For the love of all that is holy, go read the manga. It solves just about every issue you have. It has a proper ending, everything gets explained, it gets much darker, and those conveniences have a proper explanations that fit into the wider plot.
While I understand where you're coming from, it is worth noting that it is an *Anime* review, not a Series review. With this in mind, reviews would most likely include the plot holes that are yet to be answered in the anime due to not being adapted yet.

It doesn't help that most reviewers haven't read the source material and thus give a recommendation based on an adaptation that may or may not accurately represent the story.
I don't really have a problem with how convenient the school is for one simple reason, it was mentioned. The girls actually do discuss how the schools resources are far too convenient to be a coincidence.
I agree that it is convinient, but in my opinnion it's also really intresting. The fact that some people knew about the posibility of a zombie outbreak before it happened raises questions about how the outbreak started. It also raised questions about why the people who knew about it failed to save hundreds of people.

There is one other major twist that comes about half-way through the anime. I think most people will be able to figure it out beforehand, especially given the nature of the first episode's twist, but when it hits it still feels like an emotional gut punch.
SPOILEERSSSS (but not for plucas1) Yeah, I thought she was a ghost from how much the other girls ignored her, but I didn't expect her to be another delusion. The way she dies is truly an emotional gut punch, I totally agree with you. Actually, this anime moved me several times.
Yeah, I was totally caught off guard, and when the special ED for that episode came along, I nearly flipped the table and actually shouted "Sure! Twist the effing knife why don't you?!" Between that and the final episode's briefly flirtation with delusion for a different character - when the ending had the Coop's wheels going the wrong way, I questioned if the ending as a whole might be another happy delusion.
I didn't expect that plot twist before it happened, but when it happened it all made sense. The foreshaddowing in the previous five episodes was really well done. Seeing a character you really like die in a story is obvious sad, but beeing told that that character didn't even exist for the previous five episodes was even more heartbreaking than that. Megu-nee (i mean Sakurai Sensei) is such a lovable character, and was such a great person for all the girls, especially Yuki. Which makes it even more heartbreaking.
That twist caught me completely off guard, it was incredible. I knew she had delusions but the show really got me with that one, having her be part of the series for so many episodes. After the revelation though it all clicked. It's honestly one of the best twists in the series, and it surprisingly managed to stay consistent with all of her parts in the previous episodes.
until this point i thought she had just a moe quirk and that the focus was simply more in the rest of the cast and did NOT see this twist coming. and she was my favorite character. :')
Pretty nice ending other than it have a time skip and the world still bad but its nice everyone is survivaling also that one shot chapter where everyone dies was brutal.
I went into School-Live totally blind, other than knowing that “there is a twist at the end of episode 1” plus it was one of the first anime I ever got into. So much nostalgia for me, so great. Glad you’re talking about it!!!
This is one of those anime’s where I’d say: “read the manga” The anime does the plot twists great and has its own content, but it actually explains as to why the school was so well prepared and it actually has conflicts in between them
Something I think you failed to talk about is this show's excellent use of perspective. Even if you know the twist going in, you gotta respect it for that. This show is definitely a 10/10 for me.
Regarding the realism, I found that part satisfactorily solved by the packet the girls find, and the questions about why it failed to be carried out properly. The manga also answers it a bit - the guy who was supposed to be responsible for enacting some/all of the emergency plans is discovered in the basement, having hung himself.
True that. Knowing about a shelter or an evacuation route and using it efficiently in the life threatening situation are two different things. I'm so glad that the principal made the right call.
My favorite anime, watching this anime changed my view on how characters are developed in anime. I love each of the characters and what the story builds up too. Without a doubt deserves a 2nd second season
I guess I'm a weeb of culture and I can tell you, that box has some hints on it, but they are just as subtle as the opening episode, pretwist. I really appreciate the opening for this show as it changes, episode to episode, to match the plot points covered in the series.
I'm a huge fan of genre blending, especially cute and horror. It's always exciting to see how cute things turn for the worse or vice versa. I'm pretty sure I just fell in love with that feeling when the story pulls the rug out from under you. There's manga and it EXPLAINED every questionable thing in the anime Such as, how come principle didn't survive. Why are school is a bunker in the first place. How the zombie infection has it's origin. The thing that should've happened before they left the school. Or a fate of the girls Note that manga story will be a bit twisted from anime
Watched this show earlier this year. One of the more horrifying experiences, I've ever witnessed in anime. I didn't know it was possible. It's psychological subversion but layered, it just keeps striping away and piling it on, until the overall character premise is fully realised. I was left wondering what was and wasn't real anymore at points. I have never seen anything like it done before and I look forward to seeing more like it.. I hope someday that they serialise the rest of the manga because I hear that was pretty good too.
In that case I highly recommend Madoka Magica to you, if you've never seen it. It's 12 episodes and a sequel movie with exactly the sort of narrative subversion you're looking for. I remember that School Live came out when Madoka Magica was still fresh in people's memories and there were other shows trying to emulate what it did to varying levels of success, though none have managed to match it to the best of my knowledge.

fond memories of watching this series as it aired back in 2015 when no one was talking about it, i'm so happy to see it getting the love and praise it deserves!! such a fun show and i remember theorizing and piecing together the timeline week to week :) time to read the manga now!
I haven't read the manga, but I have heard it's good. So, basically, I'd be interested in School-Live getting the brotherhood treatment. I would watch it. And then also read the manga.
The manga’s high school arc is on par with the anime’s while being told differently, which makes it nice and unique. The second arc of the manga stumbles hard when it comes to the characters due to then introducing a huge new cast, but the final arc of the story returns to its roots with the focus being on the School Living Club. So yeah, pretty good overall
It's hard to go into this series completely blind when it's tagged as a horror series on a lot of sites, however I managed to get my friend and sister into it by just putting it on without giving them any context and the first episode landed perfectly. They were able to pick up on the hints of the apocalypse and how something wasn't quite right with Yuki throughout the episode right up to the final moments. I'm interested in the manga, because it does follow the girls after they leave.
The convenience is answered by the fact that the virus outbreak has happened before and was cured. The school had countermeasures in case another outbreak occurred.
Wait, I did read through the manga, so it's all a bit of a blur (since some key developments differ quite a bit from the adaptation), but didn't the anime also explain just why exactly this particular school just happened to be equipped for apocalypse survival?
I have wathed this series only a week ago! And I loved it as I have not loved anything for some time. It's just special. If you want to read the rest of the plot in the manga, start with chapter 31.
I watched it when it came out and no one was recommending it by screaming the twist of the first episode. It was one of the best twists I've seen in anime.
So a couple points to add on. This series has its intro change through the series. Please watch it every time to get the most from your experience. I don’t think the convenience of the school is a detriment as it lends to the mystery of what went wrong and why an apocalyptic event was expected. Granted the anime doesn’t go into that much. Finally, I’d argue if the idea of zombies/SoL doesn’t interest you, the mysteries & twists the series sets up might. Plus the MC’s psychology is very captivating to watch.
I followed the manga since 2014 a year before the anime came out, and was reading it by every release of the new chapter. I’ve been with this manga for so long, so when the last chapter came out I was like emotional that this long manga that I have followed was ending. It’s one of my favorite series

The emergency shelter being empty is actually very realistic. Given how easily the virus spreads, the tendency of people to split into factions, and just plain old incompetence and panic, it's actually quite plausible the shelter would be empty.

One thing I like about School-Live is the fact that it's not a story about how a zombie apocalypse changes society or how people loose trust in one another. Nor is it about body horror. Unlike most popular zombie stories it's about how people can keep up a good life when almost no one is around anymore. The main enemy in School-Live is most of the time not zombies or other people, the real enemy is sadness and hopelessness. And the way the girls deal with that in the story is by keeping up simple school activities. They are at times even willing to risk their own lives just to go on school trips, because having fun and beeing happy is so important to them. That's also why the moe genre and zombie genre works so well together in this exact instance, which should be impossible. Seeing the girls beeing happy and having fun is so heartwarming because you know about their harsh situation. There are many other things, I love about School-Live, but this is what makes the story truly beautifull. It is indeed one of my favorite anime of all time.
The "conveniences" are hinted that something really big is going on in its universe and poses the question "why was a school set up to survive a zombie apocalypse?" We're you aware that the anime is an ad for the manga? "Buy the books to find out!"

"this isn't a series that will make you curl up in a ball and die of sadness" maybe for you but when Torumaru died, I did cry pretty hard (probably because I've had a dog die before and it hit hard for me but nonetheless) and also the faces... the teacher doesn't look like most adults so I thought she was a student. i'm a very young looking adult so ppl like that do exist ofc but I was surprised that she was an adult also the school having a shelter and being a place made for surviving an apocalypse was a bit tacky, ngl

First, the zombie apocalypse is explained in episode 8 the result from a biological weapon, second the girls were planning to go to a university marked by megunee in episode 12

Honestly, I watched episode 1 that ending.. that shit made me cry like legit I feel really bad for Yuuki. She is definitely in the middle of a nervous breakdown and there is nothing anyone can do to help since all of the resources she would need to get that help just doesn't exist for them anymore.
I watched the video up to the spoiler warning, immediately watched the show, and came back in the shortest amount of time possible. Great recommendation.
I can't believe this review is recent lol. I just recently got my aunt into this series for Halloween time. We binged it in like a day and its enjoyment exceeds her lack of anime viewing experience, let alone tolerance for reading subs. :) Also, for me, knowing all the twists, watching all the subtle details (especially in audio) is extremely satisfying and the emotional parts still hit hard :'( That "beach" episode still sucks though. I always skip it up until the scene with Miki and Taroumaru and the later scenes with Tarou by himself. Like those are the only moments of merit that episode. Haven't watched the dub but what I've heard from them on TH-cam are.....hm. Yuki and Miki sound the same, and it's pretty grating on Yuki's enthusiasm and inconsistent with Miki. Kurumi is fine (not exceptional) and Yuri sounds the youngest despite being the oldest (in maturity.) Megu-nee is perfect though. Kinda hard to get the one adult in the moe group wrong though. If anyone has watched the entire dub, please let me know if the dub is worth buying the blurays for.
I loved School Live! I think I watched it because you recommended it somewhere before. Maybe. Still, i agree with most of what you said. Now, if it only ever got a Season 2..... I really need to get on with reading this manga (and a couple of others, to be fair).
I also see the series as a good analysis of the importance of a source of hope and happiness even in the worst possible situations, so that surviving becomes something truly desirable -- you have something to survive for. One might argue that Yuki was this for the group in the school -- and that the absence of a Yuki is what made Miki and her friend in the shopping center eventually split up. In the school they had something to survive for; in the deposit room in the shopping center, they didn't.

I binged Great Pretender and it was great! Best anime I have seen that covers the world. They go from US to France/ London, Singapore, China. It’s just solid and was something new and refreshing.
Super sad after 4 years there's still no legitimate news on season 2. I don't know how people feel about the anime vs the manga, but I always enjoyed both media's of story telling but as a visual learner, I've always been more captivated in anime and just wish I could get immersed into another anime story telling continuation on this series. It had me crying 2 times harder than when I originally read it. The cast felt so real. Every character was so deep and well written. Guess I'll just go re-read the entire manga for a 3rd time.
It's kind of sad that this series went under the radar when it was airing (as far as I remember) cause it was really good when I first watched it thinking it was just gonna be in a post apocalypses setting and not a Zombie one, but It is really amazing especially how it handled the plot twist, although I've only read some of the Manga I think the show does a better job of making use of its setting epically one it comes to the Greater Twist. Needs a Second Season for sure.
I read the spoiler free premise before watching, so the first episode floored me with the ending. There was always something OFF but all semed normal as such, and then suddenly she was standing in a broken classroom and the credits. WTF! I might have read zombie apocalypse at some point but I had totally forgotten that before i got to actually watching the show. I wonder if it was totally obvious to everyone else that their favorite teacher was no longer alive. For me that was a second WTF and also made me a bit teary eyed. Yes I am a man. Yes men can cry. I love this show, I have considered buying it. I always thought that the ending was an anime only ending and that the manga continued but was that actually all there was? That is really all that stopped me from actually getting it. Maybe I shall. ;-)
@@signaltome Yeah, Taroumaru is pretty much an anime only character, and why they ultimately leave the school is different. I recommend reading from the beginning, it shouldn't take too long.

I'm slowly buying the manga when i can find it but all of my manga-holding-stores have massive jumps on volumes, 1, 7, 12, so it's been kinda difficult lmao
I have to disagree that is was not well supported in the sotry, why the school was build like an emergency shelter. It was even build in the intend to be used as an emergency shelter. Megumi knew part of the truth and maybe a few of her coworker (teacher), too. The spreading of the infection started to fast and the teacher could not even escape their own staff room. Only the few girls that were working on the plants of the school roof and the teacher Megumi were able to survive the first strike of the undead. The manga concludes the story behind the outbreak, the roots of the bacterium, the reason it could spread and also the solution of the problem.
Anyone who wants the read the manga after watching the show I strongly Strongly recommend reading from the beginning. The anime changes many important things that are key to the manga's story.

fond memories of watching this series as it aired back in 2015 when no one was talking about it, i'm so happy to see it getting the love and praise it deserves!! such a fun show and i remember theorizing and piecing together the timeline week to week :) time to read the manga now!

So, basically, I'd be interested in School-Live getting the brotherhood treatment. I would watch it. And then also read the manga.
The manga’s high school arc is on par with the anime’s while being told differently, which makes it nice and unique. The second arc of the manga stumbles hard when it comes to the characters due to then introducing a huge new cast, but the final arc of the story returns to its roots with the focus being on the School Living Club. So yeah, pretty good overall
It's hard to go into this series completely blind when it's tagged as a horror series on a lot of sites, however I managed to get my friend and sister into it by just putting it on without giving them any context and the first episode landed perfectly. They were able to pick up on the hints of the apocalypse and how something wasn't quite right with Yuki throughout the episode right up to the final moments. I'm interested in the manga, because it does follow the girls after they leave.
The convenience is answered by the fact that the virus outbreak has happened before and was cured. The school had countermeasures in case another outbreak occurred.
Wait, I did read through the manga, so it's all a bit of a blur (since some key developments differ quite a bit from the adaptation), but didn't the anime also explain just why exactly this particular school just happened to be equipped for apocalypse survival?

the manga addresses every issue you have, it explains why the school is like that, it's a lot darker and it ends a lot better
I watched it when it came out and no one was recommending it by screaming the twist of the first episode. It was one of the best twists I've seen in anime.
I love this series, the first episode made me feel stuff I never felt before in an anime.

So a couple points to add on. This series has its intro change through the series. Please watch it every time to get the most from your experience. I don’t think the convenience of the school is a detriment as it lends to the mystery of what went wrong and why an apocalyptic event was expected. Granted the anime doesn’t go into that much. Finally, I’d argue if the idea of zombies/SoL doesn’t interest you, the mysteries & twists the series sets up might. Plus the MC’s psychology is very captivating to watch.
I followed the manga since 2014 a year before the anime came out, and was reading it by every release of the new chapter. I’ve been with this manga for so long, so when the last chapter came out I was like emotional that this long manga that I have followed was ending. It’s one of my favorite series

i watched school-live when it aired and i always think back on it fondly, i totally love this anime and it definitely still stands out to me after watching seasonal anime for several years.

I watched this show when it aired back a few years ago, knowing nothing about it. I had to rewatch the first episode twice to make sure that is how it actually ended.

I remember watching this show from the recommendations from a few and being explicitly told NOT to look at the description. I was not disappointed to say the least.
The emergency shelter being empty is actually very realistic. Given how easily the virus spreads, the tendency of people to split into factions, and just plain old incompetence and panic, it's actually quite plausible the shelter would be empty.

One thing I like about School-Live is the fact that it's not a story about how a zombie apocalypse changes society or how people loose trust in one another. Nor is it about body horror. Unlike most popular zombie stories it's about how people can keep up a good life when almost no one is around anymore.
The main enemy in School-Live is most of the time not zombies or other people, the real enemy is sadness and hopelessness. And the way the girls deal with that in the story is by keeping up simple school activities. They are at times even willing to risk their own lives just to go on school trips, because having fun and beeing happy is so important to them. That's also why the moe genre and zombie genre works so well together in this exact instance, which should be impossible. Seeing the girls beeing happy and having fun is so heartwarming because you know about their harsh situation.
There are many other things, I love about School-Live, but this is what makes the story truly beautifull. It is indeed one of my favorite anime of all time.

i watched this show blind a few years ago and i was BLOWN AWAY by the twist. i don't normally like zombie stories but i was really attached to the characters in this one. great show, worth your money to buy!
"this isn't a series that will make you curl up in a ball and die of sadness" maybe for you but when Torumaru died, I did cry pretty hard (probably because I've had a dog die before and it hit hard for me but nonetheless)
and also the faces... the teacher doesn't look like most adults so I thought she was a student. i'm a very young looking adult so ppl like that do exist ofc but I was surprised that she was an adult
also the school having a shelter and being a place made for surviving an apocalypse was a bit tacky, ngl

@@tylermustappa2982 You dont get it, season 2 is still airing, this already aired and got done with, meaning re:zero season 2 cant be reviewed till its airs all of its episodes and even than it wont be finished as that series has 11 arcs total to be made and we only got trough 1/3 of the story.

Bruh i recently finished the Manga and I love the Anime so much. I heard they might get a sequel but im not sure myself but still. I love both the anime and the manga. Very Different adventures everywhere they interact! Love the video!
First, the zombie apocalypse is explained in episode 8 the result from a biological weapon, second the girls were planning to go to a university marked by megunee in episode 12
I'll have to check this out when I get the chance, Might save that for next year's Halloween.

Honestly, I watched episode 1 that ending.. that shit made me cry like legit I feel really bad for Yuuki. She is definitely in the middle of a nervous breakdown and there is nothing anyone can do to help since all of the resources she would need to get that help just doesn't exist for them anymore.

I just recently got my aunt into this series for Halloween time. We binged it in like a day and its enjoyment exceeds her lack of anime viewing experience, let alone tolerance for reading subs. :)
Also, for me, knowing all the twists, watching all the subtle details (especially in audio) is extremely satisfying and the emotional parts still hit hard :'(
That "beach" episode still sucks though. I always skip it up until the scene with Miki and Taroumaru and the later scenes with Tarou by himself. Like those are the only moments of merit that episode.
Haven't watched the dub but what I've heard from them on TH-cam are.....hm. Yuki and Miki sound the same, and it's pretty grating on Yuki's enthusiasm and inconsistent with Miki. Kurumi is fine (not exceptional) and Yuri sounds the youngest despite being the oldest (in maturity.) Megu-nee is perfect though. Kinda hard to get the one adult in the moe group wrong though.
If anyone has watched the entire dub, please let me know if the dub is worth buying the blurays for.

I also see the series as a good analysis of the importance of a source of hope and happiness even in the worst possible situations, so that surviving becomes something truly desirable -- you have something to survive for. One might argue that Yuki was this for the group in the school -- and that the absence of a Yuki is what made Miki and her friend in the shopping center eventually split up. In the school they had something to survive for; in the deposit room in the shopping center, they didn't.

I binged Great Pretender and it was great! Best anime I have seen that covers the world. They go from US to France/ London, Singapore, China. It’s just solid and was something new and refreshing.

Super sad after 4 years there's still no legitimate news on season 2. I don't know how people feel about the anime vs the manga, but I always enjoyed both media's of story telling but as a visual learner, I've always been more captivated in anime and just wish I could get immersed into another anime story telling continuation on this series. It had me crying 2 times harder than when I originally read it. The cast felt so real. Every character was so deep and well written. Guess I'll just go re-read the entire manga for a 3rd time.
It's kind of sad that this series went under the radar when it was airing (as far as I remember) cause it was really good when I first watched it thinking it was just gonna be in a post apocalypses setting and not a Zombie one, but It is really amazing especially how it handled the plot twist, although I've only read some of the Manga I think the show does a better job of making use of its setting epically one it comes to the Greater Twist. Needs a Second Season for sure.

What a huge coincidence. I just watched this in the last two days.
And I loved it.
I read the spoiler free premise before watching, so the first episode floored me with the ending. There was always something OFF but all semed normal as such, and then suddenly she was standing in a broken classroom and the credits. WTF! I might have read zombie apocalypse at some point but I had totally forgotten that before i got to actually watching the show.
I wonder if it was totally obvious to everyone else that their favorite teacher was no longer alive. For me that was a second WTF and also made me a bit teary eyed. Yes I am a man. Yes men can cry.
I love this show, I have considered buying it. I always thought that the ending was an anime only ending and that the manga continued but was that actually all there was? That is really all that stopped me from actually getting it. Maybe I shall. ;-)

@@signaltome Yeah, Taroumaru is pretty much an anime only character, and why they ultimately leave the school is different. I recommend reading from the beginning, it shouldn't take too long.

I'm slowly buying the manga when i can find it but all of my manga-holding-stores have massive jumps on volumes, 1, 7, 12, so it's been kinda difficult lmao
I have to disagree that is was not well supported in the sotry, why the school was build like an emergency shelter. It was even build in the intend to be used as an emergency shelter. Megumi knew part of the truth and maybe a few of her coworker (teacher), too. The spreading of the infection started to fast and the teacher could not even escape their own staff room. Only the few girls that were working on the plants of the school roof and the teacher Megumi were able to survive the first strike of the undead.
The manga concludes the story behind the outbreak, the roots of the bacterium, the reason it could spread and also the solution of the problem.
