      @@tdali6095 You would be correct if someone below the elite level is seeking advice on what it takes to compete at the highest level... but, I don't think Rykehuss was talking about how Gordon got that good, or what it takes to get that good. He was talking about the elite level where everyone is most likely using steroids yet Gordon seems to excel over them. At that point the difference is skill. It reminds me of when Lance Armstrong was busted, 2nd place, 3rd place, 4th place, etc. were also busted for steroids too.. Lance simply was better than them.

I doubt most practitioners remember all the techniques and details they've learned throughout the years.

    High fight/grappling IQ, strategy, and very important = size/strength at 6'2'' he filled out his ectomorph frame very well. Long levers, when developed properly, are ideal and superior depending on the sport.
    Other details of his physicality that are overlooked: durability, physical training adaptability, and overall athletic instinct. These traits allowed him to survive and THRIVE years and years of grueling abuse and training day in and out. Many people would break, get seriously injured, or lose motivation to keep going. What allowed him to "survive and THRIVE years and years of grueling abuse and training day in and out" is the PEDs. Ryan himself said that he has sustained serious injuries over the years. If it wasn't for steroids, he wouldn't be able to recover as fast, nor train multiple times a day for 6 days a week at the intensity that he does.
      To be clear, I'm not taking anything away from him. But to neglect the elephant in the room is dishonest.

    I've noticed this too about Ryan and his stellar defensive capabilities. What I struggle with isn't as much getting the tap when I'm in position, but getting out of a bad position. I feel like I'm trying to climb out of a muddy hole when I get one of my limbs isolated and I've always seen how the King almost never seems to let himself get in bad situations, and when he does he can seamlessly get out of them with what looks like no effort at all. Derek, this is the doing of the promoters. I lived through the 90s “roid era” as a huge baseball fan. When someone gets as huge advantage and everyone realizes there are no consequences they have a decision. One, they can forego the dream they’ve devoted their life to, which is to be the best, not to “get good naturally”. OR, they can even the playing field again. The second choice is WRONG, let me be clear. But experience has taught us that this wrong choice is absolutely irresistible to top level competitors who have made their life about maximizing every advantage possible in pursuit of a goal. It’s like having a gorgeous escort for a maid and trying to keep away. Some things are not realistic. The promoters need to shut it down. Until then athletes need to make their choice, but only a special few will forego their dreams.

    • @sergiupobereznic
      @sergiupobereznic ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@ajgrant94 You should read my comment again. I didn't say there was a model. I said: It would be good to model his strategy for memorising. And I didn't say he didn't have a good memory. Hence why I would like to understand how he does it. That's the point of modeling the behaviour of succesful athletes and understanding what they do and how they think. There are strategies to memorising. Just because Ryan might not know how he does it, doesn't mean he doesn't use a strategy. Modelling of the strategy is done after the event. Having a natural ability/strategy means there is still a strategy. Some math teachers attach colours to numbers to help students (or themselves) visualise and memorise: that's a strategy. It's called colour-coding. And some people do it naturally. There are techniques, just like BJJ. Maybe it's as simple as devoting more time to memorising. But it would still be interesting to know instead of just saying, he's just got a good memory. Rajan Mahadevan who accurately recited 31,811 digits of pi from memory, and Hideaki Tomoyori who recited 40,000 digits weren't born with extraordinary memories. They have learned techniques for associating strings of digits with imaginary places or scenes in their minds.
      These are strategies that can be modeled.

    • @IordanIovkov
      @IordanIovkov ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are strategies that can be modeled, but some people are just born with amazing memories. I have a few in my own family. They just remember shit, no strategies. It's sometimes even a bit of a curse because they can't turn it off and they remember all the nasty/traumatic stuff perfectly, forever.

There are no rules governing their use in grappling. Athletes are not tested. Absolutely everyone is using them. Everyone. Technique, dedication, hard work, and guts make winners. If all you had to do was take steroids everyone would look like Gordon and Andre and have their accomplishments too.
