I totally forgot about Colette until I saw the screenshots 🤣 It was good, but apparently forgettable. Mary Shelly is on my list and I'm excited to watch it!
I know she wrote children's books, but I absolutely LOVED Miss Potter (Beatrix Potter). I had loved the books but knew nothing about her life and enjoyed how they showed her grow into knowing herself and her value as a writer. The land trust was an awesome thing she did too.
I can't help myself but recommend "84 Charing Cross Road ". Both the book and the movie adaptation. The book is a collection of letters that were exchanged between an american writer and a man working on a bookstore in England (so is a true story). At first she was only ordering books, but with time a special friendship is formed between them. It's both funny and heartwarming, and it's full of love for books.
One movie I enjoyed & would recommend is Stranger Than Fiction. It’s not focussed on writing exactly, it tells the story of a guy who starts to hear his life narrated & realises he is a fictional character. But the scenes that do focus on a writer (played by Emma Thompson 😍) really add to the story, and the discussions around what makes good fiction / what makes a good life are sweet & uplifting (if a little cheesy) Loved this video :)
Thanks for reminding me! I loved that movie, and definitely need to watch again! Love anything with Emma Thompson! (actually just finally watched How to Build a Girl because she was in it, but turns out she's only in the very last few minutes, bummer!) :)
I don't like Will Ferrel's comedy but this isn't that kind of film and I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked him in it. And the rest of the cast are great. So I recommend it even if you're not sure.
@@ArielBissett definitely give it another go! i too tried the first episode and found it very cringey but i waited a couple of days before continuing the watch and in the end i binged it in two days! it also helps that it's a short format. my favourite episode is the one where they introduce Thoreau, it's so damn funny!
Oh gosh! You must watch Kill your darlings with Daniel Radcliffe playing Alan Ginsberg!!! It is absolutely fantastic. I also recommend The hours, which is a free adaptation of Mrs. Dalloway and has Nicole Kidman playing Virginia Wolf. I also adore Mary Shelley and Deconstructing Harry
Stuck in Love! Stuck in Love! Stuck in Love!! It follows a whole family and they are all writers in fact the movie was originally called Writers when it was entered into film festivals but they changed it!! It’s my fav movie of all time highly suggest 💕

Geurnsey Literary is also a novel! And I did really like the movie, but I LOVE the novel. It’s a book that I pick up every time I run into it in a used book store because I loan it out so often I need to keep multiple copies in the house. It’s just... so warm and lovely and feels like a hug.
Ok adding myself to the Guernsey discourse. I totally agree that it feels like a hug! But... [SPOILERS (kind of) below!] This was an instance where I actually thought the movie was better than the book because, in the book, there didn’t seem to be high enough stakes around Elizabeth. Like, everyone seemed ok with Juliette writing about her from the get go and the central plot was the love story. I liked the momentum and mystery that the movie created around Elizabeth, Kit, and the occupation of Guernsey.
@@kathrynhornyak823 I feel like I loved it because it was low stakes. But I think there were also almost 2 years between film and book for me, so my comparison isnt the best. But I read the book fairly fast while I wasnt interested enough in the movie to watch it im one sitting. The break before I finished it was kind of long, so I guess that says something towards my personal enjoyment of the book. But I see were you are coming from :)

@@kathrynhornyak823 OMG YES!!! I read the book and was honestly a bit disappointed that it didn't make me feel the way the movie did, but I think it's because the scenery in the movie is magical and I really loved Michiel Huisman as Dawsey Adams.
Okay, I love what this is about, but oh my god, can we please talk about the colors in that room and how I am absolutely obsessed with it??? I am loving how you are transforming the house is an absolute delight. I was sad to see that "Stranger Than Fiction" wasn't on here. It's about the only Will Ferrell movie that I really like and Emma Thompson as the writer was AMAZING.
I looove that you mentioned Paterson! Watched it in theatres in 2016 and it became one of my favourites immediately. His poems were written by Ron Padgett, that's why they're sososo good. (also, endless love for your writing videos. Hope everything's going great! Hugs from Spain
I love The Man Who Invented Christmas. It's about Charles Dickens writing the Christmas Carol and it's probably the best portrayal of the writing process I've seen in a movie.
I just watched "The Man Who Invented Christmas" last year during Christmas time. I am not a huge Dickens fan, but I do love the Christmas Carol, but this was surprisingly good for me. I loved the process of writing this book and all of the surrounding issues going on, big fan of that. Also, Finding Neverland was very good as well.
Watched Midnight in Paris, Ruby Sparks & Paterson - all great films! I guess one of my favourites is Freedom Writers, if you haven't seen it I recommend it. Really love the topic, soundtrack and the cast!
Paterson is based on William Carlos Williams 1946 work and inspired the conceptual feel of the film, he's one to get if you want a poetry collection to glance at occasionally when the mood strikes; also,in addition to the comment section recommends, and admittedly heavier in themes and writing than most care for and may not be your cup of tea, Naked Lunch and Barfly are two worth searching out and watching.
you should check out the 1994 version of Little Women, with Winona Ryder, Kristen Dunst, Susan Sarandon, Clare Danes, & Christian Bale. I adore it. also, if you haven't seen Stranger Than Fiction, it's another good movie about a writer, kinda similar to the plot you described for Ruby Sparks (which I haven't seen, just going off your synopsis).
Paterson is one of my favorite films and I actually squealed when you mentioned it! But if I'll have to choose my most favorite film about a writer, it would be Whisper of the Heart. It's a Studio Ghibli film and honestly one of the most heartwarming things I've ever seen. It's about a bookworm and budding writer who falls in love with another bookworm. ❤️ Thought I might share, too: anyone who's into journalistic writing should watch The Post.
I LOVE Kill Your Darlings, all about Allen Ginsberg and the other beat poets of the era in their early years. It's really dark and awesome and between that and another favourite, What If?, you can really see how incredible Daniel Radcliffe's post-Harry Potter range.
"Waiting For The Moon" 1987 with Linda Hunt as Alice B. Toklas, & Linda Bassett as Gertrude Stein. Very well crafted and script flows like their distinct writing styles.
I love Paterson so much, I watched a bunch of Adam Driver movies a couple of years ago and this is my favourite. Does 'Stand by me' count as the main boy is a writer, because that film is so beautiful. Maybe Perks of Being a Wallflower, because Charlie is always writing letters and is inspired by his English teacher, to maybe write a book in the future.
The movie Genius is an awesome and a very intense movie to watch. It is about the author Thomas Wolfe the writer and Maxwell Perkins his editor’s relationship. Also, all the struggles a writer can go through. Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Jude Law play the main characters in the movie. A must see.
I just had a strange Sliding Doors realisation. If the pandemic hadn't happened, Ariel would never have bought a house. None of these videos would exist. The pandemic is so, so awful, but this is something really wonderful and beautiful which only happened because of it. Food for thought 🌻
What a great list! If you haven’t seen 84 Charing Cross Road, it’s a really great one. It’s based on a real story (and a book!) about an American writer writing letters to a London bookshop in the 50s, it’s so so so good!
Have you seen Purple Violets? It's one of my favorites. It follows 2 writers who were a couple in college then grew apart and meet a while later, each learning how to come to terms with who they are as writers. You should definitely check it out.
if you enjoy more whimsical stories I would really recommend Whisper of the Heart, it's a really sweet self-discovering story of a teenager writing her first book after deciding she wants to test her skills and discover if she really has a talent for writing. The animation is beautiful and the journey of Shizuku as a writer is really realistic and heart warming. If you are on the fence about starting to write, I feel this movie will inspire you to take the first step
Absolutely loving the Merida, Disney-style curly hair! I will never forget the first time I watched Midnight in Paris, and I was just in love. Love the video!
I loved this video!! Also, if you liked the Guernsey movie, I would really recommend reading the book because I thought it was so much sweeter and better!
I love Jarmusch I've only seen his early work so far but I've really been meaning to see Paterson for a while. He has a really beautiful way of capturing life.
Now that was a smooth sponsorship. Perfect tie in and honestly, because I clicked on this, I def need to watch that documentary too. I am a sucker for movies about writers but it's really interesting seeing them side by side like this and unpacking the similarities or common struggles of a writer like this.
Becoming Jane, the help, freedom writers (needs more hype honestly), limitless, and the words (this was so good and gives Hemingway vibes not sure if just me but sooo good). Love this video so much a nod never heard of most of these so I can’t wait to watch them! Also please do book to movie adaptation!!
Yes to another video like this! I am always on a lookout for new movies about writers! Less known movies like this I can recommend are “Not Another Happy Ending” and “How to Get Over a Breakup”. The latter is Peruvian and it’s on Netflix, first one is Scottish and unfortunately I don’t know where you can watch it now. Also, speaking of Netflix, there’s a Spanish series called “Valeria” that is also about a writer! All of those are rather light and uplifting, all of the about female writers, HIGHLY recommend!
You should see if an archive or museum would be interested in the letters! Unless they're too personal of course! Letters are an invaluable source for historians, researchers, students, etc. And we love the history and the story behind them!
Midnight in Paris is one of my favourite movies too, and I was so conflicted when I learned more about Woody Allen... Fortunately (or unfortunately I guess) I bought a physical copy of it years ago before I knew about how disgusting he is, so I can watch it as much as I want without continuously supporting him.
One of my favorite movies about writers is also Stuck in Love starring a bunch of well known authors (e.g. Lilly Collins)! I think you’ll probably enjoy it! It focuses on writing and love around these three people (father, daughter, son)
What a intro! Another film about a writer I would say or recommend is Orlando with Tilda Swinton. It’s about this poet named Orlando who has lived from the Elizabethan times and almost all throughout history. It’s based on a Virginia Wolf novel. It can be a bit artsy and confusing if you aren’t paying attention, but it’s very a beautiful film. Orlando is played amazingly well by Swinton. I definitely recommend it.
Easy. *84 Charing Cross Road* is my favourite book. But I saw the movie first. I loved it very much and I did not even know it was a book adaptation. So I was thrilled when I found out, especially when the book was even more wonderful. I also really like *The Wonder Boys* and *Morvern Callar* that are also both adaptations (of books I have not read, and of which I only found out much later were adaptations) And I did see *Patterson* and enjoyed it a lot. And I like *Midnight in Paris* and *The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society* as well.
Not me being infinitely amused by how many times you changed the thumbnail for this video 😉 I would’ve watched either way but i understand the struggle of not being happy with how it looks, I did the same thing yesterday xD I adore this one btw, The best thumbnail so far ❤️ Anyways regarding the video, The introduction was SO GOOD!!! So beautiful 😍 I always wanted to watch midnight in Paris but I still haven’t gotten around it, but maybe I’ll watch it today 😉 Also that sequence with Jo writing in little women is probably my favourite thing ever! I had such a big smile on my face and tearing up too, it was amazing! Loved the potato peel society (I don’t remember the whole title lmao) too, it was so cute and it makes me happy every time I rewatch it. Also I definitely have to watch Colette, too, because I LOVE KEIRA too!! How did I not watch it already???? Anywho, thanks for making this video!I’ve been wanting to gather up the movies about writing and watch them all, and you made my life easier ❤️
But does the film about Hemingway include information about his 6-toed cats??? 😺😄 Your office is looking so beautiful! I need to watch Ruby Sparks and Paterson. One of my all-time favourite movies about writers is 'The Hours'. Also 'Julia' about Lillian Hellman, 'An Angel at My Table' about Janet Frame and, most recently, 'The Forty-Year-Old Version' about a NYC struggling playwright who becomes a rapper. I could make a whole video about this subject too! 📚
i'm so excited to check out the hemingway documentary!! he's probably my favourite writer of prose ever and i have a rooted connection with him because i grew up in the north east of italy where he came as a soldier during WWI. i love to read his descriptions of the venetian countryside because as much as the landscape has changed there's still that weird familiarity, plus he almost alway quotes actual places and things and it's just really cool to know personally what he's talking about! also, great movie selection! all the ones i've seen already i absolutely love and the ones i haven't seen seem super cool :) (and i concur more people should watch more jim jarmusch movies!)
Omg please watch Stranger Than Fiction. It's a gorgeous movie that my boyfriend recently showed me cause hes like "it's about writing, you'll love it." It was wonderful.
"The man who invented Christmas", about Charles Dickens, is really good at showing what some writers go through, and how they might "meet" their characters... I really enjoyed it! Also generally a good Christmas film!
Thank you for this video! Definitely checking out these films. That scene in Little Women of Jo writing in the attic by candlelight moved me to tears. As a writer myself, it so accurately captured that powerful experience of being in the flow of creativity!
Also! You should watch “The Words” it’s about a writer who is having writers block and he finds a beautiful story in this really old briefcase at an antique store and he publishes it with his name!
Ahhhh I love this genre of films and am so glad you talked about your faves! and I love hearing you talk about film! I hope you do more of these (they don't even have to be writer/book related! Even just talking about the creativity of films would be so fun!). I have a recommendation for you, though it might be a bit offbeat lol - there's a Bollywood film called Zindagi na Milegi Dobara (You Won't Get Another Life... rough translation lol). It's about this guy who is super successful and in a relationship and all is going well but then his girlfriend breaks up with him and says he sucks and he doesn't really know what to do! But his friend announces he's getting married and wants to do this big road trip for his bachelor party so these 3 friends who've known each other for years set out on this big adventure and meet great people. One of the friends is a poet and you hear his poetry throughout the film and it is BEAUTIFUL. Highly highly recommend the film, I feel like you'll enjoy it a lot - it's charming and fun but also quiet and contemplative at times, and the soundtrack (because of course it's got the Bollywood songs) is phenomenal.
I remember you did a similar video a few years ago and it included Midnight in Paris. After watching your video, I watched Midnight in Paris for the first time, LOVED it, and now watch it on a regular basis. Such an incredible movie! Check out Miss Potter if you can. Such a charming movie about Beatrix Potter (wrote the Peter Rabbit series). It just made me want to go to write and go to England again!
The Man Who Invented Christmas is so good!!! It's about Charles Dickens writing A Christmas Carol and it's so interesting the way it depicts him finding characters and how the story unfolds. Come December, definitely must watch!
Maybe you’ve already seen it but the movie Stranger than Fiction has a concept similar to Ruby Sparks! (It’s a romance-sci-fi-comedy & stars Emma Thompson and Maggie Gyllenhaal and Will Ferrell and Queen Latifah). So so good!!
Loved this video! Patterson is so good! My fave movies about writers are Like Crazy, Can You Ever Forgive Me, Spotlight, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and Young Adult. I’m definitely going to go watch Ruby Sparks now

Have you seen Stranger Than Fiction? So good, similar to Ruby Sparks in ways, one of my all time favourites. Don’t let the Will Ferrell aspect put you off, he’s actually really good in it as a and plays a quiet, straight laced character, no silly antics of any sort! Plus you have Emma Thompson playing the writer in this story, who is always *chef’s kiss* 10/10 would recommend 👍🏻
When I was watching The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society I was crying in longing since I used to work in Guernseys for some time and I love that island 🧡😭

My daughter has my dad's field typewriter from WWII, he used it as adjudant to a general, we have letters he wrote to my mom.
Secret Window is a good one as well...
the intro!! the colours in the background!!!!!! i-
🙈🙈🙈
I also really like *The Wonder Boys* and *Morvern Callar* that are also both adaptations (of books I have not read, and of which I only found out much later were adaptations)
And I did see *Patterson* and enjoyed it a lot. And I like *Midnight in Paris* and *The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society* as well.
the colours in your office are fab😍 a constantly reminder that you chose the goodreads reading challenge colour!!
My all time favorite movie about a writer is Finding Forester. Really heartwarming and the ending was so tender. ❤❤
Not me being infinitely amused by how many times you changed the thumbnail for this video 😉 I would’ve watched either way but i understand the struggle of not being happy with how it looks, I did the same thing yesterday xD
I adore this one btw, The best thumbnail so far ❤️
Anyways regarding the video,
The introduction was SO GOOD!!! So beautiful 😍
I always wanted to watch midnight in Paris but I still haven’t gotten around it, but maybe I’ll watch it today 😉
Also that sequence with Jo writing in little women is probably my favourite thing ever!
May I say these purple and soft blue colors behind you are so pretty, I mean how cute can a door be!
so, so cute 😊
Loved Hemingway documentary. Currently reading " To whom the bell toll" Thank you for mentioning.
I love Patterson and Only Lovers left alive. My fav movie.
Jim Jarmush is so good.
I don't enjoy many movies but these did spark my attention! I would also love to hear recs of movies about books. Can't wait for that video!
So glad Midnight in Paris was the first one you spoke about, it's so good. I also love Stranger than Fiction.
But does the film about Hemingway include information about his 6-toed cats??? 😺😄
Your office is looking so beautiful! 📚
i had a hemingway cat growing up! it’s really all I know about him is the cats!
Hahaha it does talk a lot about his pets!! But somehow didn’t mention that they had 6 toes, haha!
i'm so excited to check out the hemingway documentary!! he's probably my favourite writer of prose ever and i have a rooted connection with him because i grew up in the north east of italy where he came as a soldier during WWI. i love to read his descriptions of the venetian countryside because as much as the landscape has changed there's still that weird familiarity, plus he almost alway quotes actual places and things and it's just really cool to know personally what he's talking about!
also, great movie selection! all the ones i've seen already i absolutely love and the ones i haven't seen seem super cool :) (and i concur more people should watch more jim jarmusch movies!)
Stuck in Love & Stranger Than Fiction!!! I love both of them sooooo much!!
Thanks for the movies. Love all the color in the video from the door to the trim to your nails.
Yes! Please make a video about movies about books! And maybe one about movies about reading/education too. 💙
Stuck in Love, Guernsey..., and Little Women are my favorites! I also really loved Becoming Jane and Julie & Julia!
Loved Ruby Sparks so much. Definitely a favorite. Other favorites are Stranger than Fiction, Nims Island, and Hush
I literally just rewatched Midnight in Paris and then it’s the first movie you list I love this
woo to ruby sparks! zoe and dan are amazing. would also love a video on movies about books. and/or books about books!
Thank you for the recommendations! Several of these have been on my to-be-watched list! I think it’s time to prioritize them!!
I am so excited to try these! I love these types of videos and 100% would love to hear one on movies about books!
The Man Who Invented Christmas is so good!!! It's about Charles Dickens writing A Christmas Carol and it's so interesting the way it depicts him finding characters and how the story unfolds. Come December, definitely must watch!
I LOOOVE Paterson, I watched it a million times because it was so calming and beautiful.
I **ABSOLUTELY** would love a video about movies about books! Love these types of videos :)
Loved this video! Patterson is so good! My fave movies about writers are Like Crazy, Can You Ever Forgive Me, Spotlight, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and Young Adult. I’m definitely going to go watch Ruby Sparks now
This was such a fun video! I definitely added some new movies to my watch list, but also I agree, I absolutely adore Midnight in Paris so much. Also the door/trim colours are so fantastic ✨
Love, love, love the typewriter! Not sure if my kids even know what one is or looks like. Also lovin the purple and blue in your office. Looking forward to seeing the video on it...
Ariel is such a joy to listen to. And watch. And spend time with. (Clearly, that’s why we are here)
I'm looking forward to watching some of these. "Saving Mr. Banks" was a good movie about writer PL Travers. I recommend it.
Just finished watching Paterson. Thank you for the recommendation. The movie is beautiful!
Thank you for the video and yes I would love to see a follow up video about movies with books being the central theme.
I'm already waiting for Part 2 of this video. :)
When I was watching The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society I was crying in longing since I used to work in Guernseys for some time and I love that island 🧡😭
Yess...I want a video about movies bout booksss!! Loved this onee! 🥰
