  • In this video Review I test and review the Cold Steel Recon Scout. This is one of Cold Steel's classics and a hard one to beat. This model is in CPM3V and its THICCC... but still quite a capable survival/combat knife for sure.

    Great knife! When drawing from sheath, keep pressure on the spine when drawing. The sheath will dull your blade. All knives should be drawn like this, even with leather. Stops grit and muck dulling the blade!

    I have one of these, a Laredo Bowie, and the SRK all in 3V. I have an O1 Trailmaster already, but I think I'll grab the Trailmaster in 3V as well. They're all outstanding knives.Not sure if I'll get the Natchez Bowie or not. I love the look, but the tang isn't as tough on it. I'll probably end up with it because I collect Bowies, but I'll get it last.

      Heck yeah, nice collection ya got there! I really want the Japan made San Mai VG1 version with the convexed edge on it, well actually if I'm being honest what I really want is the 3V trailmaster but with the same convex edge as the San Mai Vg1 😂 now thaaaat would be one badass blade! Till then I guess my Bark river shining mountain bowie will reign as king that or my 52100 Blackjack version of the same blade.... Ehhh I couldn't ever pick just one but feel if I had the trailmaster then it might be an easier choice haha

      Just found my old Recon Scout I got in 2004 or 2005. Wondering if it's Carbon V. Hate the fact that it says Taiwan which I actually scratched off when I got it. Replaced it with the Ontario RD6 and RD9 with The Knife Connection G10 handle scales. Also found an old rare SP49 which could be a great bowie upon further inspection. Although not 1/4" thick like the Recon Scout and RD's, it is a saber grind and big chunk of 5160 steel. Also have a Becker BK9 which I now don't like because of the stupid skeletonized handle tang.

    I had a Carbon V Recon Scout from back in the late 80s early 90s. I liked it, enjoyed it but one day up in a tree stand, there was a 3" or 4" branch in my way and so I started chopping it, and chopping and chopping until I figured I'd ran off every deer within ear shot. It had a great convex edge and stayed very sharp for a long time. But I could never forget how long it took to take out that branch. To be honest, I would not have wanted one in Viet Nam. Way too heavy and thick to my way of thinking. I traded it off for a bow for a grandson. There are many knives that will out chop these 5/16 Cold Steels. But, they are still fun to have and I always liked that handle, but over time, they tend to lose a piece or two of that nice soft material. Enjoy, you do have a nice knife, esp with that CPM3V.

    Great video and review of a badass knife! I own the O1 tool steel version and have been tossing around the idea of adding this 3V scout and trailmaster to my collection! What I'd really like to get is the Japan made San Mai VG1 trailmaster that has the beautiful convexed edge and no secondary bevels no V-grind at all but it is difficult to know for sure exactly which one you'll be shipped when purchasing so atleast with the 3V model you know what you're getting and would have to convex it yourself to get the same performance....

    Since watching this video, I've done some thinking about things. Cold Steel have an interesting lineup in larger knives - at the top there is the Trail Master, then the Recon Scout, then the Master Hunter and then the SRK! That's a bewildering array of cutting power, and my initial thought was, "Of course I want all 4!" So, I naturally ordered the Trail Master and took delivery.
    I was not really prepared for what I got! The thing is an absolute beast! Yet, it fits my hand beautifully, is completely balanced and work becomes fun using it. I tried it out on some dry oak and couldn't believe the cutting power!
    So, why would I need anything else? Good question, and one that has vexed me ever since.
    Now, let's take the SRK - this one I can see having a place as it is small enough to fit in at the bottom for the lighter end of the work spectrum, and at a push even some food prep stuff.
    The Master Hunter - as often said, this knife is one of few CS knives that is a specialist knife, designed to be used by hunters for dressing carcasses, and I'm pretty sure it does a great job there. As I don't hunt any more, that eliminates the Hunter.
    Now, the Recon Scout - same basic stock, same handle, same basic shape, but loses 2 1/2 inches in blade length. With the perfectly balanced Trail Master in mind (and in hand as I sit here) I'm asking "How could the Recon Scout also be balanced as well?" The answer of course is, it can't. It will be balanced differently [I have the same issue with the ESEE 5 and 6.] The inevitable conclusion was forced on me that the two knives appear to be mutually exclusive - you choose which one you want, and forget about the other one. I think if I did buy the Recon Scout, I'd always be just that little bit disappointed. So, no I won't ever have one. [Note: I wonder what would have been the case if I had bought the Recon Scout first? Hmmmm interesting conundrum I'll never have the answer to!]
    Cheers mate!

      @@thelasthuntsmanoutdoors Oh, absolutely! It's even worse than buying a car! Buying the Trail Master was a 100% indulgence! About 30 years ago I made myself a big knife, and used it ever since. Then one day, after viewing Rob Evans's videos I decided I needed to fulfill a dream I'd had since I started making knives and when the Trail Master hit the shelves, but could never justify the expense. Then all that changed and I bought it!

    • @MTMILITIAMAN7.62
      @MTMILITIAMAN7.62 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I concur. I think I would prefer the Trailmaster as well for similar reasons. Basically, the Recon Scout seems more specialized as a fighting knife because it retains the basic blade profile of the Trailmaster, but is a couple inches shorter. Keeping that long clip up front with the false edge on the swedge means that you only have a few inches of working spine near the hilt, which limits the size of the tinder you can baton, if nothing else. The Trailmaster being longer means it has more working spine in addition to being a better chopper. This makes the Trailmaster more of a master on the trail and a more fearsome fighting knife because you get more reach and power. The Recon Scout therefore seems redundant, like they took all the best parts of the Trailmaster out and tried to fill a similar niche without the advantages. I would love one of those Trailmasters in 3V, but I might be biased, because I have always loved bowies.
