If she wasn't really worried, she wouldn't have gone to several doctors even after being told by several pediatricians that her baby is fine. She's acutely aware of her baby's cry that is "different" and that's really amazing.

Makes me think- maybe because it doesn't stress her out, she has higher capacity to hear the subtle nuances in her sons crying? I know when my kids cry for longer periods of time it drives me nuts, because i don't know what's Wrong with them And how to help them... Maybe without that anxiety that's basically shuttingn down her brain she can be more observant....

If they wanted to portray her as emotionless they should have done a way better job because the message I was getting is that she should be bawling or hysterical. Some people are just calm or chill in those situations and it has nothing to do with genetic abnormalities with pain. More of the show on this one. But, you're 100% right on Manning she's so judgemental espically with mother's or just women in general. I actually hate her character so much I don't watch the show. It's fine for a doctor to be judgemental as long as they grow and learn from it. From what I see she never learns her lesson and conitues to gossip and judge particularly mother's. Like in House I remember Chase abosultly despising obese and overweight people, he was super judgemental of them. But, he eventually grew from that and no longer judged them as harshly. He had more compassion toward them and did t jump to conclusions as much. Manning from what I see never grows an inch. That's the main reason I just can't stand the show.

The mother can feel happiness and all the other emotions. Her lack of concern about causing discomfort or pain to her baby came from a lack of awareness of pain or discomfort being a thing that exists.
It is fear of pain, of hurt, of suffering, that can lead to anxiety and stress.
Without serious pain, risk of injury is no longer as fearful. It becomes nothing more than a situation to be avoided or a problem that needs to be solved. You do what you need to do to heal and move on.
She is perfectly capable of feeling emotion and empathy but she wouldn't understand that the circumstances warranted any. After all, to her, injury is experienced as nothing more than an persistent tingling sensation. Think about it. Why would you feel any need to empathize with someone who was experiencing a mild tingling sensation?

I live with crohn's and I can tell you, yes it is excruciating. Cannot eat anything more then a child's portion without throwing up, have horrible cramps, bowel movements are a pain. I have to punch my legs when I go to the bathroom because the pain is too much and once I clenched my teeth so hard for the excruciating pain one of my molars broke. I have a fever every single night... I shiver, have coughing vomit fits... you have no idea. And I have to change my doctor because my doctor is a vegan crazy lady who doesn't believe in giving me medicine except cortisone which makes me have headaches, joint pain and makes me swell up like a balloon. She says the vegan diet will solve my problems. She doesn't even believe giving me iron supplements is good even though blood tests clearly show I am severely anemic. I called up a hospital which had a doctor specialized in my disease and I am trying to get an appointment but they are busy and I don't know when they will be free... feel lucky you don't have to deal with this disease, it is horrible.

Eh, I get that she's a mother herself and she knows a mother's love is special, but I don't like how she projects and thinks everyone is like her or they're weird. For all she knew, Axel's mom could have been the type of person to not display emotions. She could've been crying alone in the bathroom, not wanting to show weakness. She could have been so worried that she couldn't react at all. So yeah, the doctor was right this time but I hate how she projects.

I would never be so judgemental about someone's emotional stability or instability, especially when faced with traumatic circumstances; you make notes of your observations and then you make rational connections based on facts and experiences that correlate with your notes and observations to reach logical conclusions...but you should never bring your personal biases or emotions into forming opinions and diagnoses of patients.
Dr. Manning is obviously professional...however she draws her conclusions quickly with heavy bias involved...I am glad to see that in this case, though she was judgemental, she put her work before her personal biases...just this once.

Not having emotions sucks. And it can really damage any social connections. I occasionally depersonalise and lose my emotions and it makes it so much more difficult to interact normally with others. Emotions, even just small glimpses of emotions, are critical to normal communication and to even build any sort of attachment to others. Normal people feel happy when interacting with friends/partners or when doing things they love. I you can't feel happy those things just feel like pointless formalities.
