Kirby's Dreamland 2 was just a scout. Kirby's Dreamland 3 was an invasion. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards was about finally settling the score once and for all.

As a kid, I never had the guts to beat 02, because I was so unbelievably terrified of it. The monstrous angelic design, the bleeding eyeball, and this melancholic music made it the most horrifying creature I’ve ever saw in a video game... Then I fought it and saw it had a big band-aid on top of it’s forehead lmao

It's such a simple thing, but I just love that, not only does Ribbon join Kirby in this fight, she's _essential_ to it. Up until that point, Ribbon doesn't really show up that often, mostly in cutscenes and whenever you collect a Crystal Shard. But when Kirby is launched into the arena with Zero Two, he begins tumbling into the abyss. Immediately, Ribbon grabs hold of him and saves him before he can. In that simple, single act, she becomes the most important element of the boss fight. Ribbon is the one that maneuvers Kirby out of the way of Zero Two's attacks. She allows him to attack its weak points. Her crystal becomes the weapon Kirby uses to destroy Zero Two. Any time they get hit, she always catches him before he can fall again. I love the emphasis they put on Ribbon in this fight, because it doesn't feel that often that a companion is so physically instrumental to Kirby's success.
gooey could fight zero in the immediately preceding game, star allies needed you to shoehorn 4 fellows to form the star sparkler but you could go the entire fight just relying on kirby, taranza gave him the hypernova fruit that one time, but for the most part, they just stay behind away from the fight (also it's kinda neat that kirby's most plausible love interest also happens to be more relevant to a final boss fight than most of the other companions)
It's funny, starting in Dream Land 2, they began establishing that Friendship is one of Kirby's greatest powers. Anywhere he goes, no matter who he has to stop, his friends are with him to help, whether it be this fight, Dedede and Taranza giving you the Hypernova fruit in Triple Deluxe, Meta Knight bringing in the Halberd in Planet Robobot, literally the entire premise of Star Allies and Amazing Mirror, a pretty big part of the plot in Forgotten Land, and some special mentions from Dream Land 3, he always has his friends, and more recent games have made them frequently vital to Kirby's victories as aforementioned. And go figure, almost every villain (Void Termina and Magalor _especially_ included) usually either has had no friends to begin with, or ditched them at some point in the past...

Isn't that interesting? So this one time my friends were having a discussion about Zero Two and in my mind I was like "how do they know 0²?" Then I realize that there IS another Zero Two... Not MY 0²! And was devastated. (Well not really, but it sounds more dramatic that way.)
Kirby 64 did some interesting things that the other kirby games doesn't. First: the fact that you cant run away from the true final boss, it only says "tough it out". Its trying to say that it's the final battle, and zero2 won't let you escape until somrone will die, even if it's him. Second: the fact that you must use all the basic copy abilities against mirage matter. Unlike the kirby game where you can just use hammer and kill everyone easily, mirage matter can only be damaged at some parts with certain abilities, making the boss much more extreme, and less like a normal boss. Third is the ability mixing. I know that star allies also have mixes, but in 64 you can mix every ability with each other, and make new and interesting mixup abilities, such as bring a literal firework or throwing food at others by being a fridge, you wont see something like that in allies. I really hope they will make a remake of this game, this is truly an amazing game. It will also answer some questions regarding the lore. Such as if the waddle dee is bandana waddle dee or even adeleine's full story and if she is really from shiver star or not.
Star Allies explains the background of Zero-Two with Void indirectly, Zero-Two is just another Kirby created with negative emotions that couldn't be happy. After all these years I can finally understand why Hal chose this kind of sad music for the final battle: You are giving eternal rest on someone of your own kind.
How I'm feel sympathy toward a flying angelic abomination that want to corrupt the world Do not be fooled, Zero Two indeed suffering but it also want to make everyone suffer in endless darkness forever by turning Ripple Star (and possibly other Star previously) into Dark Star Zero Two come to Ripple Star to destroy the Crystal that emit light which the *only* thing that can harm it, not even Kirby. It may be for game experience but I think the reason the fight like that because Kirby himself can't do anything toward Zero Two and Ripple Star Crystal the one and only weapon against it
Zero-Two also wants it, there's no other reason to lock Kirby into a deathmatch with him otherwise. You don't lock someone into a fight if you're confident you'll win, it's so they have no choice but to finish the job and to remove your choice to do otherwise.

I can actually see this being a pause screen description for zero, I like how it keeps that semi playful tone the pause screen descriptions usually have while still being dark and sad.
That's what makes this my favorite song of all time out of anything ever. There are so many amazing remixes of it, with so many different approaches to it, so many different instruments used, so many different styles, and yet, the original still holds its own. It's just incredible. This is sheer art in its rawest form.

First layer, the fact that Miracle Matter wasn’t the final boss. Second layer, the setting, the music, the visuals. The game telling you to “though it out”. Third layer, 02 itself. The way it looks. The way it moves. How it attacks. How it reacts to being attacked. The clear way it shows it suffers when hurt. The blood it bleeds when shot. The fact that it’s either already died once, or is simply a replacement, a stand-in for something else. Fourth layer, the interpretation. Some see it as 0 having been revived. Others, as 0’s shell having been “animated”, given “life”. Maybe even Gooey from KDL3 being forced into fulfilling a role he was never meant to fulfill. It’s pure evil, that much is certain. But, is the pain it feels just a reaction to danger akin to an animal’s, or is there more to it? If it’s merely a reflex, then does that mean it’s not conscious of it’s actions? Of it’s feelings? Of it’s own existence? If it is in someway aware of itself, does it understand the world around it? Does it avoid such questioning it? Can it even question such things? And if it can comprehend it to an extent, what are it’s thoughts? Does it knowingly hate the planets and people it kills? Does it not? Does it dread it’s destiny, the path of an evil god? Does it envy Kirby? Does it know it shares an origin with him? To me, 02 feels pain. Physical pain, mental pain, and emotional pain. Physical pain caused by it’s wounds. Mental pain caused by it’s conscious existence. And emotional pain caused by it’s purpose: to bring suffering, and to suffer itself. It’s a being with a single minded pursuit. A being who feels nought but pain. A mind trapped by it’s own sentience. Which is why, when faced with the image of one of it’s kind opposing it in all ways possible, it can’t help but long for something else. For something better. It can’t help but cry out for help, knowing very well the futility of it’s words. (ah, I went overboard. Probably look like an overdramatic edgy teen. Had fun writing this tho, and the feelings I felt while listening to this amazing theme where definitely real) To whoever’s reading this: Thank you, and never negate the feelings videogames, movies, books or any other kind of artform invoke in you. Kirby consumes other creatures to make himself more like them. Zero enters other creatures to make them more like Zero. I don't know if that was an intentional parallel, but it sure is a funny coincidence the final boss fight of this game features two round creatures with wings shooting blue projectiles at each other.
The fact that I've seen more people bitching about seeing more anime 02 than Kirby 02 than I have _actually_ seen anime 02 goes to show just how quickly DitF shrivelled up and died.

All Kirby fans claim that the bleeding eyeball 02 is the real 02... And they ain't wrong. He came first, so he's the original 02 (Kirby 64 was released in 2000, and DitF came around in 2018).

I interpret Zero Two as just some evil creature. The music is sad, yes, but it's also very dramatic, very intense, which suits the situation well, because this is the final boss, the source of all Dark Matter, which is basically like, 90% if not more of all the evil in the Kirby universe. The reason it's sad is not necessarily because Zero Two is sad, or wants to be put out of its misery- It's because the very nature of Zero Two itself is sad. It destroys, and conquers, and corrupts, because that's all its ever known. That's all it ever was, is, and will ever be. It's not just evil, it's an embodiment of darkness, cursed to exist for eternity (until you killed it, lol, but who's to say it won't come back from the dead again?) without ever being able to know happiness, warmth, or love. It does not long for these emotions, for it does not know what they are- It probably can't even begin to comprehend them. It's empty inside, cursed with a miserable existence it probably isn't even aware of, and it doesn't WANT to be put out of its misery; It NEEDS to be put out of its misery. For the sake of the universe, and for the sake of itself, but it won't go down without a fight. However, this is just my interpretation of it. I guess we'll never know, since we actually know more about Zero and Zero Two than we do about Shinichi Shimomura, the person who created them. No pictures, no heresay, no anything. All we know is that he was the developer of the Dark Matter Trilogy, and that he worked on Nightmare In Dreamland, before his name vanished from all Kirby products and hasn't resurfaced since, even to this day, so he's either extremely dedicated to remaining as anonymous as possible, or he's dead. I guess someone could ask Jun Ishikawa, who's the person who actually made the music for the fight, but not only may he not remember, but it's pretty likely that Shimomura himself told Ishikawa to give the track a sad tone. Maybe he asked them why, and they gave him a good explanation, but even if they did, and even if he still remembers said explanation, it's incredibly unlikely that anyone is ever going to get the chance to ask Ishikawa about Zero Two. In short, we can only theorize, but maybe that makes this amazing final boss battle even more special than it already was. I mean, people are still thinking about it almost twenty years later- That's pretty amazing, honestly

I'm glad so many other people have been captivated by this incredibly interesting video game character in the same way I have. Even still, I think my theory is closer to Shimomura's intentions than anyone else's theory. It just.. Seems more fitting. Also, I'm not sure if you're aware, but you chose to reply to my comment on the 20th Anniversary of Kirby 64, and by extension, the 20th Anniversary of Zero Two as a character.

That would be like saying I'm part my own brother, because we were both born from the same person, and even then, that would be being kind of generous. Dark Mind, Zero, and maybe even Drawcia, were all created from Astral Birth Voids, which is the final phase that Void Termina enters before becoming a Zero/Dark Mind/Drawcia, and that phase of Void Termina can only come to be by filling it with negative emotions. If Void Termina is filled with positive emotions instead, a creature like Kirby (also Meta Knight, too, likely) is born. So, basically, both Zero and Kirby are both different forms that Void Termina can take, so maybe it would be more accurate to say that both Zero and Kirby are both part Void Termina, since both Zero and Kirby come from Void Termina. Zero just comes from a Void Termina in a negative state, which causes it to turn into Astral Birth Void, while Kirby comes from a positive version that we probably didn't end up encountering in Star Allies. Also yeah, Zero is my personal favorite villain, and is also definitely the character closest to being a main antagonist that we've had throughout the entire series, although I wouldn't exactly consider it to be the actual main antagonist- Just the closest we've had. The Dark Matter species as a whole, however? THAT, I would consider to be the actual main antagonist, considering they make up 50%, if not more, of all the conflict that happens in the games. Dark Matter Swordsman is responsible for stealing the rainbows in Kirby's Dreamland 2; Zero is responsible for breaking Popstar's rings and corrupting areas and bosses; Zero Two is responsible for the desecration of Ripple Star (It was likely that Miracle Matter was the one who led the actual invasion, with Zero Two commanding it to launch said invasion); Dark Mind is responsible for completely and singlehandedly fucking up the entire Mirror World, creating Dark Meta Knight (Who in turn went on to corrupt Queen Sectonia), and then trying to conquer said world; Drawcia turned the entire world into paint; Dark Nebula uh.. Well, it existed, and caused problems, I guess; The Master Crown possibly influenced Magolor to deceive Kirby, and later possessed Magolor himself in an attempt to take over the entire universe; Dark Crafter.. Uh, what did he do again?; Dark Matter may have had some sort of influence on Star Dream; And Dark Matter's origin was what Hyness and the three mage sisters were trying to summon in Star Allies. So yeah, Dark Matter is pretty much the main antagonist of the entire series. The only main antagonists who weren't related to Dark Matter in any way were Marx, Yin Yarn, and Necrodeus. Also, why the hell would people get disgusted with you for wanting to talk about Zero Two? They're a cool character, lol. That makes no sense to me whatsoever.
Something that still baffles me to this day, is the fact that in Ocarina of Time, Nintendo considered that Ganon spitting blood was too "violent" and required a censorship. But then, they tought that THIS FUCKING BOSS FIGHT was apropiate for a goddamn Kirby game, and didn't need a censorship of any kind
one amazing tiny piece of this song is at 1:17 where you can faintly hear the cheerful pan flute from early on in the game i just love that it's like, despite the power of Dark Matter, Kirby is still pulling through and the pause screen only letting you resume, because both options are now the same, is another smaller detail that makes it perfect
I didn't know it was possible to enjoy, appreciate, or respect this song even more than I already did. Something really small like reusing an instrument used in a song early in the game goes a long way
And 1:27-1:50 represents Kirby’s final push to defeat 02. The reason I think it’s so melancholy is because maybe Kirby doesn’t really want to destroy 02 because it was born from nothing but negativity. The poor thing doesn’t know any better. But it’s too great a threat to try to reason with
02 is probably the most terrifying being in all of Nintendo. Not because of its power even though it is massive, not because of its design even though it’s creepy, but because of what it represents in Kirby. Kirby represents light, good, happiness, friendship and freedom. 02 is the anti Kirby. He represents darkness, evil, anger, sadness and lack of freedom and that’s its goal, to eradicate the concept of free will from those who live among the stars. Think about it, 02 creates the dark matter and what is their main ability? Their main ability is control, they take over people and use their bodies for their own gain. If the dark matter can control someone as powerful as the king of dream land with ease, just imagine what 02 can do. 02 is the most threatening presence in Nintendo because of its presence. It doesn’t even have to show its face and you would know how scary the thing is just because of the monsters it creates. So the next time you play this game, be thankful that Kirby is so powerful because if he wasn’t, the all consuming mass of dark matter would take over everything
I feel like 02 is more like a representation of the lack of emotions, it just does what It came to do, feeling nothing but emptyness, without caring the pain that all of that might cause. But yeah, 02 is a really terrifyng character would be cool to see it back
Zero was a creature born from Void, the embodiment of creation, just like Kirby however.... unlike Kirby, Zero never knew happiness, only pain and sorrow, it could never be happy, it didn't even understand the concept of happiness because it could never feel it itself.. so it did what it knew.... it corrupted... and corrupted... and corrupted. . . I see this as a true final boss, Pain and fear, against Joy and happiness This really is the final battle, And only one will make it out alive...
A reminder that Sakurai recently revealed that Marx's final design was a toned down version of his original design. HAL Laboratories was going all out on their final bosses when Kirby was picking up steam.
that's not how graphics work. They get better over time because Nintendo gains better knowledge to develop games for the system. Otherwise I agree, if they make a remaster for this game, they BETTER add realistic blood. Not like little timmy is gonna find all of those Crystal Shards anyway lol
One may notice that, in dream land 3, zero harmed himself in nearly all of his attacks, cutting himself, bashing into Kirby, and even, of course, ripping his eye out of it’s socket. However, in doing all this, he doesn’t even flinch. In this game, he only attacks by shooting tears and some sort of gas from his tail. As well as this, you can see that he hurts when hit. Zero has gained a new feeling since the last fight, and it’s pain.

Vs Astral Birth Zero Two Wh-what is this thing? What does it want? Where does it cone from? All these questions... all these mysteries... they cannot be answered except for one. It wants you, and all lifeforms succumb to his rule... or end up D E A D . This "abomination" has steeled up for this memorable occasion. Unless stopped, this thing will rule a galaxy of corpses with an iron wing, with eternal darkness shrouding the very starry sky as a reminder of the chaos that has been started in the past...
This song is beautiful in how it perfectly communicates the feeling of the battle. Noone wanted it to come to this, but it was inevitable. Kirby and 02 are oblidged to engage in this battle of attrition. It isn't dazzling, it isn't flashy. It's 2 sides grinding eachother down until only one is left standing. It especially feels like a slugfest when you know to take out the wings and reduce the fight to pummeling him while he defenselessly cries at you with no chance of damaging you
You know, the real kicker is that both 02's share the same color patterns. So much so that for the longest time I thought the DinF 02 was a gijinka of this one.
The scariest villains are those who act with a machine-like purpose and 02 is a perfect example of that. This thing was born from negative emotions and seeks to eradicate any form of positivity in the universe, whether it be through control or by simply destroying it. It knows nothing else and *can't* know anything else! It could try and feel something other than hatred, but it would be for naught. 02 isn't a machine but how it acts is definitely machine-like: singular, unyielding, unending. And it reflects this in the boss fight itself. 02 confronts Kirby, who is in essence the opposite of what it represents in every aspect, and gives him an ultimatum: Kill me or be killed (no option to quit on the pause menu). 02 knows it will not stop until all positivity is gone, so it wants Kirby to finally put it out of its misery or die trying. It's both incredibly sad and disturbing for a game about a round pink ball of joy.
granted, Darling in the Franxx would've been a completely different anime if the Zero 2 (the Chick) was replaced by Zero 2 from Kirby. And if you're thinking either just for the climax where Zero 2 (Kirby) and his Dark Matter force are in that giant ass space-war, or throughout the entire show where there's an awkwardly hilarious romance between Hiro and a Giant Demonic Space-Eye.... . . . . . . . the answer is yes

I see 02 as a tragic villain, incapable of understanding mortal existence. I sees us free-willed beings as suffering, dying, hateful. But under its command, we can find peace under its reign. But we don't want that, mortals want to have the freedom to make their own choices, even if it's the wrong choice. I feel this song reflects 02's pain to us as if its crying to Kirby and Ribbon "Why? Why must you reject my gift? I want to free you from pain. I am trying to give you a good ending, yet you refuse...why?' from 02's perspective its a somber last stand against creatures that reject what it sees as a paradise, like humans rejecting heaven. It cannot grasp mortal decision of "Free Will" so it cannot understand why Kirby and the universe fight so hard against it. Meanwhile from Ribbon and by extension Kirby's perspective, is a dismal last stand against a being that will stop at nothing to control them. They don't know of its nature, Ribbon might, we don't know. But to them 02 is a power-hungry, megalomaniac of a god that will stop at nothing to control all of creation. The song from their perspective is one of sorrow and fear, they're fighting something they cannot understand, and the fear that any moment, if they fall, all of creation will too. The whole Dark Matter trilogy is about a misunderstood god that cannot be understood nor can understand those to rile against its message of supposed freedom. And it ends in the god's death...until it finds a new way of saving mortals from their suffering, to reincarnate itself in the image of their savior...Kirby. It rebirths itself into the form of the puffball, but cannot grasp what it's name should be...it's all Null and Void. But that doesn't matter, names don't matter if there is no creation to learn it. But now, it is Void, instead of control to free them, it shall exterminate all life to free them. A terminal...a *Void Termina*

ok so it took me years but I finally beat the boss rush mode a few years back, and can I just say, the moment of the INTENSITY of this song playing in the background as you're facing the final boss with prob 1 hp or even full hp if you're doing the no hit challenge You feel every single ounce of the song pouring in as you're sat with one final challenge, one final boss, one final fight before its all over. it gives you that feeling all over again from fighting it the first time but even more intense and I love it.
Really gives off this vibe of your entire hometown burning down. All the memories, comfort, warmness, and possibly loved ones.... All burning down to the ground right before your eyes. Yet you can't do anything but.... watch... and run away....
The somber tone of this song and the face you get at the beginning of the fight makes me believe that 0² is Gooey. And he's forced to fight you because he's part of Dark Matter.
ArcticKaiju Zero Two is actually the rebirth of Zero himself, but it’s more that his corpse was given life because the original Zero died. Also Gooey is in Star Allies, so...yeah

Several years ago I bought this game on the Nintendo Wii Shop. I always got the bad ending because I never figured out how to obtain the remaining shards so in the end I stopped playing. I figured out how to obtain them only today. So I turned on my Wii and played this game from the beginning. And I reached 02 only few moments ago. When I defeated him, I felt like I finally accomplished what I couldn't do when I was a kid. And it feels great.
I always liked that Zero Two is so powerful that he prevents outversal beings from time dilating out of the fight (aka peventing players from quitting the level) almost like he's trapping you in such a way that he Wants you to take him down and he knows you can do it. It makes the fight way sadder.
This battle right here. It's so intense and epic, the adrenaline rush from you and the boss being at your last bit of health cannot be understated. I'd even go as far to say that is this the absolute peak of Final Boss fights.
In atmosphere only. The fight itself is easy as hell, especially since you can clip 02's wings. Even still, great fight. Wouldn't say best fight, but definitely up there.
@@captainblue5096 everyone says 02 is "easy" but he's more of a puzzle. I could not for the life of me figure out how to beat this guy, and he trounced me. Then I accidentally hit his wing a few times and I saw he was missing one. Then I learned how to lead my shots while avoiding him. And eventually beat him. If you go in blind, he's actually a really good challenge.
Until Void Termina in Star Allies, this was the most ultimate and high-stakes a final battle had been for Kirby, and looking retroactively at the lore tells you so much. There’s nothing that ticks me off more than people calling Dark Matter the ultimate and overarching villain of Kirby when Zero’s been here all along. There’s a reason the Hyper Zone is the background of Void’s splash screen, there’s a reason the arena for Void resembles Dark Star. Zero is the evil reincarnation of Void and true foil to Kirby.

The way this song almost feels like it’s crying for zero two is honest to god so amazing. Kirby final bosses have always been crazy, all for their own reasons, but in my opinion, no other Kirby final boss has ever felt quite like this one.
Here’s a tip I found out on like my eighth playthrough. Instead of shooting through 02‘s halo the first couple times, shoot its wings until they're destroyed. This will keep 02 from targeting you and basically lets you skip the phase where you shoot its eye for the rest of the fight.

This music was absolutely perfect for demonstrating the true scale of the enemy you were facing and really encapsulated that feeling of hopelessness knowing it was just you and this was it, this was the end.
Still the greatest final boss theme in video game history. To elaborate further over a year later, this doesn't sound like anything else before and after it in terms of the franchise's history. There hasn't been a Kirby game where the music genuinely sounds this depressing, somber and ultimately, final in sheer scope. Like something you'd hear from the final boss of a Square Enix-esque JRPG. It almost feels out of place even in an retroactively E10+-rated game.
Something I notice is that, this is actually the only instance (maybe not) where the ost takes a turn for the darker. The regular boss theme is a fun one and the other boss themes sound more like you play with them. Shiver star might come close, but this. This is in your face, which shows that you found the incarnet of negativity. There is no facade, you have a final face of against the true enemy. No happyness to roll yourself into

It's such a simple thing, but I just love that, not only does Ribbon join Kirby in this fight, she's _essential_ to it.
Up until that point, Ribbon doesn't really show up that often, mostly in cutscenes and whenever you collect a Crystal Shard. But when Kirby is launched into the arena with Zero Two, he begins tumbling into the abyss. Immediately, Ribbon grabs hold of him and saves him before he can.
In that simple, single act, she becomes the most important element of the boss fight. Ribbon is the one that maneuvers Kirby out of the way of Zero Two's attacks. She allows him to attack its weak points. Her crystal becomes the weapon Kirby uses to destroy Zero Two. Any time they get hit, she always catches him before he can fall again.
I love the emphasis they put on Ribbon in this fight, because it doesn't feel that often that a companion is so physically instrumental to Kirby's success.
gooey could fight zero in the immediately preceding game, star allies needed you to shoehorn 4 fellows to form the star sparkler but you could go the entire fight just relying on kirby, taranza gave him the hypernova fruit that one time, but for the most part, they just stay behind away from the fight
(also it's kinda neat that kirby's most plausible love interest also happens to be more relevant to a final boss fight than most of the other companions)
It's funny, starting in Dream Land 2, they began establishing that Friendship is one of Kirby's greatest powers.
Anywhere he goes, no matter who he has to stop, his friends are with him to help, whether it be this fight, Dedede and Taranza giving you the Hypernova fruit in Triple Deluxe, Meta Knight bringing in the Halberd in Planet Robobot, literally the entire premise of Star Allies and Amazing Mirror, a pretty big part of the plot in Forgotten Land, and some special mentions from Dream Land 3, he always has his friends, and more recent games have made them frequently vital to Kirby's victories as aforementioned.
And go figure, almost every villain (Void Termina and Magalor _especially_ included) usually either has had no friends to begin with, or ditched them at some point in the past...

Kirby 64 did some interesting things that the other kirby games doesn't.
First: the fact that you cant run away from the true final boss, it only says "tough it out".
Its trying to say that it's the final battle, and zero2 won't let you escape until somrone will die, even if it's him.
Second: the fact that you must use all the basic copy abilities against mirage matter.
Unlike the kirby game where you can just use hammer and kill everyone easily, mirage matter can only be damaged at some parts with certain abilities, making the boss much more extreme, and less like a normal boss.
Third is the ability mixing.
I know that star allies also have mixes, but in 64 you can mix every ability with each other, and make new and interesting mixup abilities, such as bring a literal firework or throwing food at others by being a fridge, you wont see something like that in allies.
I really hope they will make a remake of this game, this is truly an amazing game. It will also answer some questions regarding the lore. Such as if the waddle dee is bandana waddle dee or even adeleine's full story and if she is really from shiver star or not.

First layer, the fact that Miracle Matter wasn’t the final boss.
Second layer, the setting, the music, the visuals. The game telling you to “though it out”.
Third layer, 02 itself. The way it looks. The way it moves. How it attacks. How it reacts to being attacked. The clear way it shows it suffers when hurt. The blood it bleeds when shot. The fact that it’s either already died once, or is simply a replacement, a stand-in for something else.
Fourth layer, the interpretation. Some see it as 0 having been revived. Others, as 0’s shell having been “animated”, given “life”. Maybe even Gooey from KDL3 being forced into fulfilling a role he was never meant to fulfill.
It’s pure evil, that much is certain. But, is the pain it feels just a reaction to danger akin to an animal’s, or is there more to it?
If it’s merely a reflex, then does that mean it’s not conscious of it’s actions? Of it’s feelings? Of it’s own existence?
If it is in someway aware of itself, does it understand the world around it? Does it avoid such questioning it? Can it even question such things? And if it can comprehend it to an extent, what are it’s thoughts?
Does it knowingly hate the planets and people it kills? Does it not? Does it dread it’s destiny, the path of an evil god? Does it envy Kirby? Does it know it shares an origin with him?
To me, 02 feels pain. Physical pain, mental pain, and emotional pain. Physical pain caused by it’s wounds. Mental pain caused by it’s conscious existence. And emotional pain caused by it’s purpose: to bring suffering, and to suffer itself.
It’s a being with a single minded pursuit. A being who feels nought but pain. A mind trapped by it’s own sentience. Which is why, when faced with the image of one of it’s kind opposing it in all ways possible, it can’t help but long for something else. For something better. It can’t help but cry out for help, knowing very well the futility of it’s words.
(ah, I went overboard. Probably look like an overdramatic edgy teen. Had fun writing this tho, and the feelings I felt while listening to this amazing theme where definitely real)

I interpret Zero Two as just some evil creature. The music is sad, yes, but it's also very dramatic, very intense, which suits the situation well, because this is the final boss, the source of all Dark Matter, which is basically like, 90% if not more of all the evil in the Kirby universe. The reason it's sad is not necessarily because Zero Two is sad, or wants to be put out of its misery- It's because the very nature of Zero Two itself is sad. It destroys, and conquers, and corrupts, because that's all its ever known. That's all it ever was, is, and will ever be. It's not just evil, it's an embodiment of darkness, cursed to exist for eternity (until you killed it, lol, but who's to say it won't come back from the dead again?) without ever being able to know happiness, warmth, or love. It does not long for these emotions, for it does not know what they are- It probably can't even begin to comprehend them. It's empty inside, cursed with a miserable existence it probably isn't even aware of, and it doesn't WANT to be put out of its misery; It NEEDS to be put out of its misery. For the sake of the universe, and for the sake of itself, but it won't go down without a fight.
However, this is just my interpretation of it. I guess we'll never know, since we actually know more about Zero and Zero Two than we do about Shinichi Shimomura, the person who created them. No pictures, no heresay, no anything. All we know is that he was the developer of the Dark Matter Trilogy, and that he worked on Nightmare In Dreamland, before his name vanished from all Kirby products and hasn't resurfaced since, even to this day, so he's either extremely dedicated to remaining as anonymous as possible, or he's dead. I guess someone could ask Jun Ishikawa, who's the person who actually made the music for the fight, but not only may he not remember, but it's pretty likely that Shimomura himself told Ishikawa to give the track a sad tone. Maybe he asked them why, and they gave him a good explanation, but even if they did, and even if he still remembers said explanation, it's incredibly unlikely that anyone is ever going to get the chance to ask Ishikawa about Zero Two. In short, we can only theorize, but maybe that makes this amazing final boss battle even more special than it already was. I mean, people are still thinking about it almost twenty years later- That's pretty amazing, honestly

I'm glad so many other people have been captivated by this incredibly interesting video game character in the same way I have. Even still, I think my theory is closer to Shimomura's intentions than anyone else's theory. It just.. Seems more fitting.

That would be like saying I'm part my own brother, because we were both born from the same person, and even then, that would be being kind of generous. Dark Mind, Zero, and maybe even Drawcia, were all created from Astral Birth Voids, which is the final phase that Void Termina enters before becoming a Zero/Dark Mind/Drawcia, and that phase of Void Termina can only come to be by filling it with negative emotions. If Void Termina is filled with positive emotions instead, a creature like Kirby (also Meta Knight, too, likely) is born. So, basically, both Zero and Kirby are both different forms that Void Termina can take, so maybe it would be more accurate to say that both Zero and Kirby are both part Void Termina, since both Zero and Kirby come from Void Termina. Zero just comes from a Void Termina in a negative state, which causes it to turn into Astral Birth Void, while Kirby comes from a positive version that we probably didn't end up encountering in Star Allies.
Also yeah, Zero is my personal favorite villain, and is also definitely the character closest to being a main antagonist that we've had throughout the entire series, although I wouldn't exactly consider it to be the actual main antagonist- Just the closest we've had. The Dark Matter species as a whole, however? THAT, I would consider to be the actual main antagonist, considering they make up 50%, if not more, of all the conflict that happens in the games. Dark Matter Swordsman is responsible for stealing the rainbows in Kirby's Dreamland 2; Zero is responsible for breaking Popstar's rings and corrupting areas and bosses; Zero Two is responsible for the desecration of Ripple Star (It was likely that Miracle Matter was the one who led the actual invasion, with Zero Two commanding it to launch said invasion); Dark Mind is responsible for completely and singlehandedly fucking up the entire Mirror World, creating Dark Meta Knight (Who in turn went on to corrupt Queen Sectonia), and then trying to conquer said world; Drawcia turned the entire world into paint; Dark Nebula uh.. Well, it existed, and caused problems, I guess; The Master Crown possibly influenced Magolor to deceive Kirby, and later possessed Magolor himself in an attempt to take over the entire universe; Dark Crafter.. Uh, what did he do again?; Dark Matter may have had some sort of influence on Star Dream; And Dark Matter's origin was what Hyness and the three mage sisters were trying to summon in Star Allies. So yeah, Dark Matter is pretty much the main antagonist of the entire series. The only main antagonists who weren't related to Dark Matter in any way were Marx, Yin Yarn, and Necrodeus.

Something that still baffles me to this day, is the fact that in Ocarina of Time, Nintendo considered that Ganon spitting blood was too "violent" and required a censorship. 02 is probably the most terrifying being in all of Nintendo. Not because of its power even though it is massive, not because of its design even though it’s creepy, but because of what it represents in Kirby. Kirby represents light, good, happiness, friendship and freedom. 02 is the anti Kirby. He represents darkness, evil, anger, sadness and lack of freedom and that’s its goal, to eradicate the concept of free will from those who live among the stars. Think about it, 02 creates the dark matter and what is their main ability? Their main ability is control, they take over people and use their bodies for their own gain. If the dark matter can control someone as powerful as the king of dream land with ease, just imagine what 02 can do. 02 is the most threatening presence in Nintendo because of its presence. It doesn’t even have to show its face and you would know how scary the thing is just because of the monsters it creates. So the next time you play this game, be thankful that Kirby is so powerful because if he wasn’t, the all consuming mass of dark matter would take over everything
I feel like 02 is more like a representation of the lack of emotions, it just does what It came to do, feeling nothing but emptyness, without caring the pain that all of that might cause.

One may notice that, in dream land 3, zero harmed himself in nearly all of his attacks, cutting himself, bashing into Kirby, and even, of course, ripping his eye out of it’s socket. However, in doing all this, he doesn’t even flinch. In this game, he only attacks by shooting tears and some sort of gas from his tail. As well as this, you can see that he hurts when hit. Zero has gained a new feeling since the last fight, and it’s pain.

This song is beautiful in how it perfectly communicates the feeling of the battle. Noone wanted it to come to this, but it was inevitable. Kirby and 02 are oblidged to engage in this battle of attrition. It isn't dazzling, it isn't flashy. It's 2 sides grinding eachother down until only one is left standing.
It especially feels like a slugfest when you know to take out the wings and reduce the fight to pummeling him while he defenselessly cries at you with no chance of damaging you

The scariest villains are those who act with a machine-like purpose and 02 is a perfect example of that.
This thing was born from negative emotions and seeks to eradicate any form of positivity in the universe, whether it be through control or by simply destroying it. It knows nothing else and *can't* know anything else! It could try and feel something other than hatred, but it would be for naught.
02 isn't a machine but how it acts is definitely machine-like: singular, unyielding, unending.
And it reflects this in the boss fight itself. 02 confronts Kirby, who is in essence the opposite of what it represents in every aspect, and gives him an ultimatum: Kill me or be killed (no option to quit on the pause menu). 02 knows it will not stop until all positivity is gone, so it wants Kirby to finally put it out of its misery or die trying. It's both incredibly sad and disturbing for a game about a round pink ball of joy.
02 reminds me of the core from amphibia for the machine-like behavior

The game states 02 is a benevolent creature...one that poses no harm. I see 02 as a tragic villain, incapable of understanding mortal existence. I sees us free-willed beings as suffering, dying, hateful. But under its command, we can find peace under its reign. But we don't want that, mortals want to have the freedom to make their own choices, even if it's the wrong choice. I feel this song reflects 02's pain to us as if its crying to Kirby and Ribbon "Why? Why must you reject my gift? I want to free you from pain. I am trying to give you a good ending, yet you refuse...why?' from 02's perspective its a somber last stand against creatures that reject what it sees as a paradise, like humans rejecting heaven. It cannot grasp mortal decision of "Free Will" so it cannot understand why Kirby and the universe fight so hard against it.
Meanwhile from Ribbon and by extension Kirby's perspective, is a dismal last stand against a being that will stop at nothing to control them. They don't know of its nature, Ribbon might, we don't know. But to them 02 is a power-hungry, megalomaniac of a god that will stop at nothing to control all of creation. The song from their perspective is one of sorrow and fear, they're fighting something they cannot understand, and the fear that any moment, if they fall, all of creation will too.
The whole Dark Matter trilogy is about a misunderstood god that cannot be understood nor can understand those to rile against its message of supposed freedom. And it ends in the god's death...until it finds a new way of saving mortals from their suffering, to reincarnate itself in the image of their savior...Kirby. It rebirths itself into the form of the puffball, but cannot grasp what it's name should be...it's all Null and Void. But that doesn't matter, names don't matter if there is no creation to learn it. But now, it is Void, instead of control to free them, it shall exterminate all life to free them. A terminal...a *Void Termina*

ok so it took me years but I finally beat the boss rush mode a few years back, and can I just say, the moment of the INTENSITY of this song playing in the background as you're facing the final boss with prob 1 hp or even full hp if you're doing the no hit challenge You feel every single ounce of the song pouring in as you're sat with one final challenge, one final boss, one final fight before its all over. it gives you that feeling all over again from fighting it the first time but even more intense and I love it.

Several years ago I bought this game on the Nintendo Wii Shop. I always got the bad ending because I never figured out how to obtain the remaining shards so in the end I stopped playing. I figured out how to obtain them only today. So I turned on my Wii and played this game from the beginning. And I reached 02 only few moments ago. When I defeated him, I felt like I finally accomplished what I couldn't do when I was a kid. And it feels great.

I always liked that Zero Two is so powerful that he prevents outversal beings from time dilating out of the fight (aka peventing players from quitting the level) almost like he's trapping you in such a way that he Wants you to take him down and he knows you can do it. It makes the fight way sadder.

It's so intense and epic, the adrenaline rush from you and the boss being at your last bit of health cannot be understated.
I'd even go as far to say that is this the absolute peak of Final Boss fights.
In atmosphere only. The fight itself is easy as hell, especially since you can clip 02's wings. Even still, great fight. Wouldn't say best fight, but definitely up there.
@@captainblue5096 everyone says 02 is "easy" but he's more of a puzzle. I could not for the life of me figure out how to beat this guy, and he trounced me. Then I accidentally hit his wing a few times and I saw he was missing one. Then I learned how to lead my shots while avoiding him. And eventually beat him. If you go in blind, he's actually a really good challenge.

Until Void Termina in Star Allies, this was the most ultimate and high-stakes a final battle had been for Kirby, and looking retroactively at the lore tells you so much. There’s nothing that ticks me off more than people calling Dark Matter the ultimate and overarching villain of Kirby when Zero’s been here all along. There’s a reason the Hyper Zone is the background of Void’s splash screen, there’s a reason the arena for Void resembles Dark Star.
Zero is the evil reincarnation of Void and true foil to Kirby.

The way this song almost feels like it’s crying for zero two is honest to god so amazing. Kirby final bosses have always been crazy, all for their own reasons, but in my opinion, no other Kirby final boss has ever felt quite like this one.
The REAL 02, forgotten by all but god amongst men!
Here’s a tip I found out on like my eighth playthrough. Instead of shooting through 02‘s halo the first couple times, shoot its wings until they're destroyed. This will keep 02 from targeting you and basically lets you skip the phase where you shoot its eye for the rest of the fight.

This music was absolutely perfect for demonstrating the true scale of the enemy you were facing and really encapsulated that feeling of hopelessness knowing it was just you and this was it, this was the end.

Still the greatest final boss theme in video game history.
To elaborate further over a year later, this doesn't sound like anything else before and after it in terms of the franchise's history. There hasn't been a Kirby game where the music genuinely sounds this depressing, somber and ultimately, final in sheer scope. Like something you'd hear from the final boss of a Square Enix-esque JRPG. It almost feels out of place even in an retroactively E10+-rated game.
I heckin love that. I really want to find some amazing OST like this one..

Something I notice is that, this is actually the only instance (maybe not) where the ost takes a turn for the darker. The regular boss theme is a fun one and the other boss themes sound more like you play with them. Shiver star might come close, but this. This is in your face, which shows that you found the incarnet of negativity. There is no facade, you have a final face of against the true enemy. No happyness to roll yourself into
