I think it's TOTALLY worth the price. It's a really fun build, the result is a great toy that you won't want to turn off, and there's a LOT of "room" for customization afterwards. You can re-gear it quite easily so it has a faster top speed at the expense of low-end torque, if you want to go there - just swap the two almost-exposed gears that hook the drive motors to the differentials (behind the center covering elements you can see at 15:05)
Just got this set in today. Managed to find one NIB on ebay for only $130usd shipped. I thought the price might be too good to be true, but it wasn't! I appreciate the review, Sariel!
I wish i had this stuff when i was little.. I had Legos but nothing cool like this.. The best thing i got out of my creations was blowing them up with Firecrackers.. Funny how i grew up and my job is doing underwater demolitions haha. How ironic. Thanks Lego for all the fun times!
Very nice review, for a second I thought of saving money for this one then your review came out and I thought I should just stay with my 8110 Unimog U400
What are the Power Puller Wheels? Is there anything special in them or are they just really big wheels. I might get them and I want to know if they are worth it.
a couple of questions 1. How much does it cost? 2. Are you gonna transition to using the new motors more often? 3. Is that even allowed in the TT races? maybe as a special class? 4. Is there any special parts specific to this set? AND THIS IS THE COOLEST SET LEGO HAS MADE!
I like the way your pet hamster appears. Its like he was trying to help source the right parts for the build. Its a nice toy but the recent crawler comp winner essentially made a classic body vehicle version of this, shame Lego didn't make a Jeep Wrangler like your custom or a Cuscoo Land Rover RC.
I thought I'd grown out Lego. I'm a design engineer by trade, currently designing a digger but have worked on trains and Triumph bikes and DAF trucks. I always think my job will satisfy any need to create things.. but I find myself on youtube watching lego videos. I think I need to buy some :D
Hello Searme, i'm really amazed by the quality of your bulids and your vids, keep me dreaming please! here, i've got one thig to critisize: lego misused the name crawler...it's a truggy. crawlers are front-engined-all wheel steer-open wheeled-tubular buggies...built all the ways possible to withstand extreme climbing traction and rollovers. a truggy is a reinforced all terrain vehicle, with a lifted body, rollcage, and sometimes some bodypanels left. yeah, it's just technical word i know. :D
DesignJunkie58 You're right. I've bought the 42009 and pimped it with six motors and four IR sensors including comtrollers. And it's much better than the crawler.
It is big, but it does not require extra gearing as it rotates at just the right speed. So even though personally I rarely have any need for return-to-center steering, the proportional steering looks interesting and I'm sure I will be using servo a lot.
Hello Sariel! Just wondering, but I've been watching many videos by you and Mahj and I've grown rather interested in power functions... Would this set be a good starter set to get into making my own MOCs?
Nice review, i had a few questions, however they got almost all answered in the video. Do you see your models using the servo motor for steering? i think it is a bit big and awkward , and that a M motor already does that job very well. Looking forward for more of your videos!
Pomocy! ;)
Will you leave the stickers on or scrape them off to use the panels? Also, are your batteries weak? Conchinas had his climb up the wall and flip over - repeatedly.
On the comparison trial 1. Did u use new batteries? 2. Any chance u pushed the moving parts way to close to other non moving parts? I recently rebuild the technic offroader N gave the moving parts good clearance and now it runs effin smooth.
PJ Spraker yes it’s good, and don’t worry if it doesn’t do good outside, fact is you can actually swap the ratio from 2:3 to 1:3 in the portal axles’ using an 8 tooth gear and 24 tooth gear (both dark grey)
The LX motor you mentioned at the end of the video. Does it fit into the space for the original motor? Is it possible for you to demonstrate the crawler's capabilities with the LX motor? And also, what is the name of the set for the red jeep that you made the comparison with? That jeep is badass, lol. Thanks
If you ask me, I think Lego should come out with a bigger tire for this particular model. Not the Power Puller Wheel, but larger than whats on it right now!
Question i have built lots of legos though not many of them technic would this be a possible task for me another one how long did this take you to build
How easy would it be to put a 2 Speed Transmission in this thing to allow for more speed one way and more torque the other if the transmission was about 3x8x5 not accounting for the 2 motors? (one for drive and one for gear switching)
I got my 9398 few days ago - I'm astonished how well it can actually go through obstacles. Mine seems to be a lot more powerful than the model shown in video. It can easily climb with front wheels on top of the box and passes the "fist" test without any problems (and my fist is not small ;) ). I did not modify the set in any way... What batteries did you use?
I have this set an i love it. I dont know why but mine has pretty powerful torque. I have it go over things like blankets and pillows and not wheels and it does fine
Is the Jeep better than the fully modded 4X4 crawler shown in the other video and where can I buy cheap power puller wheels? (I only found one on ebay for £45.)
So i'm guessing the Jeep has more torque because it has XL motors? Also, how does this set compare to the 42000 Grand Prix Racer? I know 42000 isn't motorized, but would I be better off buying 42000 and the motors or this set and some other motors? (I wouldn't keep either set put together for long anyways because I would just use the pieces for MOCs)
Thanks for the video - I just bought a Unimog, thought I would get this as well for it's remote functionality...but looking at the power of this thing..I think I'll wait for better release of a remote control Technic. I have yet own a remote control Technic. I have the Unimog (8110), Helicopter (9396), Logging Truck (9397), Super Car (8070), Excavator (42006)...None of them move out of the box....that's why was thinking about getting this kit. But I think I'll pass and get 8109 flatbed truck
Hamster of awesomeness! I mean, it took 17 minutes to build it sped up, must've taken you ages to build that thing! I've got the limited edition version of this and it took me 3 days! But then again I'm not a very experienced technic builder.
i got this set for my birthday, was very awesome but sorta slow. it wasnt going exactly straight so i tried to make it go at least a little bit better and broke a vital u-joint in the process...really should be extras.....i suppose i will order one and be more careful....this is a great, yet sort of challenging set. I would recommend to the lego fans out there
No i powróciłem po 13 latach do Lego. Pytałem gdzieś wcześniej czy dużo się zmieniło, odpisałeś że wszystko się zmieniło, czy coś w tym stylu. Faktycznie, klocki teraz nie produkują w Danii, a np. Chinach m.in.
Its a nice set, but I like your own models more! As you say in the video, LEGO don't really think about the functionality of their models... at least not the same way you do!! Keep up the good work Sariel! =)
HOLY SHIT, it's been 9 years. I remember when I first watched the video. Back then, I was 6, now I'm 15. This brings so much memories.
I think it's TOTALLY worth the price. It's a really fun build, the result is a great toy that you won't want to turn off, and there's a LOT of "room" for customization afterwards.
You can re-gear it quite easily so it has a faster top speed at the expense of low-end torque, if you want to go there - just swap the two almost-exposed gears that hook the drive motors to the differentials (behind the center covering elements you can see at 15:05)
I like how you answer most questions, you really give the literal answer
It really gives you a sense of accomplishment when you finally finish it. Great video!
It definitely needs XL motors
I have this set with XL motors in it
XL motors and no differentials.

Cool Crawler and Time Lapse ! I got this set for birthday .
Amazing film guy, really enjoyed that and gave some excellent inspiration.
Just got this set in today. Managed to find one NIB on ebay for only $130usd shipped. I thought the price might be too good to be true, but it wasn't! I appreciate the review, Sariel!
Thank you for the clarification, and for the kindness in such a quick reply!
I wish i had this stuff when i was little.. I had Legos but nothing cool like this.. The best thing i got out of my creations was blowing them up with Firecrackers.. Funny how i grew up and my job is doing underwater demolitions haha. How ironic. Thanks Lego for all the fun times!
Amazing! Very very cool!!!!!
fine I'll go with the 4x4 crawler for now ...
Ah, memories.
Very nice review, for a second I thought of saving money for this one then your review came out and I thought I should just stay with my 8110 Unimog U400
Great video man! Good job!
love it man! very cool and very thorough :)
3:35 awww hamster:)
Eah! Your own model looks superb!
Actually, I have seen so ingenious and clever GBC modules that I hardly think I could top them. Also, GBC isn't really popular where I live.
One of the best set in the lego technic history
dude taht thing look even cooler and bigger with powerpuller wheels
love the turn table
What are the Power Puller Wheels? Is there anything special in them or are they just really big wheels. I might get them and I want to know if they are worth it.
I might be very late, but those wheels are extremely rare and expensive, but they're the biggest wheels TLG has produced.
one of my all time favourites🥰
i feel bad for the motors lego put in that truck with the right gearing, tires it would be fine but those poor motors *sigh*
4 years ago.. time goes fast since I got mine set
i want this for chrismas but its sooo expensive and ur hamster is really cute :)
a couple of questions
1. How much does it cost?
2. Are you gonna transition to using the new motors more often?
3. Is that even allowed in the TT races? maybe as a special class?
4. Is there any special parts specific to this set?
AND THIS IS THE COOLEST SET LEGO HAS MADE!
Scratch that, found the other video :) Great review by the way !
I love the "it will kill you that night" part thats great
I like the way your pet hamster appears. Its like he was trying to help source the right parts for the build. Its a nice toy but the recent crawler comp winner essentially made a classic body vehicle version of this, shame Lego didn't make a Jeep Wrangler like your custom or a Cuscoo Land Rover RC.

cool time lapse,.just build it myself..got the Unimog as well,. next project,. 8x8x6 RC controlled,...
holy crap so many parts :O
Luv the hamster at the bigining
LOVE THAT HAMSTER
Hello Searme, i'm really amazed by the quality of your bulids and your vids, keep me dreaming please!

wow ,you just have a hardwork thats was so awesome!!my brother need 2 days to finish it
and he,s arm now very hurt
Check the Building section.
I think it's better than Unimog in terms of parts, because it has the same suspension components but with motors.
Hi I love the video! I have a question how is that turntable made at the start?
Your hand must have been burning when you were building! I have these sets and they hurt during assembly! But it pays off after its done.
i am going to get this set today.
Very cool! Have you tested it? Has it any benefit (more fun due to more correct steering). And it works with the same IR-receiver?
4:30 I see what you did there, LEGO! :D
Hello Sariel! Just wondering, but I've been watching many videos by you and Mahj and I've grown rather interested in power functions... Would this set be a good starter set to get into making my own MOCs?
The b-model is a 4x4 truck. Go to brickshelf ,search fro 9398 and then you'll find it!!!
Good review!!
There are three sets and you can also buy the motors separately at LEGO com or at Bricklink.
Nice review, i had a few questions, however they got almost all answered in the video.
Do you see your models using the servo motor for steering? i think it is a bit big and awkward , and that a M motor already does that job very well.
Looking forward for more of your videos!
thinking about to buy it :)
03:34 aww, that hamster is so cute ^_^
Would like to see you put an SBrick into this and show how to improve it's speed since i got this same set. Would be great. :)
sbrick doesnt improve speed... buwizz does

Raczej 42009.
Really like your technic reviews. Hilarious replies to comments. You should get the Sarcasm: Body's natural defense against stupidity T-Shirt.
Do you happen to have a video on how to build the transmission that you use on all of your supercars?
look at that box!....keep looking at that box!
Will you leave the stickers on or scrape them off to use the panels?
Also, are your batteries weak? Conchinas had his climb up the wall and flip over - repeatedly.

2. Any chance u pushed the moving parts way to close to other non moving parts?
I recently rebuild the technic offroader N gave the moving parts good clearance and now it runs effin smooth.
your buddy was the best!
I was just looking for a set with them so i can have a decent RC car. im not a very good builder yet.. i plan on buying your guide
With out all that weight, would it be a lot faster with more torque? I consider getting this model for Christmas and would like I know if it's good.
PJ Spraker yes it’s good, and don’t worry if it doesn’t do good outside, fact is you can actually swap the ratio from 2:3 to 1:3 in the portal axles’ using an 8 tooth gear and 24 tooth gear (both dark grey)

If you ask me, I think Lego should come out with a bigger tire for this particular model. Not the Power Puller Wheel, but larger than whats on it right now!
Hi Sariel, have you tried the alternate build? It's on the official Technic site, an off-road truck. Would be great to see a video of it.
I have looked at peoples reviews and a litle change that you can make with one of the cogs that transfer the power to make it faster.
yes, thought it as well , but the pp's are heavy so the truck will be be less of-road able,
maybe they should evolve new tires
Do you get your lego-toys from LEGO-direct ?From where do you have your models so fast? How can Iget that so fast ,too?
Always, when the "New piece" text appears on-screen, the "found a new item" tune from Zelda series starts playing in my head.
Yes, you may. It's described on my website.
Can I get the motors separately from the model, or do I have to buy the set in order to get the servo motor?
Question i have built lots of legos though not many of them technic would this be a possible task for me another one how long did this take you to build

Depends on the batteries make and on your usage of the Crawler.

What batteries did you use?
The problem are no the kind of battery, it was because they was tired
Will you suggest me to buy this set instead of 42030?
Did you try to fit 2 XL engines, with 2 receivers and 2 battery boxes in the trunck?
Do you think you could do a size comparsen? Thanks if u do but still thanks for the video it was good.
Can you tell me the code number of the red car at the end of your clip? Which you used to compare with 9398... Thanks a lot!
I have this set an i love it. I dont know why but mine has pretty powerful torque. I have it go over things like blankets and pillows and not wheels and it does fine
How would i be able to make it go slower for more torque, I am getting one so i am interested. Thanks
Is the Jeep better than the fully modded 4X4 crawler shown in the other video and where can I buy cheap power puller wheels? (I only found one on ebay for £45.)
which would you recommend for steering for my new 8070 super car? m motor with return to center or servo motor?
i need that set!
5:16 Love it! :D
So i'm guessing the Jeep has more torque because it has XL motors? Also, how does this set compare to the 42000 Grand Prix Racer? But I think I'll pass and get 8109 flatbed truck
Yeah, the new shocks allow for long suspension travel.
--Wish I could buy it.
I wonder when do all the XL MOCs of this model will start showing up :D
just like the 8043 - people did a high power one with the XL motors.
Nice bike
Hamster of awesomeness! I mean, it took 17 minutes to build it sped up, must've taken you ages to build that thing! I've got the limited edition version of this and it took me 3 days! But then again I'm not a very experienced technic builder.
in the torque comparison test in 16:17, r u sure u r using new batteries in the crawler ? cause it seems that the batteries r weak !!
Yes, i think same because i has one and when batteries has 100% (news) it has incredible torque, and in the video it looks very tired..
i got this set for my birthday, was very awesome but sorta slow. it wasnt going exactly straight so i tried to make it go at least a little bit better and broke a vital u-joint in the process...really should be extras.....i suppose i will order one and be more careful....this is a great, yet sort of challenging set. The power of it it really puts me off. On the other and! Where did you find that red Land Rover? Looks amazing! =D
When you buy a set like this one or do you buy two for the parts?
thats my birthday present:)
Its a nice set, but I like your own models more! As you say in the video, LEGO don't really think about the functionality of their models... at least not the same way you do!! Keep up the good work Sariel! =)
