    This episode, and the lyrics in particular, are even more impressive, in context. The mustard scene is very apt, because ALL of the dirty laundry gets aired this episode, and virtually every character-based subplot hits its point of no return right here, without bogging down or distracting from the musical feel of the episode. Truly impressive work.
    Great reaction!!

    What I love most about Once More With Feeling is the fact that it's not just a one-off filler episode, but actually an integral part of the story of Buffy season 6. Before this episode a lot of the characters were keeping secrets from each other, and many of the secrets are unwillingly revealed in this episode that literally forces them to sing about their feelings.

    The entire show is worth a watch. It’s not perfect and the first season or so is a bit shaky. But it still stands out as one of the most groundbreaking shows with a ton of really good episodes, including this one. This musical episode is so driven by character dynamics and history, and it’s in the midst of a lot of arcs. So, it’s hard to get into if you’re not familiar with the show. But it’s still fun enough and well-written enough to stand on its own.

  • @Sims2Squared
    @Sims2Squared 3 ปีที่แล้ว +79

    If only that actually was a happy musical ending.... it wasn't, even though it gives the appearance of being so. But it does start one of the best toxic relationship arcs ever written, so there's that!
    Fun reaction, now do the whole show. :P lol

      the thing the buffy/spike relationship has going for it, compared to buffy's other relationships, is it's the most equal. yes they're both going thru some shit and they each make it even harder on the other, and that's definitely unfortunate, but they're each there when the other needs something they can't find anywhere else. it's a big mess, but generally a faultless one.

    • @laurarico1200
      @laurarico1200 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Except they are good for each other, they got to be better, they built their relationship from the ground. It's not good to compare souless Spike with Spike with a soul, its like comparing Angel and Angelus, two completly different people. Spike fought to be better, for Angel it was a punishment.
      Glad to know that even if they broke up in the comic book, they see each other as soulmates.

      @@kathyastrom1315 thats the point through. Its not a happy tale, its a lens on reality. Buffy dates Angel, a bad relationship where she loses herself in it the naivety of first loves. Then Riley, the convenience thing where she does not really feel for him, is just using him. Then Spike, a toxic relationship built out of need and depression, not love, but its toxic on both ends. Thats why the show resonates, its not selling you a fantasy if happily ever after, its dealing with real life and we can all relate to it.

    It's really too bad you couldn't have any of Giles singing at all, he's got the best voice of the cast in my opinion. The actor is actually a musical theater guy. He's played Frankenfurter in Rocky Horror etc. He's got such a good voice they find excuses for him to sing in several other non musical episodes of Buffy as well.

    Hinton Battle played the demon and has won 3 Tony awards, Tony Head has been in musicals and his brother Murray head was in Chess and co wrote some of the songs in the show. This episode is widely acknowledged and voted as the best musical episode of any TV show, as for "mustard man" the guy who sang that was one of the writer/directors of Buffy and Angel (David Fury). Almost 20 yrs on and I still love this episode, glad you enjoyed it.

    You were so delightfully happy at the couch tumble. Did all these songs early in my channel actually but currently doing Buffy Reactor Awards. Up to Episode 8. Do let me know if you decide to react to the series and I'll definitely add you. Only a few reactors have the eye for lighting and film details you have. "Why is every time I'm having fun there a dead person." Because originally this show was a humourous and deep twist on the horror movie genre. You'll definitely love the episodes where it's clear a filmaking/writing style has been taken to a god tier. Giles and Tara were my favorite song. On the dark tone, that's the theme of the season. The consequences of 6 years coming to a head. Have to watch the whole thing to know how and why.

    One of my favourite episodes of a favourite show. Many highlights to choose from, but the shiniest for me is the bridge of 'Through the Fire'. The demon's voice is an undertone and counterpoint to the heroes as each take their turn, but those five notes on "She will come to me...." tie the whole song together.

    Hello. Buffy fan wandering in. I was laughing as you laughed at The Mustard scene. Your laughter is infectious. I loved that even though you didn't have much background info of the show, you went in and seemed to enjoy a lot of the comedy. Some of it and plotlines will go over your head after building for 5+ seasons. This episode had more plot reveals than possibly any other in the entire show. And it seems a happy ending, but it is not. If you enjoyed it, I do recommend the show. As others have said, season 1 is a bit rocky. As far as the music went: the fact Joss wrote the music and lyrics for this is incredible. The actors put this up there with the two hardest episodes. Most of them don't have musical backgrounds, as you noted. I really appreciated that they were not dubbed over with professional singing voices. It would have been obvious and I'd rather they sound like themselves. (And yes, Spike has incredible cheekbones)

    Fun Facts: The dancing demon's name is Sweet and he was portrayed by Hinton Battle, the only person ever to win three Tonys for best featured actor/actress in a musical.
    Tony Head played Frank N. Furter in the 1990-91 West End revival of The Rocky Horror Show at London's Piccadilly Theatre.
    James Marsters, who plays Spike, is American. In an interview he said that he modeled his British accent after the real life accent of Tony Head.

    I think you might have confused Dawn and Terra a little bit (understandable since you haven't seen the show). Dawn (the little sister) didn't sing much solo because her actress wasn't as comfortable singing, but she had a background in ballet, which is why she got her beautiful dance number 😊 The actors for Terra, Giles, and Spike all have a singing/musical background, so that's why they sounded so good (and why they were given a lot of the more complex songs/parts in group songs). The other person who wasn't comfortable with singing was Alyson Hannigan (Willow). It's why she doesn't get a song and after watching a ton of times I realized all of her solo lines are jokes, meaning the quality doesn't have to be there to do it's job (get a laugh).
    While Joss Whedon seems to be a pretty awful person, I did respect that he was able to let the people shine who could in this episode. I would recommend the series, like others. The first season is very campy, but I like that kind of thing, so it wasn't a problem for me to watch. For some reason, I have a sneaking suspicion you might like camp, too 😉

    The lyrics are outstanding. The thing that sets this musical episode apart from most is the plot development through the songs. Most musical episodes don’t do that. Also if you listen to the lyrics when they kiss it actually isn’t all that happy. “This isn’t real, but I just want to feel.” Is what she sings right before she kisses him.

    This musical is about depression -- Buffy's meh about being in "hell" (alive in a demon infested world after having been dragged out of heaven), manipulation (Tara under Willow's literal spell to forget the fight they'd had over Willow's addiction to magic), trying to protect each other's feelings (Xander & Anya forced to feel what they'd "never tell"), Giles feeling unneeded (song about whether he should leave); & attempted suicide (demon compels Buffy to reveal where she'd been rescued from, followed by her suicide attempt/death dance).
    Of *course* they're not happy at the end! Buffy was forced to reveal the truth she'd been protecting her friends from & had tried to commit suicide in front of them. Tara's left wondering how many of her decisions were really *her* decisions & not thoughts put in her head by Willow, Spike's revealed how obsessed he is with Buffy, Anya & Xander told each other their misgivings. You want them to be HAPPY in the final ensemble????
    While you were so giddy, did you at least notice the plotlines that came to a head in the sung dialogue, & the new ones that began?

    I would recommend a reaction to the two musical episodes of Xena Warrior Princess, but Universal is one that usually goes after any videos that they didn't officially post themselves. I have seen some Xena reactors get away with dialogue from the episodes, but not video. Still I'd recommend watching them some time, if you haven't seen them already. The first one is season three's The Bitter Suite with all original music. The second one, is Lyre, Lyre Hearts On Fire in season five, which has covers of songs. They had considered doing a third one in the final season, but couldn't clear all of the music rights for the songs they wanted to use in time.
