  • Anilao - a small, quiet, and unassuming coastal town about three hours south of Manila in the province of Batangas, is considered to be one of the most extraordinary diving destinations in the world. Known for its thriving coral ecosystems, this dive destination's reputation precedes itself as the foremost macro diving capital of the world. Divers who specialize in macro-photography (ultra close up high definition image capture) and videography flock to this seaside dive town to try their hand at documenting the unprecedented variety of ultra-tiny nudibranchs, crabs, shrimp, and fish which make this place their home. While I have heard about Anilao from many dive photographers and videographers i've met during my travels, I simply couldn't appreciate how extraordinary the diving would be. Anilao diving is an experience unlike any other in the south pacific - the shear volume of life in these waters is overwhelming. Anilao diving is accessible, relaxed, and one of the greatest opportunities to refine photography and videography skills.
There are over 100 dive resorts to choose from in Mabini, which is a small peninsula just to the south west of Batangas. I had the good fortune and opportunity to find my way to The AquaVenture Reef Club, which is regarded as the original dive resort in the area. Through the years, the AquaVenture Reef Club earned its reputation as the foremost outfitter in the region, catering to divers from all over the world, and specializing in supporting experienced macro photographers. Having transitioned to new ownership during the pandemic, this exceptional dive resort underwent a a dramatic transformation. It is now fully operational and welcoming guests from all corners of the earth - featuring some of the finest dive amenities you could expect in the Philippines.
Aside from the exceptional facility, and immediate proximity to the best dive sites in the region, it's the staff which really sets this place apart from all the other resorts. From the time I arrived to the time I left, I felt like part of the family. It's rare to find dive resort owners who are truly concerned about the experience of their guests - and I must say - AquaVenture Reef Club exceeded my expectations in every way. Special thanks to Steve, Lhyn, Chris, and Robert for making my stay truly memorable.
In Part I of my "This is Anilao" series, I hope you enjoy the tour of the facility, and my first dive in Anilao, at a dive site called "Cathedral" (renowned for its consistently exceptional macro diving).

It was a great pleasure to host you, I think you should have mentioned that you came here as a fully paid guest. When you you were reseraching the resort I had no idea who you were and we are so honoured you chose us.

Thank you Steve! This is the truth ladies and gentlemen - I found AquaVenture after exhaustively researching (and contacting) multiple dive centers. Steve reached out to help me coordinate the entire experience - he is truly passionate about diving in Anilao. Definitely get in touch with him if you're considering a trip! This video is my personal tribute to the staff which sets AquaVenture apart from all the other operators in the area.

Glad you enjoyed it! Next episode has footage from a place called Sombrero Island, which had the most exceptional soft coral diversity i've ever seen.
