  • The oldest daughter of revered composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein offers a rare look at her father on the centennial of his birth in a deeply intimate and broadly evocative memoir.
The composer of On the Town and West Side Story, chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic, television star, humanitarian, friend of the powerful and influential, and the life of every party, Leonard Bernstein was an enormous celebrity during one of the headiest periods of American cultural life, as well as the most protean musician in twentieth century America.
But to his eldest daughter, Jamie, he was above all the man in the scratchy brown bathrobe who smelled of cigarettes; the jokester and compulsive teacher who enthused about Beethoven and the Beatles; the insomniac whose 4 a.m. composing breaks involved spooning baby food out of the jar. He taught his daughter to love the world in all its beauty and complexity. In public and private, Lenny was larger than life.
In Famous Father Girl, Bernstein mines the emotional depths of her childhood and invites us into her family’s private world. A fantastic set of characters populates the Bernsteins’ lives, including: the Kennedys, Mike Nichols, John Lennon, Richard Avedon, Stephen Sondheim, Jerome Robbins, and Betty (Lauren) Bacall.
An intoxicating tale, Famous Father Girl is an intimate meditation on a complex and sometimes troubled man, the family he raised, and the music he composed that became the soundtrack to their entwined lives. Deeply moving and often hilarious, Bernstein’s beautifully written memoir is a great American story about one of the greatest Americans of the modern age.

Should have never allowed the movie to realize.
Brilliant maestro, thanks to woke cultures , will only be remembered as a gay vs. out of the world composer and composer.
Lenard Bernstein mattered the most , all others were antuirage. Including family.

Yes. I didn't like the way he chose to approach Bernstein's life. We know that he was homosexual, that he had several affairs throughout his marriage, but in the film B. Cooper decided to emphasize this too much. So, the film practically does not explore Bernstein's professional life and musical talent, but only his personal life, his complicated marriage and his homosexuality and promiscuity... Younger people who have never heard of Bernstein, who are in their twenties, like my son, they leave the film without knowing him... A person who worked with Callas, with Pavarotti who directed orchestras, who must have spent days, months dedicated to studying scores, appears reduced to someone whose sexual life was the pure debauchery. Even if that was the case, I think he deserved more, he deserved a film that also valued him from the point of view of his talent.

Lennie was a genius - his daughter added nothing to gifts he left the world by her detailed descriptions of his intimate old age physical failings. Leave the man in peace and celebrate his genius. We all ultimately grow old

Very revealing as I grew up watching his young peoples concerts and his performance with the NY Philamonic of Rhapsody in Blue is mesmerizing. But in actuality he was a narcissistic pig. Tongue kissing with abandon...even his own daughter ! LB was a pathetic self indulging genius who used his undeniable musical ability to violate family and friends.
