    I really don't understand why people complain about being in the navy. It's an amazing opportunity to serve your country and better yourself and you also get to see the world. I can only hope that I'm accepted in. This would take me out of my poor paying retail job and give me the chance to focus all my potential in a good career not to mention the opportunity to go to school. I'm Mexican but America has given me soo much, I would be honored to serve this amazing country that has given me all the opportunities to succeed. My older sibling are in the navy and now it's my turn I waited years to finally take the plunge, I wanted to make sure this was for me and I'm here now and I can only hope to come out being even better than I could of ever thought for myself.

      Teresa Mills Because people jump into it without really thinking about what it entails, or just get in the environment and realize its not for them, or they have a poor command/chain of command that sours them, or a combination thereof. I got lucky halfway through my first tour to get a new boss that was wonderful and gain some rank and enjoy the privledges thereof that turned me around.

    I fought for my MA rating. I was at DEP for three days calling the recruiters on their lies. The job was available and I knew it was available yet the recruiters were telling me it wasn't. After tireless hours of negotiating, reasoning, and at some points arguing, they finally gave in. It is your life folks, not theirs.

    My career path is Law Enforcement & Security in Masters at Arms. Loves traveling lots and never want to go back home. No worries because one rule that I have is "take it or leave it." Got lots of friends who are in the Navy and Marines still.

    Some good videos. I served 1990 to 1996 in the fast attack sub fleet out of San Diego. I went to boot in Illinois and I was in pretty weak shape. I made it through, of course, but it would have been less difficult if I had been in shape for sure. My stepdad at the time game me the advise to just keep in mind that the whole "abuse" thing in boot camp was just a mind game to make sailors stronger and weed out those too frail for military service and that helped a lot mentally. I recall that boot sucked, but knowing what it was about made it easier to tolerate.

    My dad was a Seabee. I would always ask him what it was like on a ship and he would laugh and say he was never on one. Me being a kid I thought he was lying because in my mind every one in the Navy is on a ship.

    When I joined, I knew that I wanted to be a Sonarman (surface, no subs). I'm a multi-instrumentalist, so I've been really into audio production since I was 16 years old. After my ASVAB, Sonar is exactly what they recommended for me (even though I never gave a single hint that that was what I really wanted to do).
    Even though I got the exact rating that I wanted and was entirely qualified for, it was nowhere near the job that I thought it would be. It wasn't even close to it at all!

    awesoman09 you should enable replies when you ask questions, pro tip.
    Nuclear Machinist Mate is pretty cool rate to me, if you got the brain/math power for it (I certainly don't). You got two years of school ahead of you, you'll require a top secret clearance and you'll work on nuclear reactor engines. That's about all I know. Oh, and you'll get paid pretty well (nuclear program and submarine pay bonuses) and Nuke MMs make rank pretty quickly.

      +The Salty Seaman Hey I am 17 and I want to join the military as most of the men in my family have served and I do not wish to end the tradition, but I have a few questions. I want to do either Physical Therapy or a government career when my contract expires, but does the Navy have any jobs that can further my education and experience for these fields? I also wish to see combat, will I see any in the Navy or should I join a different branch? Even if it is boarding Somalian hijacked ships, I have seen them in a few documentaries, what would the name of the people boarding those ships be, and what should I do to do such a job? If not, which branch is best for me to see combat as well as further my experience in a career field that I wish to pursue after my service? Thanks in advance.

    • @TheSaltySeaman
      @TheSaltySeaman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to see combat and want be in the medical field, I'd recommend Fleet Marine Force Corpsman in the Navy or Army Medic.

    • @PKPK-rr3rs
      @PKPK-rr3rs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Salty Seaman Cool thanks, last question, are there any medic roles in the Navy, or combat roles in the Navy? I have always been intrigued by the Navy, and I would prefer to join the Navy instead of other branches. Thanks.

    • @TheSaltySeaman
      @TheSaltySeaman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PK PK as said, Navy Corpsman is a medic role. If you do it with the marines it's combat medic, we just say corpsman instead of medic.
      Seals, EOD, fast boat, brown water...plenty of combat roles in the navy.

    I made the mistake of letting my recruiter choose my rate. They don't choose based on your interests, they choose based on what the navy is currently short on and I think they even get some kind of bonus for putting people in rates that are not very popular. I ended up as a Hull Maintenance Technician. It wasn't bad but I would have been better off in a tech rate such as IT

    Pretty helpful ... My process is taking so long. First It took me 2 months to make weight. Then went to meps passed medical and got a 73 on asvab but had to get medical records for broken wrist which took 2 weeks and turned it in now its been almost 2 more weeks and I haven't heard from them yet! I'm going for IT as my first choice for rate , or maybe LS or CTM .

    • @TheSaltySeaman
      @TheSaltySeaman  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LS seems a bit odd when your other two choices are IT and CTM. And yes, when you have waivers the process takes forever. I came back in after a break in services and waited three months for a waiver to keep my E4.

    • @BassHead787
      @BassHead787 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Salty Seaman well those are just some of the few I've heard of and researched ,still haven't gotten to see all my options and choose. How long do you think I'll be in dep ? Hopefully I leave somewhat soon.

    • @BassHead787
      @BassHead787 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Salty Seaman what do you recommend? Lookin to sign a 4 year contract. I wanna do something not too stressful ; was thinking it cause I'm good with computers and such. But I'm open to anything... I don't want something too Boring However

    • @TheSaltySeaman
      @TheSaltySeaman  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CTM or any CT job would probably be the best for you...it's mentally challenging but the bonuses are good, as long as you can qualify for a Top Secret (IT also). CTN is also really great, it's IT but for cryptos, but no ship billets (depending if seeing the world is part of your reason for joining).
      I can't speak for how long it'll take...be honest, may be a few more months. MEPS moves slow.

    Thank you Salty Seamen for your insight and knowledge. I have a few very unique questions that seem to be taboo for many to address. I hope you can shed some insight into a possible career in the Navy for myself. There are quite a few jobs the Navy has to offer. I believe over 150 unique chooses. I understand how important it is to pick something that you enjoy, because, as you have already stated it is what you do 90% of the time. However, I wanted to attack this issue from a different point of view. I want to apply 3 filters to my job choice. By applying theses 3 filters I believe I can find a handful of jobs that fit what I am trying to do.
    Filter 1:
    Of the 150 or more job choices, what ones give me the best percentage chance to have a full 20-30 year career in the Navy? Once again thank you for your help, but please don't tell me the company line the recruits do such as "All of them it is up to you" This is BS and we all know it. Obviously some jobs are geared to have high turnover and others are designed for longer careers this is what I am looking for here. For example, you may say theses 50 are high turnover so eliminate them, theses 50 are a 50/50 mix so forget about them as well. Of what is left theses 15 give you a 90% or better chance and theses other 10 give you a 80% or better chance. So then we move the top 25 jobs that give us a 80% or better chance on to filter number 2. This is what I am looking for here.
    Filter 2:
    Now taking whatever jobs are left after filter 1. What ones give me the best percentage chance to stay active duty for my entire career without having to go the reserves at all? For example, you may say only 5 of theses 25 fit what you are looking for. Then we move onto filter 3.
    Filter 3:
    Of the handful of jobs that are left after the first two filters. What one or ones give me the best percentage chance to be stationed abrade for all or most of my career without ever having to be in the continental United States?
    A re-cap
    1. Full 20+ year career
    2. Stay active duty
    3. Stationed abrade for all or most of my career.
    After applying theses 3 filters I believe I could find something that fits me well. Thank you very much Salty Seamen.

    • @TheSaltySeaman
      @TheSaltySeaman  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the Cryptological Technician ratings probably. High turnover means better advancement for those that want to stay in. Those that want to stay overseas in those fields could probably do so easily, although as always there's no garauntees, especially your first duty station, where you don't get any choice (although you put in your "dream sheet" and they do often look to match those trying to be overseas).

      +Chad Barker - ClassyAct It's an accessable rate to come in as, but after you're in, keeping it is tougher, for some. Being the police you have to keep your nose clean, slip up and go see "The Man" you're going to lose the rating and have to do something else, at least last I knew.

    What was your MOS? I'm pretty sure you showed a MC patch on this video. Thats what I want to do, but I honestly haven't found much online and the navy's website is a joke when it comes to learning about the MOS's. I went to ask my recruiter but he said, and I quote, "I'm not here to sell you a certain job, I'm here to sell you the Navy." He wouldn't talk to me at all about it afterwords.

    • @TheSaltySeaman
      @TheSaltySeaman  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jack Blegen Yeah, I'm an MC, we call them ratings not MOS's. The recruiter isn't going to have detailed knowledge of every rating; that's just impossible. If they're good, they're going to research and get back to you. But he is essentially right, if a poor salesmen.

    Great Video Salty Seaman, I have so many questions I am actually an FTS and scheduled to ship out for Basic in Oct. (although there is a push for me to ship out earlier) I am an older recruit (38), what will basic be like for someone like me as opposed to these young high school grads? My rate is LS what is the likelihood of me ending up on a ship or being relocated (currently I am in Ga)? How long is it before my family is also relocated? Can I be placed overseas as my first duty station? I have every intention of making this career (20yrs) I come in as an E3 will I be able to advance beyond this before reaching my first duty station? As you can see I am truly excited at this journey I am about to embark on and my husband (retired Army) and children are equally excited.

      +bigzachful AO's are tough dudes/gals, they handle missles and bombs for the planes. They're an interesting, if slightly crazy, bunch. DCmen are the firefighters. Both jobs are pretty blue collar/hard work type things. If that's your style, then you'd like them. You would almost be certain to be a on a ship with either (AO would most likely be on a carrier tho, DCs are on all ships).

      It's possible but it's hard. They already have you slotted once you're in boot camp and they don't want to give up that slot. If you're dead set on being Air Crew, I suggest you put boot camp on hold until they can give you the job you want. Nothing is set in stone until you raise your hand in MEPS before you ship off.

      What was formerly known as the Corpsman rate (HM) for enlisted or doctor or nurse for officer. Your recruiter will point you in the right direction. From there you can choose a specialty if any. For officer, you need the required degrees and can get them on your own then try to join or talk to an officer recruiter about going ROTC at college and have the Navy pay for your degree.

    Salty Seaman thank you for your help. Do you have a e-mail you don't mind sharing? I have a few questions regarding how the Navy works that I don't want to make public if this is ok with you?

      Benefits? Military benefits are the same across the board. It's the type of work you want to do and the service environment you want.

      For the Diesel Technician yes. Then use your GI Bill to get an engineering degree.

    Listen to this man, don't be a buds dud coming to the seabees trying to make PT more difficult haha Don't be that dainty and feminine female who becomes a bee and has no idea life is digging holes, swinging a hammer and fod walk downs.

    Here is some good advice.......Just Don't Join The Navy as enlisted. Go officer all the way.
    Your life will still suck, but not nearly as bad as an enlisted. Or better yet, skip the military and go to university or a trade school.
