Thank you for showing us your special scythe Teri and your demo! Nothing like going back to the old ways! The friendship between your 2 pooches is so endearing to see! 🌀🌟
You are an amazing woman Terri, always trying new things. I gave away a beautiful scythe when I cleaned out my moms property after she passed. Now I wish I had of kept it incase any future great grandkids could use it. I love that your doggies are included in your videos, they are both sweet fur babies. What a gorgeous day by you. Nice to know the land you live on was part of your families heritage. Hugs.
I can remember spending summers up in Lake Michigan with my great grandparents and the fun we had scything. I also think with the price of things going up and up more folks will go back to the 'simple life'. Thank you for your inspiring videos.
Scything sounds much more poetic than "weed whacking," which is what my people called it. Lol. I've used a tool much like yours in my younger days and I have my dad's hillside scythe, which is huge. Thank you for the lovely reminisce. ❤️
Love this!! Will be doing this but not at my home at my friend’s home. After 12 years of living here and paying rent on time every time, my landlord has decided to sell the house. My heart is broken. Trying to stay positive but there are so many unknowns😞 My friend has given me permission to garden at his home so that is a positive!! Thank you Terri for this teaching video. Blessings🌼🌼🌼
I love my hay scythe. I coppice my Ash trees and keep an eye out for new snath for the scythe as to buy the snath is expensive. I keep the handles and attach them to new ash snath, all be it a little quirky but gets the job done.! Zen it is! 😌
Hi Terri, Beannachtaí Terri a chara. You brought back some happy memories. In the early 1970s, Anne and I spent three days of our honeymoon in an Anglican monastery. (very Zen). One of the bretheren taught us how to use the scythe and sickle. He was very careful to be sure we were as safe as possible, telling us that there used be a lot of serious accidents with them. We mowed a small meadow and banking. Anne was smiling as we watched this video, saying how much she enjoyed working in the sunshine and on the land. It was so nice to be relating to the past as we worked. After that, we started to learn a lot of old techniques, (crafts really) and still use many of them. Next morning, my stomach, back, shoulders, and arms ached. I hope you were not too sore the following day.
What a lovely memory for you and Anne! The only bit that was sore was the old L4 area but everywhere else was ok. It is great to learn old techniques and crafts. xx
Fantastic idea! !! You will soon be a teenager again with the exercise! !! The world are trying to get more problems to us...will be our best version with using this ""simple things ""and living in our simple lives. ..well done! ! Big hugs dearest Terri! 😍😍😍
It certainly brings back memories to all of us,how it was in old time (not that far ago mind) and that sense that what you do-you are doing right.Well done and thank you for lovely video.❤️👍
Glad you liked it and you are right, it wasn't that long ago. My brother and his wife both use a scythe and I presume other people do too as they sell the metal ones in the local hardware shop. xx
I found this video so uplifting...it's been another horrible week of senseless violence. I'm delighted to hear of Seed Savers Ireland, and the workshop they did. Keeping this sort of knowledge alive is vitally important to the future, my thanks to you for promoting this skill, and all it's benefits.
Hi,Terri.....................well done..................i am back at home, had spent wonderful days in Donegal............Blessings and Greetings from Daggy,Kiel,Germany☘☘☘
What a wonderful video to wake up to on a Sunday morning! So many memories for me in watching you and your new scythe. Also.... I think those may be two of the most fortunate dogs on the planet. 🥰
I loved this video Terri. I'm going to pass this along to my son who is looking to buy some acreage and wants lots of chickens! Not to eat but for the eggs lol. He is also looking for ways to become self sufficient. A win win on both accounts. Thanks for sharing all your fantastic ideas. Looking forward to the next video! 💚
Hello there terri, oh thats real proper, just love the sythe and hand made all natural, its worked wonderful on your grass with all the grasses and flowers. Your chickens are going to just love the hay leter on,,mmmm,it will be smelling beautiful. Very relaxing, thankyou, for your lovely video and hard work, hello to the dear doggies too.and to all your chickens, thankyou,s take good care xxfrom Heather and my chickens, going to show my older sister she will love this video, xxthankyou, xxboth getting older now,sis is 66,and me 62.
Terri much admiration for your first use of the scythe, what a peaceful garden time, I suppose the important message is do a little each time. Those muscles need time to adjust. The video is beautiful, with the flowers, you and scythe and those dogs frolicking about, plus the music. What a pleasure to watch. Thank you both. I’m back in Devon for the summer, you brought back a recent memory Id forgotten about, we bought a scythe to cut long grass in a small lane on land we own, it was so overgrown with weeds etc, what fun but oh was my tummy sore that night. I agree to hear the birds whilst working was bliss.
Thank you for inspiring us to use tools wich are suitable for wellbeing of humans and all the inhabitants with whom we share this planet earth. Step by step we can make the difference.
Thank you . My heart calms and i feel renewed after sharing this marvelous film. Learned something new. Wish i was there. 100 million blessing to all of you🐕🥰💖💞💓💛💥
A very uplifting video thanks. Like you, as a child, I remember my great uncle scything a huge field on his croft in Donegal and us later helping to make haystacks. This video brought back many happy memories of that. Go raibh maith agut.
Thank you Terry , Lol and lovely dogs. That was such a beautiful film to watch, a gorgeous sunny day loved the wild roses, daisies and meadow flowers. I learned a lot about scything love that its Mother nature friendly (most old ways seem to be).I remember my Dad explaining when we where young how he had helped his uncles scythe meadow hay in rural England (Drayton Parslow) the family had farmed there for centuries. Many Thanks from Canadian prairies xo
I have seen a man use a scythe in his field and have all the cutting done in the same amount of time it took me to wash the dishes. It's amazing how quick it can be with some practice! We use a good old push mower. We get at least one person a year walking by stopping and asking about it. It's quieter, much more peaceful and I feel more in control using such a thing. Thanks for another great upload!
Hi Terri. WOW. The ancients definitely knew what they were doing. That's very effective and surprisingly faster than I imagined it would be. I love the fact it keeps the grass down but doesn't strip Mother Earth bare. If your good to momma, momma's good to you"
What a great timing, I'm just taking a short break from homework and so fun to see your new "workout" and the great success and beautiful memories and experiences it evoked. It's a 3 day holiday US and a big thunderstorm on the way ⚡️⛈️⚡️.
I applaud you Terri. 👏👏You are amazing. As I said before, is there anything you can’t do? You make it look so easy. So natural, easy, enjoyable, healthy. That should be thought in schools, the new curriculum, along with other how to look after ourselves and the beautiful nature around us. Oh, no……health and safety regulations! 🤦♀️. Well done you Terri! ❤️
Oana - I am sure you could teach me a number of things! And the scything was easy and enjoyable. I agree that they should definitely teach kids more life skills and how to look after the world around us. Hope you and family are well. xx💚💖
Yet an other enthusiastic scythe apostle on TH-cam ! Indeed the best tool to manage the lush vegetation around the spot where you live. 10:04 That's right that's the truth... hooray !
When growing up I remember watching my Dad use his Scythe & thinking he must be the most skilled user of anyone. (not that I saw anyone else use one) He would sway back and forth in the most rhythmic motion, never a hiccup. I so wanted to ask him if I could give it a try but I knew he would say no. He most likely thought it could be a danger to me but also he was a bit of an impatient person so I didn't want to get scolded. It's a good memory anyway. 🙂
I’m wondering now if my strimmer is the reason my left upper arm is constantly aching and back of the neck so sore, I use it for an hour or so each week in general and it hangs over my shoulder as I use it .... never thought about that before, I also want to say Teri, I’ve made your soap recently and it is SO luxurious and soft, I gave some to my friend and she contacted me to say how wonderful it is, thanks for the tutorial on that and the wonderful laundry liquid which I only use now , just wonderful xx
It could be your strimmer. My shoulder and back certainly feel the weight of mine. Delighted to hear about your DIY and how well it all turned out for you xx
I've just come from holidays in Transylvania and the Scythe is the most common way to cut hay in certain regions. It needs no fuel,it needs no mechanical skill and can actually be mastered in a couple of hours. It's an honest, simple and ecologically sound tool
You are absolutely right - and that was how it was here once. I remember writing an essay at school and my teacher questioning that scythes were still used.😂 Of course, that was a long time ago xx
I must invest in one of these! We bought a push mower to avoid petrol but I'm too petite to get a good push on it, my partner has to do it. This would be ideal!
Wonderful to see a new convert to the scythe. I am 77 this year and still work with the scythe every year. Now teaching my grandsons how to work the meadows. Cheers and blessings from Canada
Loved the video ,reminded me of my childhood when the orchard and the paddocks were scythed .So pleased the skill is still being taught .............Sorry about the lack of response to youe e mail will explain why in my reply xx
Terri, ‘across the pond’ in the US, you have a kindred spirit: Jim Kovaleski. He has a TH-cam video of scything . He made his own low-tech, but very functional small hay bailer to process the dried scythed plant pieces. I think at some point there is a drone image from up high of the field he was scything. Watching you both evokes that meditative rhythm. The design of the scythe is genius!
Terri, I always look forward to your new videos, as you said, it takes me back to my childhood, watching the men and boys out working the fields while I ran around barefoot in the tall grass of the fields. ❤
I too enjoy scything and the Austrian handle is best for me too. The crooked version is what's found more often in the USA, but it doesn't feel as comfortable. I just need to pace myself. I don't do it often enough to be accustomed to the constant twisting. Another great video, thank you!
Thank you for learning and sharing! I’ve been considering a scythe for a while but bought a push reel mower instead for a small flat space. There is something really satisfying about it especially when you are trying to sort things out in your head. I think a scythe would be great for the rest of the property but I am so unfamiliar. Thank you again for sharing! I always love your videos and hope you have a great week!
I hope the doggies were in before you started - might want to mention that for ppl who might not think about it. I have a scythe - always make sure no pets are out before.
Hello Terry, I love how the Universe works!! I am a permaculture designer in San Diego, CA and love following your channel. On Saturday, I was on a farm speaking about using a Scyth as opposed to a weedwhacker, what you call a scrimm (not sure of the spelling. Would you be able to send me the name of the company where you got yours? I have been trying to find on and know that they need to come in from Switzerland. Thank you so much and have a blessed day
Hi Miss Klibs, our weedwhackers are called strimmers - we strim the grass. As for the scythe, it is an Austrian Fux, so you could google that company. I bought mine from an Irish gardening company called Fruithill Farm www.fruithillfarm.com/tools/scythes-sickles-and-accessories.html You could always contact them and see if they can put you in touch. Blessings xx
Where did you get the scythe from Terri? Mine is all metal with a grass blade so really too heavy and too big for my garden. Yours looks like the perfect size to work around my orchard.
I got mine from a company in Irelandwww.fruithillfarm.com/tools/scythes-sickles-and-accessories.html and you can get them from Chris whose details are in the box below the film. xx
Michaelangelo just used to chip away at the stuff that wasn't David to reveal the sculpture that was already there. I'm sure that space is right there for you already.
Fantastic Terri... I raced outside after seeing this video as I remembered a scythe found in the hard rubbish years ago, never used! I have a wet stone also which a neighbour gave me years ago..I have nowhere on my land to use this but on the nature strip... outside where there is overgrown vegetation...yes! Thank you for this lesson in use...excited...sharing actions skills across the water... feel blessed - thank you.
That’s a great demonstration. A nicely produced video too. I’m attending the scything course with Seed Savers in Clare next week and looking forward to it.
Wow, clever you! What a wonderful way to spend the day. I always feel amazing after a good day doing physical work like that. I too get lost in my own space, and time just whizzes by. Terri, i was wondering after seeing your lovely dogs having a great day out in the field and water, have you done a video on pet herbals for ticks/fleas/worms etc? I want to keep my pup on all naturals,so looking for good ideas. Thankyou , have a great week. xx
I am not really knowledgeable about herbs for pets but can recommend Tansy for fleas and ticks. Put the plant cuttings in their bed or around their collar or in a bandana for dogs. Wormwood in very small doses for short time for worms and have a look at the books by Juliette de Bairacli Levy for herbal remedies for animals. x
Why didn't I do it sooner?? I actually did buy a scythe about 10 years ago but it wasn't an Austrian one and I could not get the hang of it. Now I love it!
Hi Terri, thanks again, I checked out the Fruithill Farm supplier and the process of peening the blade to keep it sharp long term looks a bit daunting to learn without an instructor was this covered in the workshop. I love that you have the confidence to learn and then pass on what you have learned.
Hi Dilis, my teacher's details are in the box under the film. I did not buy a peening jig as it was quite expensive and my teacher said it was not vital to have and wouldn't be needed until I had scythed for about thirty hours. I won't need one until next year or the year after. Hope that helps xx
Peening is basically cold forging the scythe blade. I use a peening hammer on a piece of wood to thin out the blade. Then sharpen as usual. No need to spend young fortunes on gizmos - unless you intend to scythe acres of ground😊
So interesting! Thank you for the beautiful video. I have no garden. But I love them to relax with a good cup of herbal tea. I like that you switched to scything and are so careful with the nature.
That was absolutely fascinating Terri. I am interested to know, when you buy a scythe are they bespoke to get the hand/shoulder measurements right for you personally, or are they sold according to someone's height? It is just what I need for my wild garden which this month seems like an impenetrable forest!
Hi Rozanna, the Austrian Scythe is kind of bespoke as the handles are adjustable. There are a number of holes that run up the snathe. You set the handles in the space suitable for your height and arm length which means the scythe is much easier to use and works more efficiently. xx
Another great show. We have the long blades it. She uses as a decoration. I've watched your videos before. Every time it looks like you are slender. I believe it's the herbs, vegetables and The natural medicines that you take. Still looking for your books and Barnes & Noble.Maybe I'll have to go online at the amazon. I've bless you and your family.God bless you and your family.God bless you america and the world. God bless the children and keep them safe from harm.❤👍🙏🇺🇲😉🌹
Greetings from York. A nice video, you looked as if you were having fun. Especially when you were bouncing on the top, like reliving your childhood. When you stretched your arms up, you, reminded me of a little girl. :-)
Thank you for the lovely video!! First of all, what an absolutely beautiful home you have, I was just making plans for a living roof that I'm going to build, and it's so amazing to see your home and that roof. And the scything! I am fascinated by scything, as I just hate the noise and pollution of modern equipment. A great demonstration, thank you! I wanted to ask; what time of the year do you recommend scything a meadow to increase biodiversity? Thank you again for the sharing of wisdom and the beautiful scenes 🙏🌷💗✨🌸
Thank you for watching K Loewe. So glad you enjoyed it. Traditionally the hay was cut mid to late summer, as I remember as a child we were helping with the hay stacks in August. Grass can be cut more than once though and each time the grass content will improve and there will be more flowers as the seeds fall. xx
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden What an idyllic scene of your childhood, I hope one day to give it to my own children! :) And thank you so much for your response!! It helps so much !

You are right Annie, it is very nice to be on family land. And it was a gorgeous day. Big hugs to you and sorry about your scythe. xx
You certainly paid attention to your teacher! The land looks better when scythed rather than attacked by machinery. It’s beautiful to watch.
He was a good teacher - made everything seem simple and then it was. Just practice needed now. xx

Absolutely! Much better for all of those reasons. xx

Loved the video ,reminded me of my childhood when the orchard and the paddocks were scythed .So pleased the skill is still being taught .............Sorry about the lack of response to youe e mail will explain why in my reply xx
Take your time Mary, there is no panic xxx
Terri, ‘across the pond’ in the US, you have a kindred spirit: Jim Kovaleski. He has a TH-cam video of scything . He made his own low-tech, but very functional small hay bailer to process the dried scythed plant pieces. I think at some point there is a drone image from up high of the field he was scything. Watching you both evokes that meditative rhythm. The design of the scythe is genius!
Found the video: at the 14:15 minute mark, there is a beautiful aerial view of of the rows of cut vegetation th-cam.com/video/MNAR8EZd1PA/w-d-xo.html
Found the video on the hay baler Jim made: th-cam.com/video/vrzcZrYh6-g/w-d-xo.html
Thank you Diane, I will check him out for sure. I am all in to scything videos now. xx
I have been wanting one. After watching this it goes to the got to have list. Awesome video!
It had been on my list and then I jumped in and got it - so glad I did. xx
I have my mother in law’s hand scythe,I must give it a try - I really like yours!
Do - give it a whirl. Sharpen it up first! xx
Wonderful! Thank you for sharing. I now have scythe goals.
Ha ha - that's great! xx
The Austrian scythe is much easier to use I think as it fits the body better. xx
💪💃🏼☀️❤️
Love the video!! Thank U 😊
Glad you liked it!! xx
So interesting. Thank you.
You're welcome Robin! xx
Thank you so much. I have a push mower that I bought some years ago but our land is not flat anywhere so it doesn't push too well. Enjoy your week. xx
Well done you!!! Always hated strimmers.....they do soooooo much damage....
Thanks Triona - definitely a good move for me. xx
5:42 crescent moon is correct. A half moon is a straight line :)
I hope the doggies were in before you started - might want to mention that for ppl who might not think about it.
I have a scythe - always make sure no pets are out before.
Wow, I am impressed, well done and thank you so much for sharing, just what you need with your land, and amazing for your health too.
Very satisfying
Definitely! xx
Just what I needed :) thank you! You have a lovely herb garden
Thanks! xx
It was so wonderful to hear nature as you were working there. Your sweet dogs are lovely. Thank you for sharing a tool that is not seen now days. ❤️
You are welcome Gena - one of the benefits of the scythe, you can still hear the birds and the breeze! xx
Just beautiful. I loved everything about this video. Thank you for sharing. ❤
So glad you liked it John. Thank you for watching!
love the video! thank you 🥰
You're welcome! xx
❤😉❤🌟❤😉❤
Much Love To you and yours!
❤
Many happy returns!
Greetings from Valencia Ca,,Love your video and your awesome land..Nice puppies to,I so hope to garden again one day...
Thanks for watching! x
Where did you get the scythe from Terri? Mine is all metal with a grass blade so really too heavy and too big for my garden. Yours looks like the perfect size to work around my orchard.
I got mine from a company in Irelandwww.fruithillfarm.com/tools/scythes-sickles-and-accessories.html and you can get them from Chris whose details are in the box below the film. xx
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden thank you Terri.
So very lovely. I want to buy a scythe as soon as possible. 🌾
Do and give it a try! xx
👍 Wonderful! I'll bet Jazz & Broc were hunting frogs to play with in the pond.
They were indeed! Jazz is also used to seeing little fish in the seaside pools so probably thought she might see some here too. xx
I just adore this! I am needing to learn this. I hope I have a place to use one soon. Good thoughts please!💚💐🌱
Keeping fingers crossed for you! xx
Michaelangelo just used to chip away at the stuff that wasn't David to reveal the sculpture that was already there. I'm sure that space is right there for you already.
Brilliant Terri xxx
Fantastic Terri... I raced outside after seeing this video as I remembered a scythe found in the hard rubbish years ago, never used! I have a wet stone also which a neighbour gave me years ago..I have nowhere on my land to use this but on the nature strip... outside where there is overgrown vegetation...yes! Thank you for this lesson in use...excited...sharing actions skills across the water... feel blessed - thank you.
Wonderful - you get to use it after all this time. xx
That’s a great demonstration. A nicely produced video too.
I’m attending the scything course with Seed Savers in Clare next week and looking forward to it.
Thanks Seán. I hope you enjoy the course as much as I did. x
Wormwood in very small doses for short time for worms and have a look at the books by Juliette de Bairacli Levy for herbal remedies for animals. x
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Terri thankyou so much! I will research all of those. Im very grateful xx
Cool!!
I think I need a bush blade! Managed to get enough hay last year but it was hard going with the longer blade with the sorrel etc! Thank you.
I got the bush blade because we have no flat ground really, and this gets me into the small spaces between raised beds as well. x
thank you so much for this. I thought I'd better check out women scything before I book myself onto a course. Will definitely do so now.
Great! Go for it! xx
I sycthe too Terri, can't get on with the strimmer at all. It is a very meditative process with the repetitive action.
I love this! Thank you for demonstrating.
You're welcome Forest Dweller! x
So interesting! Thank you for the beautiful video. I have no garden. But I love them to relax with a good cup of herbal tea.
I like that you switched to scything and are so careful with the nature.
Thank you Lena - hope you get a garden one day so you can grow your herbal tea💚xx
You set the handles in the space suitable for your height and arm length which means the scythe is much easier to use and works more efficiently. xx
looks like so much fun!
IT was! I have much more to do yet. Just getting used to it.
Hi Garrett, my books are only available from my website www.danusirishherbgarden.com. You won't find them anywhere else. Blessings to you and yours xx
Wonderful 🌻 Thank you Terri 🌻🌻🌻
You are welcome Abby. xx
Greetings from York. A nice video, you looked as if you were having fun. Especially when you were bouncing on the top, like reliving your childhood. When you stretched your arms up, you, reminded me of a little girl. :-)
I was having fun Gordon!😀 I felt like a little girl too. xx Enjoy your hols!
It looks like fun. I have wanted one for some time...perhaps this spring!
It is fun and easier and fulfilling and satisfying. Go try in Spring xx
Great Video. I just got old Scythe and I'm going to sharpen it and use it. Your video is Helpful. Thank You!!!
💚
Fantastic vid.
Thanks Mary!
Thank you just brought a scythe so love this . Thank you 🙏
Wonderful! Enjoy your scything! xx
