I'm 24 and I read the Hunger Games for the first time this year and I have to say, it was pretty good and I enjoyed it! I used to be crazy about the Divergent series but when I re-read the first book of that series this year I was immensely disappointed. The books honestly aren't that good XD.

I reread The Hunger Games triology this year too and I was blown away! Never remembered them being so good when I first read them at 13..

During this wild year, I wrote my dissertation (partially) on the Hunger Games and one of my other papers on King Lear & Station Eleven, and it's just so fascinating that like, you know, I don't know you and we both were so moved by the same (not exactly new) books this year. Thank goodness for literature.

Thanks for recommending Albatross! I'm listening to the audiobook and am hooked!! The narrator (author) reminds me so much of Stuart McLean, who I miss so much, and it's like listening to a Vinyl Cafe storytime! Ahh, good times. :)

Your podcast totally convinced me to pick up Station Eleven even though it's usually not my thing at all to read speculative/sci-fi stuff, I agree so much that diving into the book in the middle of an ACTUAL pandemic elevated it a lot, you could just feel it on a deeper level. Also it may or may not have sent me into "what-if-technology-collapses-tomorrow" mode and I spent the summer printing photos of my family and dog because WHAT IF lol

I read Station Eleven in January before the pandemic really hit the states, and it definitely did help me process everything and put it all in perspective this year. It’s a great book.

It's always appreciated when reviewers give a head's up that something has content that can be offensive; especially if a certain thing bothers you. Different things really bother different people. Unless it's a trigger for you, it's good when people can put those things aside and still enjoy something. You can point out those issues, and I personally can get a bit aggravated when there is injustice and things that are unfair in a book or something and in a way that the author is approving of. Creations ,like people, are going to have flaws. I don't like when people ruin things and try to literally get them banned though, and I especially don't like when people attack the fans of something because it has problematic content. Some are missing out on some really good content just because it's not perfect. You can talk about problematic aspects of something while still enjoying it and getting a lot out of it.

Last year I was so busy with final year of school and other life stressors that I only read 8 books, and that felt defeating. This year I set a goal of 35, and this week I met that goal!! Feels so good to crush the goal I had, and have it be so much higher than previous years. My top 5 of 2020 are Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh, Night by Elie Wiesel, Parable of the Talents by Octavia Butler, and Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

You mentioned your experience reading Station Eleven this year, and how it related to everything going on in our world, and I actually had a similar experience. I read The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker back in April, during which everything was shut down where I live. I haven’t read Station Eleven, so I don’t know how similar the plots are. What I really liked about The Dreamers, was that is depicted the effects of the epidemic on both an intimate level, and a larger scale. Maybe you’d like to check it out?
Anyways, thanks for the recommendations, I’ll definitely be adding some to my (endless) to be read list!

The bell jar is my all time favourite book....but do not read it if you are feeling any sort of mental illness. I read it the first time when I was just beginning my first bout of severe depression and it made things worse. But however now doing much better, and reading it again and i was able to read it with a new point of view of overcoming mental illness

It was a pleasant surprise that you recommended "Kim Ji Young, born 1982" from South Korea (Which is where I am from!). I did not expect that! The book was a mega best-seller here in Korea initiating meaningful conversations on feminism and social issues. Also thanks for recommending various genres on your list, I will definitely grab some of the books for myself :)
