I'm so very sad that I never knew about this wonderful man while he was still living. He had a tremendous sense of humor, was so down to earth. He seemed to really have a grasp on what mattered in life.

Jana you created a piece of entertainment here that outclasses so many other rather static efforts. You did us a great service in capturing this man just as he was in our time. Your choice of material and composition made for a truly viewable work. Be proud.

    What a gut punch.
I look to see how a great old friend is posting and find out he’s gone.
We played a lot of rock and roll in the 80’s.
He was principal writer for a truly wonderful band called The Norm back in the day.
    Can’t believe it.

It's so nice to unwind and have someone give a tour of their listening setup. Art was refreshingly modest and down-to-Earth, with exquisite taste in gear and music. I hope someone in his family has or will finish that Thorens TD 124 base in memory of him. May he rest in peace and my thoughts are with his family.

Thanks for posting this one... It reminds me that being an ‘audiophile’ doesn’t have to be complicated. I think we’ve missed and/or diluted the whole point of this hobby, hence the definition of ‘audiophile’.

Room acoustic treatments are not "band-aids," Art. "It probably makes a difference," you say? No, it "does" make a difference. In the fact, the room is the elephant in the room. It's the most important "component" in the audio chain. A good, acoustically treated room can make an inexpensive (but good quality) amplifier sound exquisite. I know, I've done it. And the money I save by not needing to pay for expensive equipment buys a lot of music.

The mono recording of the John Deere lawn tractor is paramount. Listen closely and the whirring of the fan belt pulley under the cutting deck is subtly evident in mono. Why would anyone prefer the stereophonic version of this recording? Now back to Art Dudley. I miss you, RIP

Wow, what a breath of fresh air. I use to have a lot of audio equipment and worked at one time in the audio industry for three audio equipment manufacturers. Lately I have been amazed by what's happening with Hifi...$250,000 turntables, $680,000 speakers...ridiculous and completely out of my league. I wish I had kept some of my old equipment like my Sony TTS3000 turntable with SME 3012 turntable or my Dunlap-Clark Dreadnaught 1000 stereo amplifier with Levinson JC-2 Preamp. The problem with spending hundreds of thousands on audio gear is that you have to have a lot of free-time to enjoy it and to justify the expenditure. With kids playing sports and kids in college and a couple of large pets who need to be exercised, time is limited. Thanks for your practical, down-to-earth approach. I truly believe in reaching the point of diminishing returns such that in order to see an significant improvement in sound, one has to spend possibly 10x, or 20x, or 30x...still blown away by a $250,000 turntable..Hell that's a Porsche Boxter with $200K left over. The British "Room Heater" reminded me of a Quad Electrostatic loudspeaker or possibly a Dahlquist DQ10.

    • @johnhpalmer6098

I agree. Michael borders on the obnoxious. Also, I think is endearing Art's odd taste for junk mono equipment, unlike Fremer who thinks that if it doesn't cost over a hundred thousand dollars it's not worth purchasing.

You’re making me so sad that I got rid of my Garrard 301 around 15 years ago to replace it with someone more “modern”, but vastly inferior. Nice plinth! At the time I originally got my 301, I had a student job working in a fibreglass factory (they made race car body kits and hovercraft). So I made a wooden plinth with a fibreglass base and lid.

No real controversy in audio. You hear what you hear, you like what you like, nothing else should matter. Especially someone else’s authoritarian ego. Always someone willing to tell you what to think and believe if you let them. And in audio, what you can and can’t hear. How absurd is that. Great video Art. Thanks.

I like vintage Altec's. I have owned Madrid's and Valencia's (since sold). Presently have Santana's, Segovia's, Stonehenge's and Bolero's. Plus a pair of 604's and a pair of 755E's (waiting for cabinets). I have always liked the lively, punchy sound of Altec's (and JBL's). For a different sound I have electrostatics: Quad 57's (two pairs), KLH Nines, and Janzen 130 tweeters. Amplification includes: Futterman H3aa Mono's and a Futterman Harvard Music stereo OTL - among many other vintage tube and transistor amps! And yes, I still collect and listen to LP's on Ariston RD11S and Linn Sondek tt's (with mc cartridges, of course!).
