I remember when I first heard Alestorm. It was on a online radio station with a DJ who decided to play a song from a band he use to be in. That DJ was called Doug and was a former drummer for Alestorm and that must have been about 10+ years ago now. It feels kinda crazy to hear this relatively unknown metal band with only 1 album to their name. Then a couple of years later hear their songs all over the college I went to. To now, probably one of the most successful metal bands under the Napalm Records banner.

Jari from Wintersun should listen to the part at 7:04
"It's hard to create when you've got every possibility. When you give yourself limits, you force yourself to be creative in other ways."
Jari thinks the key to creating his perfect albums is to get a super computer with tonnes of software and hardware and shove it all in his own personal studio. Well maybe he should just take a look at himself in the mirror and achieve what he can with what he has. But he'll never do that because his music is simply too majestic and fantastic to be anything less than what he considers perfect..... apart from when he made the Forest Seasons with what he currently has, proving he can do it just that refuses to do it.

I asked if they wanted to hear some actual pirate metal. So of course I played Alestorm, loudly, outdoors in a neighborhood, for about two hours. It had my boss and the crew rolling lol. That was about a year ago, we still talk about it and will ask me to play pirate music from time to time. Thank you for that. Happy silly fun metal for everyone!
Also I would like to mention that there is a bit of a theme in the more popular folk metal bands of happy fun music that doesn't take itself too seriously. Alestorm epitomizes that and I think is the most popular in folk metal, largely for that reason.

@@MrDynamite110 Captain Morgan's Revenge is a serious song from the lyrics, but it takes it's sillyness from the double-meaning: the "Captain Morgan" in the song can also be interpreted as the famous rum's brand. "Fell down to the depths" could just mean drinking down the rum, and the curse, as the song is not clear about what it exactly is, only that it's "worse than death", can be interpreted as a hangover. Thus, the hanging at sunrise can also be a metaphor for tomorrow's hangover.

The reason I love Alestorm so much is the fact they don't take themselves seriously. I enjoy serious metal, but sometimes you just wanna have fun and have a laugh, and these guys deliver perfectly almost every time. I can't stand fuckers who act so elitist and act like metal has to be so serious every time, all the time. The art of music is creating whatever the hell you want, and Alestorm doesn't give the slightest shit what anyone thinks, and that's why I love them.

Alestorm was hands down some of the most fun I've ever had at a metal show. Saw them with Gloryhammer not too long ago, absolutely mad. Still have an inflatable duck from that show. He's gotta give himself some more credit though, not exactly talentless when you've got epic, long and intricate songs like 1741, Sunset on the Golden Age, Leviathan, and To the End of the World on your resume

They are on my to see on tour.
Hoping they come stateside in the later half of this year, or in the early months of 2023.
Also, regarding the ducks, look up James Veitch.
Specifically the one video of his, a flatmate, and lots of rubber ducks.

Love alestorm!! Still convinced I coined the rower pit around 5 years back in NYC in January when they played with swashbuckle! I sat down during Nancy the tavern wench, wearing a kilt and Hawaiian shirt, and started rowing. Someone ran up and asked if I was ok, then I saw legs next to me. Then about 80 people dropped lol. Swashbuckle quoted "only in NY would you see something this fucked up!!" Then from alestorm "Row ya bastards!!!!"

In Germany we have a metal genre that is not really defined by sound, lyrics or looks, but this genre is all about fun. And it's called Fun Metal (or Comedy Metal). There are bands like 'Feuerschwanz' and bands like 'Electric Callboy' or 'J.B.O' in that genre. Sadly, that genre is neither much known nor very popular in the rest of the world, partly cause the majority of the bands is german and sings in german.
Alestorm, Gloryhammer, Korpiklaani are so popular in Germany, cause they are part of that Fun Metal genre AND sound awesome and are great live.
