of the MREs that used to have this cookie bar that was pretty dang good. But what we used to do this is how desperate we were mind you, we would take the cocoa powder packet put that in a canteen cup along with the creamer packet and the coffee packet and a sugar packet. Add just a very small amount of water Stir It Up and you get what we used to call Ranger pudding. It would give you a nice little sugar rush and a caffeine buzz and it was kind of chocolatey. There were guys in my unit that could take an MRE and actually make it somewhat edible was kind of scary the stuff we came up with.
I would suggest the following.(for my self built -locked -lifted 250 Transit 2WD with 85k miles of RV use (1 to 3 months per trip) - the only thing that reads "rv" is a Max Air roof Fan & it is white on white - so VERY minimalistic) Weekend warriors Car Camping ranking will differ. -Power/battery in S (without a doubt) -My Luna Fridge/Freezer in A -I have not to date found much use for an awning so move it to F -MaxAir fan - not on your list but I would put in A. For the last 3 weeks mine has not been working & I miss it a bunch. yes "A" (I like bacon - but don't wanna smell it for the next 5 days) - Bucket is important but not an S👍
What roof does yours have? I'm contemplating getting a high roof and that's why I haven't done a max fan. I'm going to do a video on overlanding vans and what I like. Technically most things are a luxury but at the end of the day we take what we need to actually want to go out. I enjoy my van more because it's lifted and looks cool. Don't need a lift 95% of the time but as a car guy having a cool looking van is more fun.
@@JohnDrivesAnything One person's luxury is another person's need to have. Some people tent camp others don't want to sleep on the ground any more. People don't mind stooping in their van - I bought a mid height Transit cuz I wanted to stand while I cook - not sit or stoop!!! of course YMMV. I'm older so I don't need bling on the outside of my van for me to enjoy it more. It's all about what's on the inside that counts🤡 Ha

John technically Overlanding originated with the original 25th infantry buffalo soldiers who were a black Calvary on bicycles, so it can be any form of vehicle. It does not have to be a car or motorized.

Over 1.3 millions of people die every year from van roof tents ⛺️.
Falling from a van roof is a long way down! You'll survive if you fall off the roof of a Subaru
It all depends on where you’re going and how long you’re staying there.
For sure. I will do more videos on this topic. People seem to be enjoying it.
