  • Blue Angels Winter Training Practice Saturday 1-9-21. Warm and calm today with two practices out at Shade Tree. Tootsie the n#4 pilot came in early from the morning practice and the Diamond took off with #1 and #3 and then #2 and #4 in the afternoon practice all for unknown reasons.

The Rhinos may be "new" to the team, but they're still some of the oldest in the Navy. I saw an interview with former Boss Doyle who was heading up the transition for the team, and he said that one of the jets in the Blues' line was one he had flown when his squadron had first transitioned back in the late 90s.

The sheer engine volume of these gorgeous new(ish) birds diminishes the sound of the pilots communication with one another for the enthusiastic observer who wants to hear and learn to understand what they're talking about, which is a little disappointing, but it’s always nice to see the diamond take off for practice despite this, beginning with smoke on @1:35. Gorgeous shape @2:22, all four jets well aligned with one another, coming gracefully over the top of their loop @2:37, with smoke on until @2:47, where there are - at least as far as my untrained eye is concerned- barely perceptible positioning issues which the pilots themselves aren’t happy with, though Tootsie seems content. Things get better by @2:52, with egress from the loop, when all four jets have smoke on. Strange shape taken up @3:08 to @ 3:21, looking like pairs forming their own echelons, and looking a bit untidy afterward @3:29 to@3:42 - wonder what was going on there? Tootsies Jet may be giving him, and his maintainers some real teething problems; it’s a shame not to see him return from practice at ST with the others @ 3:47, but now is the time to get it all straightened out, otherwise the hoped-for upcoming show season will be a nightmare. The trio coming back look good though, evenly shaped and pluming beautifully. Loose echelon @ 4:17 - understandable since this is only week one of practice. Brief glimpse of the solos rolling out for practice@4:24 - is it me, or are they both a bit grumpy? I imagine they are feeling the weight of public expectation that there will be a show season in the middle of this awful pandemic, so it must be an added hurdle to overcome. The solos seem to have their opening manoeuvres comfortably in place @ 7:24 to @7:38, where there is good crossover - not surprising really since both Chewie and Baxter are experienced Angels, but pitching up for the break on return beginning @8:15 seems uneven - Baxter is like a greyhound, out of the traps before you can bat an eye lid@8:16; Chewie seems much slower by comparison, even though they are both flying at considerable speed, breaking at @8:18 and having to get a considerable wiggle on to catch his partner for the landing stagger @ 8:55. Even though they look close together - almost too close - @9:08 coming into land, Baxter is so quick @9:22 that even with some proximity, Chewie almost gets left behind, not hitting the deck until @9:36; perhaps he’s more cautious with regard to the new airframe, whereas Baxter is extremely familiar and comfortable with it. I think Boss and Chomps went out for a bit of a teaching session@ 10:48, given that, all being well, Chomps is next year's slot pilot, and has to get comfortable with the possibility during training. The diamond burner loop is a difficult manoeuvre to execute at the best of times, more so, perhaps for the slot than anyone else, so small group practice is important and seized on when the opportunity becomes available; it could also be that it’s a manoeuvre that Chomps needs to work on, who knows? All of those reasons may be why Rocket and Tootsie joined them a little later @ 13:25; it may also have been an opportunity for those two to get comfy with the new jets, hence the separate take offs @13:58 ( Rocket) and@ 14:06 ( Tootsie) Really speedy pitch up break from the diamond @14:35 on, far quicker than the Legacies. Impressive! Graceful musical jets @16:22 to a @16:44, with the solos hot on their retiring heels @16:49 , executing opening manoeuvres well once again @17:41 ending with a nice, tight looking cross over between the pair @ 17:54, with speedy Baxter landing-@19:20 -after chucking himself headlong into the pitch up break @18:32 followed by a cautious Chewie@ 19:34,rounding out the day. Brilliant film, Mike - there's always so much to see and speculate on! Enjoy your day off, and, as always, thanks for filming!

These jets got a pounding in the fleet, but now that they are Angels they are under a lot less stress brake wise, but soft landings become a habit after three years with the team, and aerobraking may just be needed by Chewie for a time because Baxter comes in like Cheetah from the pitch up, and doesn't hang about when he gets down, so Chewie has to really kick it to catch up,and the Rhino is a much more powerful jet than the legacy so speedy landings are an issue at the moment. I believe , couple of days ago, Chewie was so close to Battersby in the stagger in an effort to keep up with him that he had to go around for a second landing attempt. Teething problems, nothing that can't be sorted with time.

Every Saturday before Saint Patties Day, we hop in the Landcruiser at 5AM and head down the mountain to Seely. I have not missed a NAF El Centro Airshow in more than 20 years. My favorite memory was their first show with the F-18’s. It had rained a day or so before the show, so the viewing area was pretty goopy, Imperial County Mud. About md-show my wife decided to gonget something out of the car, snack bar, I don’t know. She’s about 40-50 yds away, on the edge of the mud, When, from the back of the viewing area, here zooms in one of the Angels at .95 mach, two feet overhead. Or so it seemed. He was climbing out about 500 yds in front of the audience when that wonderful, ass-kicking, jet noise rocked the area. My lovely redheaded wife was not aware of the sneak attack until the noise hit. Quick reacting, body slam into the mud. I thought it was funny, anyway. Best little airshow in the West. A small country fair compared to Miramar later in the year.

Our a/c would be in holding while they took off, then go back in holding when they came back. A friend of mine was a pilot with them and he had the 2-seater waiting to take off and in the back is a guy with a beard. I can't see his face with the helmet but my friend calls taking Dan up for a spin or something like that. Then it hit me, Dan Fouts. Bet he loved it!

The Rhino has had a long standing problem with on board oxygenation and cabin pressure; even pilots who are fully kitted up in the fleet have reported hypoxia disorientation and intense headaches, as well as the Geasles - tiny blood vessels popping on arms, neck and chest that look like a rash .I hope it isn't so, but it could be that this is why he has to retire early. I'm sure his maintainers will get on top of whatever the problem is for him.

@@lawminx6213 The maintainers are undoubtedly the best in the whole Fleet! If anyone can get those Geasles remedied, it's the Vlue Angel Maintainers.
There is something to be said for the older machines. Sometimes us old guys just like them. For example I would much rather work on my old '74 F-150 than my girlfriend's Corolla. There just isn't much room under that Corolla hood.

Out of necessity; the pilots numbered jet may have teething problems and needs to be attended to by its maintainers, so they will take the jets most reliable on that day.
