That is one cool dude. Love Pino. His Fretless work is unmatched; but his work with D’Angelo was awesome; especially on the P-Bass. It’s about TONE; and he definitely has it!😌🎶🎸👍🏾
@@jrdPalacios I haven’t tried them but I’ve heard they’re very high tension, compared to the Thomastik strings which are loose and more ideal for vibrato and bends.
@@DanAfricano is that why Pino plays a P bass with flats? If he can just get 90% of that exact tone with his fingers on single coils or soapbars with rounds why doesn't he just do that?
I put 24k gold plated round-wound strings on my fretless Fender Jazz bass and I never intend on changing them. They truly do settle in and hardly go out of tune. I’m don’t recommend using round wound strings on a fretless because it chews up the fretboard, but that’s just what I wanted for some extra snappiness when slapping. I used to put round wounds on it from time to time but it didn’t suit my style.
It's weird he says he's not that experienced in slap...he did spectacular slap solos and bass lines with Paul Young, a lot harder than what Flea does imo...That slap solo on "Behind your smile" for instance
It might come down to using flatwounds again. As a bass player I can tell it is quite a lot down to type of strings. I am playing flatwounds all the time and I was convinced my slap game was pretty much non-existent. I had to put on roundwounds for one instance and I slaped to fool around and I am sure I could have crushed any slapper within a 100 mile radius.
I still think the best tone Pino ever had was on his WAL. To get a tone that is truly unique to a fretless bass you need the pickup close to the bridge. On the WAL it's very close, and the "neck" pickup is almost as close to the bridge as some bridge pickups, so it is ideal.
His pop work in the '80s & '90s proves how gifted & inspired he is. But ever since that P-bass with flats, I can hardly tell what notes he's playing. :^/
how the fuck is this dude so interesting and yet the most normal dude i've ever seen? take the sunglasses and the tiny earring off and he could be working in any job you picture. dude just oozes competence. You could think the guy was a mechanic or former professional soccer player.
The Sex Pistols stole equipment from Keith Richard's Mansion when he was Touring w the Stones. They recorded their 1st Album with it. lol I know that the Guitarist and Drummer were prolific in "Break and Enters" before the Pistols to fund their existence. After the Pistols ended they went to SAmerica to hang out w Ronnie Biggs, "The Great Train Robber". Ronnie was the one who funded the Pistols to play the Queen's Jubilee.
I'm making an educated guess: It sounds as if it was not on and they took ambient sound either from another mic or from the camera. Been there, done that, cried in my sleep about it...
I love how Questlove is working hard to do the bass community justice :)
Pino is just so graceful, his playing is so inspiring.
Nah. Gary Willis smokes him and needs your support more than ever.
@@percyvolnar8010Yeah music is a competition and whoever plays the fastest wins didn’t you know!?!?!?
@ ... says the guy with poor reading comprehension.
First time hearing him talk! What a cool chill guy
Yes, he's got a lovely soft Welsh accent.
RIGHT!?
He's indeed a chill guy
He’s more of a man of action!
Fantastic player and a big influence on my playing, I learn so much from Pino.
Only true greats get away with wearing shades indoors: Pino crushed it. Incredible player!
Gary Willis crushes it.
I have a Fernandes Jazz Bass that I bought sometime @ 2003. It came with flat wounds that sounded incredible, they're still on there.
LEGEND LEGEND LEGEND !!!
I been playing my Moon Bass
since 1995.
Had it Custom Made
while I was in Japan...
Very nice! It's in my bucket list!

Sad he never mentioned his StingRay. It defined his entrance to many players.

Pino ❤
He's slapping at the end of "How Does it Feel?" Pino is a beast.
No . Raphael sadiqq
Raphael did it use D'angelo's ESP bass.
My favourite bass player by a long way. Thanks for sharing 👍
His son Rocco is also killing the game
I use the same Thomastik strings that Pino does, they’re expensive as hell but they haven’t corroded at all, I’ve had the same set for years.
The voodoo ones are labella jamerson .110
@@jrdPalacios I haven’t tried them but I’ve heard they’re very high tension, compared to the Thomastik strings which are loose and more ideal for vibrato and bends.
@@myworms also i think that pino was playing in D standard for some of voodoo so high tension string can help with the drop of tension of that tuning.
I think any true bassists know tone come from the fingers. It’s all about touch
Very true!
Tone is stored in the balls
That's a part of it but no, strings themselves have an enormous effect on tone.
90% of your tone comes from your fingers. The other 10% comes from the fingers on your other hand.

...hum I love Pino, it's my fav' with Tony Levin, but no, his slap is not harder than Flea's, I mean on technical way.
My main bass I always record with has the same strings that came with it in 2008, sounds great
Bello/magnifico.🌡️🌡️🌡️🌡️🌡️🌡️👑
Great bassist and I’ve had round wounds on one bass from 1991 ,sound great

The 🐐! P bass for the win!
I remember from years ago, 70s probably, a country bass player (Nashville ?) advertising for old strings cos he broke one.

James Jameson had the opposite approach. He actually had really high action, thicker strings and played hard!!
"nooooo fukk it"!!😂😂😂😂😂
2:13 makes sense
If you put hand lotion on a new set of flats it will deaden the strings so they sound older.
His strings are 30 years old damn
🙏🏽💀❤️
So... talking about mics, what happened? Is this scratch audio? All the mics were dead?
They recorded, we mix with their audio...
How stoned is Pino rn he’s the only dude with sunnies on in there

Epic. Epic behavior.
I play bass and its all in the hands
...hum...
Why is questloves mic so shit?
I'm making an educated guess: It sounds as if it was not on and they took ambient sound either from another mic or from the camera. Been there, done that, cried in my sleep about it...
hella fretless player!
Only use heavy flats on my PBass. Haven’t changed them in years.. why would you ask Pino about slap Bass…really?!
199 fucking 3???????
Funny how someone who doesn’t play bass or guitar simply knows absolutely nothing about it
*PromoSM* 😳
Way too many ppl on this podcast and still Quest’s mic sounds like crap? Hard pass
I don't get it, He is known for playing a MM fretless, it put him on the Music map.
At this point, I would say it’s 50-50 . It’s always been a p and then for fretless it’s always been the music man.
Jaco = J-Bass
Pino = P-Bass 😅 (that's why I chose the latter)
I know something these guys didn't say. You can boil bass strings to bring them back as new, something you can't do with guitar strings.
No one needs 63 kits. This is dry
