    I just bought my first R-pod today, and you have taught me more in 1 week than I learned at all today in that so called "walkthrough" that was done at the dealership. Thank you John! keep the instructional videos on R-pods coming!

    The owners manual is inadequate. Thanks for the help on this. They did a quick walkthrough at the dealership and didn't explain how to open the valve to the water heater, so I probably damaged it. It went through 2 cycles of gas ignition and I didn't get water in it. This has been frustrating so far. So your video is a huge help. Wish I'd seen this first!

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Justin, my dealership walk-throughs we equally unimpressive, so I think that your experience is fairly common. Also, there really isn't a good owners manual. This is what motivated me to create all the videos - I wanted to have something I wish I had when I started four years ago. Hopefully your water heater will still work after allowing water into it and retesting. Feel free to add an update when you get there. All the best!

    I’ve had my R-178 for about 5-6 months and the only two things I haven’t used yet are the water heater and convection, grill and roast aspect of the microwave. I watched your microwave help video this morning and just now watched this one. I’ve actually watched many of your videos since I got the R-Pod. They have all been very helpful to me. I'm a travel nurse and I travel by myself. I have had to learn via TH-cam a lot on how to operate my trailer. I'm so glad you posted this video! Having had numerous trailers with this set up, we were shown a shortcut where you turn the electric switch on in the outside compartment and then use the dedicated breaker for the water heater to turn the electric on and off.

    This my 3rd season in our R-Pod 180 and I continue to learn more about this amazing little vehicle. John’s video was very informative about the water system sanitizing and the water heater. We mainly boondock camp using our generator,
    water that we carry in the tank and 5 gallon cans in the jeep. It is good to know that the water heater has an electric heat option when we are camping in Colorado State Parks with the electric hookup. We had to delay our Colorado camping due to an epic ski season with 300% of normal snow pack. There is still snow on the ground in our favorite places.

    Hi John back again. This time on my Suburban water heater. This is my first year with this unit and I was very concerned when I saw that the switch was in the on position for the electric mode of the water heater. Thankfully no damage done and it heated a tank of water up nice. Time to check out the water heater on LP mode. I threw the switch to the on position briefly for the water heater and DSi fault light came on so I turned the switch off and went out and turned on the LP. Came back in and put the water heater switch in the on position for propane. I waited and waited to hear the clicking noise and never did. In addition I didn't get a DSi fault light, so now I'm really confused. Did some googling and TH-cam searches and came up with the heater may need to be reset by pushing the two soft button switches behind the water heater panel. I attempted that and they seemed to be already compressed. Checked everything including LP was on and fuses and breakers but no luck. Any suggestions today? I feel like I'm out of eliminations unless the reset buttons are bad. I know I can still go out, but restricted to shore power. Also do you ever get a strong smell of propane when you open the top cover? I have had this ever since I picked the unit up last fall. Had it in and they said it's common. It also had a grinding motor like sound when I first turned the subject LP tank on. Many thanks!

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MN, have you checked that you are getting propane at your stove? I do not get a strong smell of propane when I open the cover. I only get a strong smell when I unhook the propane tank. You may have a faulty connection at your propane tank or a faulty regulator. I would check with your dealer to see if your propane regulator has a recall. Mine did on my Keystone Bullet.

    • @mnnomad1870
      @mnnomad1870 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnMarucci yes propane at my stove and the furnace lites. When I checked for spark at the water heater I got down and blew out the burner and tube really good then ran some errands and came back and threw the switch on and heard a big roar as the heater lit. Shut it off try it again and looks like we're good. Made some nice hot water. I switched over to my other LP tank and the strong smell seems to dissipate. I'll have to get it back down to the dealer but makes me kind of nervous driving with a leaky propane tank or faulty regulator.

    Thanks for the video John!! I will be running hot water for the first time this weekend and will be plugged in and using electric only. Does the interior switch have to be on as well or is that specifically for propane only? Thanks, appreciate all the great info, Paul

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Paul Medina The hot water interior switch does not need to be on for the electric element to work in the water tank. It only controls the propane. Thanks for watching!

    @bruceklutz2870 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    John, thanks for the water heater instruction. I didn't have a very good instruction on my walk thru either. This helped!!! I think I heard you say on another video not to turn on the electric water heater switch until the tank is full, correct? Do you have any instruction on the propane system? Checking for leaks, stove and refrigerator? Great job!! Happy Camping Bruce

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruce, you certainly do not want to run the water heater on electric without it being full of water. It can burn out the element. As far as propane, I usually check it at the stove first to ensure I have flow as this bleeds the lines of air. Once I can light the stove, I know propane is in the lines and all other items that use propane should work (fridge, furnace, hot water heater). Hope this helps.

  • @RickMansfield

    Okay, I just bought my first RV: an R-Pod 171. I’ve been very confused about the water heater, so I’m glad to find this video.
    I do have a question, though, that I didn’t see answered here. If I am going to use shore power electric to power the water heater, I now know to turn on that switch on the outside of my RV like you demonstrated. But what about the switch inside? Do I still need to turn that on if I’m just using electric or is the inside switch ONLY for propane heating?

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  ปีที่แล้ว

      The inside switch is only for propane. You can run both electric and propane together or not. If I have 30 amp shore power I usually save my propane. Just remember to turn your electric heating element off when departing the campsite. All the best in 2023!

    We recently bought a Gulfstream Enlighten and have a Suburban hot water heater also, but a different model. I have been very frustrated with the lack of information in the owner’s manual with this camper. The hot water heater has a reset button on the outside (and no switch for electric like yours) . I have no idea what this reset button is for. Any ideas? Thank you SO much for your clear, step by step videos!

    Nice.
    These little campers come with great features.
    My RV doesn’t have electric.
    Getting the rpod today.
    My question is do you still use the switch inside to turn on the water heater when electric is on or do I have to run outside to turn the switch on every time I’m gonna shower?
    No way to by pass this to where the rpod automatically switches to electric when plugged in and propane when not?

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sometimes will turn the outside switch (electric heating element) on after I have set up and plugged in at a campsite and just leave in on (must already have water in the tank). The indoor switch (propane) can be used in conjunction with the electric element if you want to heat the water up more quickly or they can be run independently of each other. Some people have run a bypass switch inside or just flip the breaker to the external element. As far as I know, there is no way to have it automatically switch between the sources, but you may want to inquire on the Rpod owners forum to see if anyone has created a mod for this: rpod-owners.com

    • @RVingTheCountry
      @RVingTheCountry 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnMarucci ahh, the breaker as a switch is a good idea.

    In this video John you say 30amp shore power a couple of times. What if your site only has a 15amp service? I've been at campgrounds where there is no 30amp service sites available but they tell me they can offer a 15amp site. Would the electric hot water tank still work? • @JohnMarucci

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I am understanding correctly, your carbon monoxide alarm is going off when you fire up your furnace. This could be the real-deal or a malfunctioning alarm. I would probably take the C-M alarm I have at home to the trailer and see if it reacts similarly. If you don't have a spare, you can pick one up at a home store. If the one in the trailer and the one you bring into the trailer both go off when the furnace is running, you have serious and dangerous issue and need to have the furnace serviced. If not, you probably simply need to replace the C-M alarm. Please be safe.

      You can use both the electric element and propane at the same time should you want to heat the water more quickly. It usually takes 20 or so minutes for the water to get hot on the electric element only, but you should test both to ensure they work properly. Hope this makes sense. Thanks!

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Elie,
      Using both will decrease recovery time, so in theory if you keep both on, you would have hot water longer. However, it is still only a six-gallon tank and you still have to adjust vs taking a long shower at home. There are expensive on-demand hot water heaters for RVs that solve for this for the most part. You can search Google for RV tankless water heaters to research. All the best.

    • @eliebulka2414
      @eliebulka2414 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnMarucci so I assume turning on both systems will not damage the water tank, right? I just want to experiment with this a little and get the most out of it. Short-field showers are okay but I can use a longer one.. I think all 64 year olds deserve that 😉

    I released the pressure valve before I removed the anode rod. But as I unscrewed the rod, water continued to pour out the opening. Took about 5 minutes before it trickled to a halt. Is this okay? Is this expected? You didn't really mention that part but I waited and tightened up the new rod. Still felt some moisture - not a real drip - and had to give it another one billionth of a turn, fearing that I'd strip the threads. With no pressure or water, then, in the heater another check around the perimeter came up fingers dry. Just wondering with the water pouring out the opening if this was as expected or should I have drained water out somewhere else. Thanks, John, just bought a used 179 and we've been binge-watching your videos. Good Job.

      I am using the torque wrench only because it is the only 1/2 drive large socket driver I own (I torque lugs nuts regularly with it). John, I have one question! My daughter and I are setting out next week for 17 days on the road with the Rpod. I am trying to be totally prepared and informed. Most of the trip we will have full hook ups which I have never used. My question is this..... do city water hook ups fill the hot water heater with out the pump on? Usually I start the pump to fill up the water heater when we are using the fresh water. Probably a lame question, but want to make sure I don't need to run the pump at all on city hook up. Thank you!!!!!

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Libby, the city water connection is pressurized and will fill up the hot water tank. If you don’t already have one, make sure you are using a water pressure regulator on the city water connection as some campgrounds have high water pressure that can potentially damage plumbing. Thanks!

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joan, sorry to hear you are having trouble with the electric water heater element. I can give you the steps I would take, and it is very possible you have already done all of these...
      1. While plugged into 30 amp shore power, check the fuse panel to ensure you don't have any fuse blown.
      2. Triple check that you're not bypassing the hot water tank so that water will flow into the tank. My dewinterization video shows the proper way the valves need to be turned so water flows into the tank.
      3. Make sure your water source for filling the hot water tank is working. This means you are either hooked up to city water or you're using fresh water from your fresh water tank. Your pump should be drawing water from the fresh water tank (if not using city water) and will fill your hot water tank if it is not bypassed.
      4. Once you believe there is water in the hot water tank, check the pressure relief valve outside at the tank to ensure water comes out. Only hold open for a very short moment and water should flow out (stand to the side when doing this so you don't get wet)!
      5. Now that you know you have water in the hot water tank, ensure you are plugged into 30 amp shore power and turn on the switch to the electric element and wait 10 minutes. Test for hot water at your sink.
      6. If it still doesn't work, I personally would at this point get a professional to look at it. If you or someone you know is good with a volt meter, you could test that current is getting to the switch, but you need to be careful with any open electrical circuit. Personally at this point I would be getting professional help since electrical is not my strength.
      Sorry again and I hope this helps. Please let us know how things proceed.

      Tom, congrats on getting the new R-Pod. The 189 is a great layout. Make sure the dealer does a thorough walk-through of the unit with you before you take it. Have them show you that everything works. If you have someone with you, possibly have them video tape the walk-through for future reference. Be bold, interrupt the dealer, and ask any questions you have, especially if your walk-through is moving too fast. If you see things that don't look right, point them out. If the dealer is installing a weight distribution hitch, make sure they run you through using it and try to video tape that as well. Congrats again, it's an exciting time! Thanks for watching!

I watch carefully as the check valve is replaced with a new one and all is good. Thing is, I can't find such a check valve on my RPod 178 6 gallon Suburban water heater. I know there's one on the water pump and the city water inlet. I've even looked at the parts schematic for my model of water tank (SW6 DE) and it doesn't show a check valve. so, for boondocking....one only needs to use propane for the hot water heater.......unless you start up a generator, then the same process for turning on electric....I am confused about both your comment re propane and electric working at same time....

      Greg, if you are at a campsite with 30 amp shore power and you have water in your hot water tank, you can use the electric water heater as shown in the video. Just turn the outside switch on. Make sure you have water in the tank. If you want the hot water to recover faster, you can also have the propane on to heat the water, so you are actually using both sources to heat the water simultaneously. I never do this, but it could come in handy if someone took a really long shower and emptied all the heated water and you wanted it to heat up (recover) faster. Thanks for the comment!

      Glad the video was helpful. I was in the same boat as my dealer never mentioned the electric heating element during the walkthrough and I discovered it much later. All the best!

      Doesn’t it make you sad knowing you could have saved so much propane? Haha

      @@RVingTheCountry Actually ? I seldom use it ...it takes longer to heat the water than it takes the propane and it revs up the geny real high.... (-:
      on shore power , definitely the better choice
