    That's amazing. Thank you! Because there was one annoying guy who played tough defence on me in the social league, and had his hands on me, but apparently it wouldn't be a foul.

    Really good video!, i do have a question, In the NBA there seems to be a lot of swiping when driving down to the basket to move the defenders arm out of the way, would this swiping motion be legal in FIBA if it is done within the offensive players cylinder?

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Technically it should be a foul since an offensive player is using their arm to gain an advantage, but it does not get called often. Seems like most offensive players get the benefit of the doubt and more leeway on what they are allowed.

  • @TomatoTomato911

    the extending arm by dribble is rarely called unless it involves pushing or hooking as its a basic defensive stance against body checks and nfl style steal in case the refs doesnt call it causing an easy turnover.

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right! Only when it causes a big advantage but minor ball protecting style is allowed.

  • @michasawczyn5541

    Hey! Great video! Still got question. During dribbling, defender on me tries to steal the ball and I use my off arm (inside my cilinder) to swipe his arm reaching, is it an offensive foul?

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can be called as one, toughest thing about reffing is the different interpretations across the world. Typically a swipe would not be called unless you are outside your offensive cylinder.

    Hello, i have a question...if I'd like to sign for an Euroleague team/or any other European club, do i need to be registered in the federation of my country?? I'm from Colombia. Thanks

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This sounds more like a basketball team question unless I read it wrong. Usually, leagues can have imports, so if they consider you an import then you are competing for the amount of import slots (Varies from 1-4ish). If you are not an import, you are competing for non-import spots (8-12ish).

    hi, sorry can't find your video, is slapping or high five the shooter's hands after releasing the ball would be a foul? is it act of shooting when he still in the air? and ordinary foul when landed? thanks

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be deemed a play on due to it not affecting the play but if it continues on shots, a conversation or foul would occur.

      I have a decent understanding of other rules, I believe NBA, WNBA, NCAA, and NFHS have hand being apart of the ball. Fiba does not have that written in the rules which results in a contact call

  • @sFde46

    Hey I've got a question, which is hard to explain: when an attacking player drives towards the basket with a ball and a defender is running next to him with his torso turned at the attacker. Does the attacker have a right of way? That is, does the defender need to keep his distance or can he just run straight, not allowing (in a way forcing) the attacker to get under the hoop or "push" out of bounds. When i'm playing with friends I try to run straight, but the attacker starts to bump me with his shoulder and asks for a defensive foul cause I did not move/let him get in the "paint", saying I've cut him off.

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When guarding the ball, time and space do not apply. So whoever gets there first, is entitled to the spot. If they purposely run into you and you beat them to the spot, then they are responsible for the contact.

    I have a question- If i am a defender and if during a steal/ shooting motion i swipe at the ball and i get ball first & the ball dislodges out of his hand but on the follow through my hand then also hits their arm after that , would that be considered a hit/foul ?

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most officials will rule it incidental contact unless egregious. Or as the NBA sometimes refers it to as "Hot stove contact". In most cases, no.

  • @boukyakunosenritsu
    @boukyakunosenritsu ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you very much, but I didn't understood 5:12 - 5:27 situation. It means, that if offensive player has the ball, defensive player doesn't move, and offensive player pushing defender with his back - it's defensive, not offensive foul? Isn't it "pushing" foul from offensive player? Or offensive players are allowed to push with their back, while dribbling?

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is because a defender has his kneed extended out of his cylinder stopping the movement of the offensive player

  • @henrigibot4233

    hi, so when you push an opponent below the rim with your body for a rebound its a foul ? Thank you in advance

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  ปีที่แล้ว

      By rule, yes. It is not always clear cut, interpretation and game scenario can vary the application of the rule but if someone is clearly pushing the player, they should be penalized

  • @pieterpieter4837

    what if someone is backing you down in the post? can you use your hand to push against them?

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on your Points of Emphasis in the league. Most referees will allow one point of contact that is not extended. Based on their understanding of advantage and disadvantage

    watching recent fiba international games it seems fiba is now allowing ball handler backing defender down with their back like Shaq does instead if calling offensive fouls.

  • @arno7163

    I have 2 questions
    Question 1 : is it a foul when you jump vertically in your cylinder and have both hands up vertically but the offensive player shoots and the way he shoots causes your hand to hit his hand?
    Question 2 : When the offense is trying to base up periodically pushing the defense, they can only use their shoulder and their arm in a closed shell while being in their cylinder? Also if they stick out their elbow to hit the defense what kind of foul would that be? My experience with that was a groin hit and the another guy scored while I was kneeling down in pain. It was a friendly 1v1 but he still insisted it wasn't a foul

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  ปีที่แล้ว

      Q1: No
      Q2: Elbow to groin or head: Unsportsmanlike Foul, accidental hit due to defense going into the offensive players space, defensive cylinder foul (New signal)
      Hope that makes sense. Q2 would be better with video :)
