    When I brought my Tough System 1 home, I knew that the plastic wheels would be worthless on any surface so already had a modification planned. I removed the plastic wheels and replaced them with 4.10/3.50-4 foam filled (flat free) tires available at Harbor Freight, as well as most hardware stores. I don't recall if I had to drill n change out the axle to a 5/8" rod but I did use a longer one and put a spacer behind the hub so the tire wouldn't rub. I also added a wood block across the front so it sits level. These were simple modifications and it'll roll on any surface. If I was to buy a Tough System 2, I'd do the same thing.

      Shit I might just have to try that out on mine! I have a battery charger and tape measure clip/pencil sharpener combo thing mounted to the back of my rolling box. One of the reasons I like my 1.0 and have been unsure about the 2.0 is not knowing whether or not I’d get to keep that same setup on the back or not.

    The 1.0 definitely seems to be made of a more substantial plastic, and for what I wanted to load into the main bottom box, I don’t know why, but the 1.0 held more items. I liked the tilting handle, and I like the idea of the 1.0 main box going on the wall. I didn’t know that it wouldn’t work.

    I bought the 2.0 small case to upgrade from the canvas bag that came with my drill/driver kit, love that it fits both tools, batteries, the mini cases with drill and driver bits, and I can comfortably fit the mark/measure stuff in one inner bin and a set of sockets and adapters and odds and ends like countersinks and self-centering bits easily in the other.
    Probably going to go with the cart instead of the rolling toolbox as I expand, definitely prefer the flexibility it gives along with having a hand cart on-hand to move other stuff around.

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing your experience. My favorite box is still the DS150 with it's top handle and under-lid storage. I recently saw a small 2.0 toolbox online labeled DS166, which has a handle on top, but it's a "bit sussy" (in the words of my teenager). The box only appears on DeWalt's Australian website and in Europe, which would mean the ones available in the U.S. are either imported (given DeWalt doesn't offer it in the US) or counterfeits.
      Regarding the DS Carrier, it is superior in it's usefulness and durability as compared to the rolling toolboxes in my opinion. It makes a good hand truck and it's wide.

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Utility Cart/Dolly/DS carrier is awesome; however, it’s a beast... I guess that’s a pro and a con. While it’s great for toting given the wheels and sturdiness, it’s bulky. For example wheeling it through a standard inner doorway can be a challenge... there isn’t much clearance. The other drawback is that it’s not that simple to reconfigure (requires Allen key similar to the workshop and van racking systems). If you change out your box configuration for different jobs, it’s a pain. Thanks so much for subscribing!

  • @kevinabbott32

    Nice video. I actually prefer the 1.0 boxes. The tool tray can fit long drill bits in and the lid storage fits way to many bits in to leave it behind with a 2.0 box. The auto latch isn’t good enough for me to leave my 1.0s behind, so the new 2.0 isn’t getting much use at the moment.

The 1.0 tool trays are good for long bits although I just toss my long auger bits in the bottom. 😁 I’m still using both 1.0 and 2.0, but have each setup for different jobs. Hello Bruce, after buying a System 2.0 DS300 and DS150 to try (promo price was irresistible) to compare with equivalent 1.0 here are a few observations.
    1) I don't usually lock boxes together (just stack them, they stay put in the van) but I will admit that the new catches do work well if you want this. If you don't it is a nuisance. It doesn't makes sense to delete the top handle on the DS150 as this is the type of box most likely to be at the top of the stack, I would think.
    2) No top handle on the DS150. I hate this. I have 8 x DS150s (2 - Plumbing tools 2 - Electrician tools 1 - small general tools 1 - screws 1 - fixings 1 - power tools. Most are carried with the top handle because if I use the side handle the contents gets completely disorganised in a heap at one side.
    3) No storage drawers in the lid of DS150. Major setback. I use these for lots of small components and tools. I find them very useful.
    4) Stability. I often use my DS300 as a "hop up" to stand on when I need a bit more height. The extra width of the 2.0 makes it wobble, and looking underneath you will see that the feet of the box are inset on one side which causes this, so it feels unsafe.
    5) Occasionally I use the toughsystem trolley to take carry the boxes if I can't park right outside the job, and it works well. The brackets on the back of system 1.0 allow me to lock all the boxes on to the trolley when I take a tea/lunch break and they can't be removed or opened (top one has to be locked though). Surprised they deleted this. Penny - pinching ?
    6) The extra width of the new 300 makes it more awkward to carry with top handle. This seems trivial but try it. Load a system 1 ds300 and a system 2 ds300 and carry one on each side. The new one rubs against your leg. It is bloody annoying. By load I mean at least 30lbs.
    7) No air vent screw in the new boxes. These are used to let air into the box to equalise the pressure. Because the box is, or should be, airtight you might find in winter that you put the boxes away overnight and in the morning you can't open the lids because the pressure has dropped inside and caused a partial vacuum. The vent allows you to let air in. The improved seals are probably going to make this worse. I look forward to the videos showing people pouring warm water (pissing?) onto the boxes to get them to open.
    8) No full length tote trays on the 300 and 400. This is a showstopper for me. I have 3 x 300s and 3 x 400s and I use tote trays in all of them. I love them. So I won't be buying anymore system 2 boxes, but I will be getting some used system 1 boxes when I need more.
    I absolutely love my system 1 boxes which is why the system 2s are such a let down.
    P.S in case you're wondering, I use Bosch 18v tools with L Boxxes which is why I don't have more DS boxes. The L boxxes are nowhere near as good but that is another story.

I’m sure folks will find your insights helpful. have to agree the lack of handle on the DS150 2.0 is a huge disappointment. As far as small tool boxes go, the System 1 DS150 is my favorite small box and I have a few as well. Brilliant insight regarding the air vents too. I’ve never had an issue getting boxes open but it makes total sense if there are drastic changes in temperature. Thanks again!

      The vertical organiser will just pull up and come out in one piece. Don't through it away though. Someone will need it. Here in the UK dealers often sell off DS400s cheap because they came with power tools in as part of a deal. They sell the tools separately and end up with a box with no tote or organiser which they sell off. If you were in the UK I would buy it.

    Talking about warranties, DeWalt make a lot of noise about lifetime warranties but here in the UK they only give 12 months. When asked why they said "they never break so it doesn't matter". If it doesn't matter why only 12 months? Guess what? I have had 2 x DS400s with broken side handles outside of the 12 month warranty. They can't handle the weight when full. so now I only use the top handle. I had to buy a new DS400 then take the broken one back after 3 months and claim a refund using the receipt from the new one.

      @@BruceAlanR I hate when companies change up systems like this. It's like a production run only dedicated to one specific system and all that money invested in it. Not only does it cost the manufacturer to change things but also the end user. Making the product useless. And wasteful.
      Imagine if all the cordless brand companies all invested into the same battery for each product they produced. Now all these tools would use the same platform. Creating a stable cheap option. Now all you have to worry about is the actual tool. No more random chargers, hundreds of batteries brands and looking for deals. And some brands like Makita use 2 18v batteries. Which would increase the tools performance.
      Today there's basically 2 types of lithium batteries. But every brand has their own version. And they also come in various voltages. Take Milwaukee. M18 and m12. They could easily build smaller batteries for both those lines.

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree! If nothing else there should be cheap adapters so different product lines can work together and don’t go to waste. I remember when DeWalt moved from the 18V to 20max platform (it was more a repackaging and rebranding exercise than a breakthrough.. but at least they eventually released that goofy battery adapter). And I love the idea of one battery for all tools so that manufacturers would have to focus on the tools and less on power delivery. I remember seeing some adapter system on eBay or Amazon that allowed interchanging Milwaukee M18, Ryobi, Makita, and DeWalt battery packs on different brands of tools, but I’d be afraid to try it. I’d be pretty annoyed if some $25 adapter blew up one of $200 tools.

    • @PFab
      @PFab 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BruceAlanR so from what I hear, Milwaukee trade marked the "18v" and created a revenue from it. So any company who uses the 18v system has to pay royalties to Milwaukee. ( Marketing scam) Most likely why DeWalt moved out of that number and created the 20v system. But I'm reality it's still like an 18v system. But Makita, Ryobi, Rigid and a few others are still using this and are forced to pay these fees to Milwaukee. The red king knew this system would be used vastly with other tools because the battery packs are going to be the most efficient in this voltage.

    • @PFab
      @PFab 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Makita, also as far as I know, is the only company using a battery protection system in the battery pack itself. Unlike Milwaukee. They use their protections in the tool itself. Not sure about DeWalt.

    System 2 if you have a tool box on top, the lid won’t stay open, you have to hold it open. I returned it.

    7:39 Thanks for pointing this out. I'm not going to support apartheid for a plastic box. I'll take my business elsewhere. #BDS

    7:08 Great for storing small parts? Seriously dude, not everyone is one of these IQ 60 construction workers, these can be great for people who mostly use small tools.

    not all plastics are the same.
    were i was working for decades the co started using these "small" (fits three wide in a trailer) plastic pallets. two styles were show to us. one was nest-able, not the other. the co went with the nesting kind. but the problem. was the mtr they were made of. the non nest-able the plastic gave a bit. the nest-able was far more ridged. well the nest-able style keep getting the legs snapped off. missing one leg made them junk, as in none usable. the non nest-able style would bend long before snapping off. (forklift, power jacks, just dropping, etc). both would have done this job, weight, etc.

    Tip for all the companies. First one designs their system so you can get to all the boxes without unlatching them will get my business!! . When your doing maintenance/remodeling/ rentals, etc you need to be able to link them together quickly and you need to be able to get your tools without taking them all apart again. A lot of times I will be working in a customers home, or apartment and I don't want to spread out all the boxes. There is a small system on market , but I don't think will work for a pro for durability . I.M.O.

    2.0 bottom box pain when working outside, when you open it tips water into box. The old one didn't

      Thanks for sharing that. I’ve actually found water on top to be an issue with both 1 and 2.0. I usually grab a blower to remove water prior to opening them. It’s a pain, but sure beats water on my tools.

    2.0 bottom box should open like 1.0 so any water on the top wont go into the box.
