Sorry Matt I have a 2021 Mini Cooper S and it is absolutely amazing. You are a little bit off on this subject this is not just about the looks but it is the performance that stands out the most. Great show.
That instability when braking hard caught me by surprise as well on the F56 3-door Cooper S! It feels like you are braking on wet road, very scary - and I believe it is simply due to no weight being in the back. The car would probably drive better and brake more stable with 4 bags of cement in the boot. Took me a lot of time on the track to regain confidence in the car - you just need to believe that the tires do really have traction in corners, and the braking instability isn’t a sign you are driving on slippery road or worn tires.
I own a 2014 cooper s and when it is just me in the car it is scary to absoulety send it on the country roads with the heavy breaking; however, a good amount of shopping with some heavy items from the garden center in the back, and immediately, the car feels so so much better. Almost as if it needs some ballast adding to the rear to make it stickier, but I imagine that'd have impacted emmsions standards and road tax etc etc in the EU.
@Teamgeist The difference is only the slightly more projecting line/shape on the corner of the back bumper, and in objective, ie real measured terms, it's marginal. Against that the extra rear doors (with electric windows! ... only fixed windows on the 3-door) and the extra boot space is a huge practicality improvement on a car which is very impractical in 3-door form.
The facelift does it no favours that’s for sure. I owned a pre-facelift Cooper 3 door for nearly 3 years and I loved it. A real characterful car. @@k2singh877the interior is shocking, the 2019 model doesn’t come standsrd with either carplay or navigation. An A class same year has a much nicer interior
@@oliversears9867 I'm not talking about features but interior quality. In my personal opinion A class interior is more futuristic but mini has better-built quality. A class has wobbling panels. I mean you may like modern interior but mini interior is different, not bad. Secondly Mini is a small size hot hatch. A class is way bigger than Mini, Not a fair comparison and even the companies don't treat them as rivals. A-class rivals are BMW 2 series and Audi A3. And A-45 is way powerful and more than twice as expensive as a Mini. While Mini rivals are Golf GTI or Ford Focus RS or i20N, But basically Mini has no rivals as its in it's own category. The design(3 door) The luxury interior and then the performance which is not the best when it come to handling or power delivery but still amazing, makes it special.
I love the new BMW mini’s, most satisfying of all for me are the new circular day time lights which turn in to the direction indicator. I think they are very satisfying
The question we all ask ourselves, how many times did Mat have to film the scene where he filled the back cup holder with water? You can clearly see that it is wet around the outside (;
As an owner of a 2015 five door hatch I need to let everyone know that with the right performance, tire, brake and exhaust upgrades, it’s quite a competent car for spirited mountain drives, and long freeway trips. I replaced a large V-8 sedan with this car and I am still in love. So much I have two other MINIs. The 2022 facelift is a disgrace. Even stock, these cars perform much better than the reviewer believes. Motor on!
I have just bought a new mini cooper latest edition, July 2021. It suffers from road and tyre noise - changing the tyres made no difference. My 2013 mini is far quieter. My wife and I found the noise so intolerable that we have sold it back to the main dealer after just a few weeks, replacing it with a 10-month old pre-facelift one which is much quieter.
The Mini became maxi during the last years. In the beginning it was a perfect city car and it was easy to find parking places. But now you have to pass many parking places beside the road because they are too small. Sad!
Y’all really don’t like change. Car manufacturers are going with the trend, crossovers and suvs seem the be the thing right now and manufacturers are trying to keep up with the changes.
Thanks for another great review Matt. The first generation BMW/Mini was true to the original and its Retro gimmick worked. The current batch are bloated, over styled and over-priced. Retro only goes so far against the superior competitors in the marketplace.
They're great fun and you'll enjoy it on the country lanes. But i have to admit, i have had exactly the same problem under heavy braking, Absolute death trap, the rear goes so light instantly.
It’s probably the RFT with handling and driving. Had them on my BMW and replaced fronts for Michelin’s PS4 and it’s massive difference. Much better, comfier and quieter
@@spennell98 that clubman is a rocket hey! The last JCW I had was a 2009 155kW back in 2010, so really excited for this. One of the more annoying reviews I’ve seen here… a lot of those things Matt moans about are either inconsequential or easily fixed. The arm rest actually fixed itself by staying in the middle where it’s supposed to be and not folded down like Matt had it. Once there, the parking brake handle is easily accessible. Do I like it? Yes. Especially since here in the US we don’t have as many choices for hatchbacks as you do in UK. And the Ford Fiesta and Focus models here are garbage. So that leaves us with this Mini, Golf GTI/R, and… Civic R, if we’re gonna push the definition of hatchback.
We don't have much of a selection of cars in this class in the US. Admittedly, we did not look at the cars that might be considered competitors. We are happy with our new MINI: the design, the added standard features, the build quality and the driving experience.
Would love to see a video on a new Fait Abarth 595 , as it’s getting quite old now it would be interesting to see how it stacks up against new cars. Love the vids
I’ve got a 2013 GP as a daily, and I was thinking of getting a new Mini to replace it. The 2022 facelift is hideous, but it’s too late to custom order a 2021. Genuinely annoyed!
i've got a 2020 version and i quite disagree with this review, on the handling for instance mine it's on rails, probably big difference is the JCW package i have (on a standard Cooper) on 17'', etc. and haven't tested a million cars recently but i am very happy with, especially when switching on SPORTS mode where everything is more stiff. One point i agree with is that the tyres can get noisy, but that depends on the pressure, if you use the insanely high recommended pressures of 2.8 - 2.5 or even 3.0 bar they will be quite noisy, just use something lower and it's much better. Plus it also depends what tyre brand you use. Stock ones can be noisy indeed. just my 2 cents.
@@saleh-dt3qj no they shouldn’t, they’re still typically smaller than their rivals in te same class. Times haves moved on, no manufacturers make cars as small as they used to.

11:47 let's not pretend we didn't hear that voice crack Matt!
Damn, that was a supersonic voice crack, it broke the sound barrier
o-WAAA
All sorts of OCD and anxiety kicked in when Matt poured the water into the cup holder 😟
Who cares its shitty plastic
Hy
Weird

A cooper is a cooper I love them all.....even the convertibles they have surprisingly great gear ratios
That engine noise seems addictive not irritating!
I’ve got the pre facelift version of this and seeing the new one I’m very glad 😂
Would love if you do a review of the new Mini Countryman. This is the one car I would love to get :)
Me too. Hoping to win the lottery to be able to afford one! 🤦♀️
That A pillar is HUGE!
It looks like a spare car!
That handbrake faff is dangerous too.
Plus the dangerous brakes.
I love the new BMW mini’s, most satisfying of all for me are the new circular day time lights which turn in to the direction indicator. I think they are very satisfying
I hope N'golo Kante sees this review 😄. Good lad he is.
That cup (water) holder on the back looks like it was made as a bowl for a dog 😂😂
The question we all ask ourselves, how many times did Mat have to film the scene where he filled the back cup holder with water? You can clearly see that it is wet around the outside (;
Matt's aim was a little off wasn't it. He's never using the toilets at my house!
Save the manuals! Glad to see they are still offering it with one.
Manuals are dead and slow
As an owner of a 2015 five door hatch I need to let everyone know that with the right performance, tire, brake and exhaust upgrades, it’s quite a competent car for spirited mountain drives, and long freeway trips. I replaced a large V-8 sedan with this car and I am still in love. So much I have two other MINIs. The 2022 facelift is a disgrace. Even stock, these cars perform much better than the reviewer believes. Motor on!
The design mirrors that of all cars.
1. Make it bigger
2. Add plastic cladding (like 1080s cheap cars)
3. Stick screens and lights everywhere
5:26 for a second i thought mat was wearing a red thong 😂😂😂
I went back to double check. Not saying he wasn't, just that it wasn't on show!
Matt and Carwow are the bests in their businesses
Hi I’m from Germany and I have a Mini Cooper S and I love it 🤗
What a horribly negative review. Absolutely love my new Mini ❤️
yeah, as a mini owner i felt he did it on purpuse just to push his other reviews hehe. certainly has its faults but no need to go that way.
It's a review. Love your car all you want
Thanks for another great review Matt. The first generation BMW/Mini was true to the original and its Retro gimmick worked. The current batch are bloated, over styled and over-priced. Retro only goes so far against the superior competitors in the marketplace.
@Concrete Head exactly the new one are built by bmw and has the B engine
BUt... HoW Did hE RemoVe thE WaTeR FrOm tHe cUp HOLDER ?!
He got a straw and sucked it out
Drive it
Vacuum it
That’s the trainee’s job 😜
It might have leaked through 😆
They're great fun and you'll enjoy it on the country lanes. But i have to admit, i have had exactly the same problem under heavy braking, Absolute death trap, the rear goes so light instantly.
Well...... Learn to drive properly 🤪
Thank you carwow for reviewing after I asked for sooo long. Next one the JCW? 😄😄
It’s probably the RFT with handling and driving. Had them on my BMW and replaced fronts for Michelin’s PS4 and it’s massive difference. Much better, comfier and quieter
Woohoo!!! My 2021 JCW arrives early next week!!!!
I’m sorry
You’ll love it. I have a 2020 JCW Clubman and it’s a 300hp rocket. Blast to drive.
@@spennell98 that clubman is a rocket hey! The last JCW I had was a 2009 155kW back in 2010, so really excited for this. I do wish it had the same exhaust note as the outgoing model if I’m honest but it’s hardly a deal breaker. I’m super tempted to go for a JB4 with software to push it closer to 300hp tho 😂
@@ReTrospectiveVids ya stupid regulations have really tuned out fun exhaust pops and bangs! Lol My Clubman has 301 HP or in the UK it’s 306 BHP. It’s wicked fun.
@@spennell98 currently have a 2.0TFSI 162kW Tiguan as the ‘family’ car but really tempted to sacrifice a bit of boot space (got a Thule roofbox) for the same engine as your clubman, but the Countryman 🤩
The front of the mini looks like this face -
D8
😦
thanks, now I can't unsee it
@@Imnotjoe2020 sorry my guy 😂🤣😭🤦♂️
About time you review a cooper s 👍👍
there is only one Matt Watson. what a legend
Does anyone from Australia 🇦🇺 watch this show? My best car review show in the world.
Only every video👍
I do!
months later:
VW Polo GTI 2021 review - better than a MINI Cooper S?
and the answer will be yes!
@@joaopedrofreitas1373 it will be better and faster but it won’t look as good. Love the looks of this generation mini
Nothing like my R56 Cooper S. Now that’s the real modern classic.
We don't have much of a selection of cars in this class in the US. Admittedly, we did not look at the cars that might be considered competitors. We are happy with our new MINI: the design, the added standard features, the build quality and the driving experience.
Do the "pop out banners" never appear for anyone else? Seems to only be on this channel for me 0_o
i it's think because we're too early 😂
They don't work on mobile I think.
All Matt's reviews are positive. I can still feel his loathing for this car.
“It’s definitely a love it or loathe it kind of car.”
Personally, I don’t mind it.
Would love to see a video on a new Fait Abarth 595 , as it’s getting quite old now it would be interesting to see how it stacks up against new cars. Love the vids
From last couple of weeks i was thinking that why Matt never reviewed mini and here we are😃
I’ve got a 2013 GP as a daily, and I was thinking of getting a new Mini to replace it. The 2022 facelift is hideous, but it’s too late to custom order a 2021. Genuinely annoyed!
Minis are upping there game, however I’d still prefer the polo GTI 😎
Never been this early to a carwow video!
I have you peasant
The design is dope😤
i've got a 2020 version and i quite disagree with this review, on the handling for instance mine it's on rails, probably big difference is the JCW package i have (on a standard Cooper) on 17'', etc. and haven't tested a million cars recently but i am very happy with, especially when switching on SPORTS mode where everything is more stiff.
I actually like the styling more and more. And especially the 5-door Version because it looks more grown up. Greets from Bavaria
I like the 3-door hatch more, the most practical of the “extended” mini has to be the Clubman
They're no longer as *mini* as they used to be.
Neither is any car as small as they used to be. mini is brand now, it doesn’t reflect the size of car
ugly car
They should rename it to mega or maxi
@@saleh-dt3qj no they shouldn’t, they’re still typically smaller than their rivals in te same class. Times haves moved on, no manufacturers make cars as small as they used to.
@@soulz2422 it's not!
Matt’s overtly negative attitude towards MINI is hilarious! I think I heard one or two positives though. Lol 😂
It was quite odd hey 🤷♂️
@@RR-ht9db haha he referred to the Clubman JCW (300 HP version) as not very manly in one of his drag races. Just not a MINI fan apparently.
@@spennell98 He would’ve lost his mind if any other car with 178hp did 0-60 in 6.2. But he seemed unfazed. There’s definitely some sort of negative bias here.
Always wanted to get one of those. And boom a new video hehe, perfect!
