The moment Goku says “Krillin- wait..” I’m just about ready to let the tears flow. On a lighter note: remember in DBZ Abridged when Dr. Gero told the Z fighters he spied on them since *this* tournament Goku said “Ooh I remember that one, I got hit by a car!”

Rare moment from the anime where there'll be no filler episodes between arcs. This one starts as soon as the previous one ends. This is also the first time the story gets the more serious tone and higher stakes people would usually associate with DBZ.
Goku's face in sheer panic as he was running to go check on Krillin is crazy its no wonder he turned Super Saiyan after Krillin was killed by frieza. he thought he would never see Krillin again because he was already brought back to life before so it sent him over the edge
I stated this in Aimin's video but Goku acting weird near Krillin's death was meant to signify Goku feeling an evil power nearby or at the very least the first true uneasy feeling he ever felt. Just like in Z when ki control is mastered better the Z warriors could feel if an ally was dying or suffering from fatigue as their power would dwindle rapidly. At this early stage I believe it was Goku first feeling something was wrong and when Krillin was killed Goku felt his presence get snuffed out. This is only a theory but one I believe makes sense to many first viewers
How many franchises would have the guts to begin one saga by ending the other saga with the death of a beloved character! I remember as a kid watch this episode knowing Krillin comes back to life by the beginning of DBZ and still crying.
Toriyama *has* revealed in supplementary material that after Launch disappears from the narrative in Z, she does in fact go to live with Tien and Chiaotzu for a while- But she grows tired of their lifestyle (they have their own farm) and moves out, presumably becoming a truck driver like we see in the Buu arc - but she does still visit Tien and Chiaotzu a lot

There was a bit of mistranslation when Roshi talked to Tien about his win. In the original, Roshi tells Tien that "luck is also a skill", which is why his win was valid (according to Roshi). It sounds a bit like nonsense, but I guess the meaning is supposed to be about how you need to be ready to handle any situation that comes your way, no matter how crazy, and that Goku should've done something to avoid that car (so he didn't "develop his luck skill" enough).
This is the first time Goku felt such rage. He knows Krillin can be revived with the Dragon Balls, so that’s why I think his rage doesn’t explode like it does later on.
That Kamehameha that Goku used to hit Tenshinhan in mir air is the one that he saved in the beginning of the match, when he realised he couldn't hit Tenshinhan with it. Had Goku fired that Kamehameha back then, he would have been out of energy here to fight back. It really shows how smart Goku is when it comes to fighting.
THIS episode marked a irreversible switch in the series that would lay the foundation that leads directly to Dragon Ball Z, kudos on making it there xD! Its going to be a wild ride from here on out.
Another Reason why Launch was urgently needed in the DBZ Manga. She made Tenshinhan imideatly more interesting. Also lets gooooo. The Next Ark was the one who run the most in my Childhood. Definitly my favorite DB Villian.

In Z, Tien was just the silent levelheaded Guy who isnt Piccolo. He wasnt good enough to be a Vegeta, and he had to much dignity to be a Joke like Yamchu, not what this Fate was much better. After his Charakterark in this Saga, and his failed Attempt to be a Hero in the King Piccolo Saga, he kinda just existed. At best you can say hes the Guy whos severely underpowered, but able to deal Damage by sacrificing Lifeforce, but thats at best a Combatrole. It comes up three times, and failed once. There is just nothing interesting about him in Z, besides this small Nieche as Fighter.

I recently heard the manga described the same way you did the show. Not a complex story but fun and comfortable, and easy read you can really get into. As for what happened, I like to think Krillin took the aggro to save the non-combat announcer. Just head canon, but we all know he's that kind of guy.
probably one of the most memorable ends to a fight in dragonball at this point in the series. that one damn minivan. looking forward to seeing how you feel about the next arc. i reccomend samurai jack, steven universe, the owl house an my hero academia if you havent seen it yet.
I did a quick check, and the dub on this episode is really good, but I will say, that at 14:53 in the Japanese version Goku says "I forgot what I was gonna say." which I think is the better line for this scene.

That is fair I would say. Pure brute strength Tien might be stronger, Goku has greater stamina and Roshi better technique and the experience. I think Roshi could have done more to get into Tien's head if he really desired a win in the fight. This fight also really shows Goku is quite the cunning fighter, he learned how to judge strength and when to save his energy to strike at the best opportune moment. With this tournament arc ending, we've also seen the last of the silly tournament fights. Every other fight in the next tournament will be important for story and character development.
I grew up watching DBZ and everything after that. But I’ve never watched the original. Been going on this journey with AniMelon and just experiencing Dragon Ball for the firs time. I never really go around to watching it. But this episode shocked me. I was not expecting it to end like that. Dang 😢
The host was probably knocked with a single hit, Krillin resisted, and so whoever did it had to take care of him. We know it's not an ordinary monster since Krillin is decently strong here.
And so ends another arc; and sadly, Krillin's life. Next up, what is widely considered the show's best arc, the King Piccolo arc. I will be adding Krillin's death to the counter (it's cruel, I know; but sadly it counts as an entry); but I'm waiting until next episode, when the death is shown.

This was the episode I couldn't believe when I was little. The Japanese VHS tapes my parents had ended at this episode and Krillin dying was...my god. I have never felt a shock like that in my life. It completely flipped everything and made the whole series begin to feel so dire. That bit of Krillin going back for Goku's stuff is just haunting. One thing I was always pissed about though was the English version of this. In Japan this is where the second intro started being used in the series, but in English, even on the DVDs, they only ever just play the first intro of the series the entire way through the series x_x But god damn do I love the Announcer XD any tournament without him in the series is automatically worse. When I was little my mom painted a picture of him on his sky-shark-jet thing for me and my brother's Playroom wall. "Skydancing?" Yep ^_^ that's the technique's name. The weird thing is that from watching other reactors to OG Dragon Ball it appears that they do include the second opening online, but it largely depends which streaming site you’re watching it on.
This is why when Goku goes Super Saiyan it hurts so bad!! The last time Krillin died, Goku felt responsible since he wasn't there!! The next time he died, Goku was right there and he couldn't do anything about it!! That is why Goku was ruthless against Frieza! That explosion of anger is what triggered his Super Saiyan transformation!
I wish had saw this show without knowing he was going to die. Like most people I watched DBZ first and couldn't watch DB or read it anywhere, so I just looked online to see what DragonBall was about
Goku was using ultra instinct, not sensing someone's ki going down, because he felt something was going to happen to Krillin before he left, Popo in the filler episodes also teaches goku a form of ultra instinct, which he uses later
Launch chasing after Tenshinhan is the excuse Akira Toriyama used to explain why she just disappeared from the story at some point. Make no mistake, Toriyama is a lousy writer that often forgot details. He literally just forgot about Launch like he did the moon blowing up.

Krill's deaths throughout the series. Dragon Ball-Killed by Tamberian, King Piccolo's goon. Dragon Ball Z-Killed by Frieza and turned into chocolate by Majin Boo. Dragon Ball GT-Killed by Android 17(Controlled by clone 17) Porr Krillin dies a lot.
Tien set up the stage since he can stay airborne but goku always figure out ways to improvise and there are techniques that some characters haven't learned yet to some point of the series and you're right ani melon and hat you have to use your head
And this. THIS is when Dragonball changed forever, and things took a much darker and more serious tone. In fact, this arc and the next arc, depending on how you perceive things or interpret stuff, is the start of the "Z Era." Me myself as a Manga fan first, consider Pilaf-Buu all to be just Dragonball, as there is no Z split in the manga, but yeah. This is where the first dramatic tone shift happens. A main character dies, our first supervillain, etc...

Launch chasing after Tenshinhan is the excuse Akira Toriyama used to explain why she just disappeared from the story at some point.
Make no mistake, Toriyama is a lousy writer that often forgot details. He literally just forgot about Launch like he did the moon blowing up.

Goku sadness over Krillin death hits so much more harder for Goku because you have to remember what grandpa Gohan said to everyone including Krillin please look after Goku for me be there for him like a family
So to Goku Krillin and the other aren't just his friends anymore that his family that build up over the course of his adventures so of course Goku wood have filling of regret over Krillin death because Goku filling like he didn't protect his best friend a new part of his new found family
