The gunplay is a mix between fallout and counter strike in my opinion. So people expecting something else especially COD fans will find this game jarring at first with the gameplay. But once you get use to it and the unpausing looting system it just gets so addictive. Many fans have put hundreds of hours into it, which is an impressive feat for a single player focused shooter.
Myself i play this game just for the fun, nothing serious just fun. My favorite campaigns are Battle of the Bulge and Kos. But somehow the controles of the planes sucks.
Game don't have a great gunplay because it suppose to feel like a regular soldier that take time to aim and hide behinde cover. Game probably feel like it's still in early access because developer uses pre-made stuff he made for game to construct map (and because team of developers is quiet small). Game have a map and mission editor along with modding SDK, so base of the game was mostly build to support placing pre-made decorations on the map.
Overall the game doesn't seem horrible, but I would much rather play Enlisted for free in which both the graphics and gunplay seem better. Or just even gather up some more money and just play Hell Let Loose instead, which is what both these games seem to be inspired by, though you need a better PC for it.
Both don't have single player (I don't like PvP), ER2 have a tons of content more with official campaigs and Workshop one, so is more a think of tastes, no who is better
Easy Red 2 is not inspired by Hell Let Loose. They're almost totally different genres despite both being set in WW2. The mechanics in Easy Red 2 have much older roots, more a hybrid of Battlefield 1942 sandbox, Hidden & Dangerous 2 inventory management, and Brothers in Arms squad commands, and with linear missions structured like old CoD and MoH games including asymmetrical balancing (both in available units and in total AI count per faction). It's a type of game we haven't seen since the more niche entries of the early-to-mid 2000s, which is probably why it seems to confuse a lot of modern TH-camrs discovering it for the first time who are expecting either a casual arena shooter (modern CoD) or a hardcore milsim (HLL). Whereas Easy Red 2 mostly caters to a single player/PvE experience with fully independent bots, Enlisted and its AI are tailored for PvP grinding, with bots that don't function independently of the player. Enlisted might be "free," but it's extremely grindy and borderline pay-to-win overall; you'll end up spending a lot more in it over time than buying all of Easy Red 2+DLCs if you don't want to feel like every match is unfair. If you care about the historical theme, Enlisted is also the worst of the bunch as it adds virtually every prototype unissued weapon ever conceived in order to justify grinding or the sale of exclusive "premium" unit types. This might be personal opinion, but I'd also argue the gunplay in Easy Red 2 is better than Enlisted; ER2's weapons have more weight to them, and you don't have to deal with any of the arbitrary upgradable soldier/weapon stats that Enlisted uses to justify grinding/paying. As for Hell Let Loose, it and Squad 44 are hardcore team-based PvP milsim shooters. Maps are wide open and designed around two opposing teams balanced 1-to-1 by human player count, and they feature more mechanics (such as logistical squads) tailored for rounds that last about an hour rather than having a shorter-length linear mission structure.
I prefer ER2, I have all the games you mentioned too. Played them all. ER2 is better to me from growing up with singleplayer ww2 games. If you're not looking for singleplayer ww2 style shooter, yes go play HLL or enlisted.

I wouldn't call your allies squadmates but i would call them "mobile cover"
The ai may have been following you because if you are squad leader you will have them automatically follow you. Hold tab for command wheel

The problem with the games you listed is they are not available for Macs. ER2 is, and very playable.
