    When finding a partner I think it is super important to find someone that will always support your dreams and goals. Kelsey has been through a lot of changes in my career over the last few years and has always given me unwavering support. It was fun to share my love of disc golf with her and to spend the afternoon out on the course. We recently have been bringing out our 2 corgis on the course to make it a family affair. Hopefully this video will inspire you to share disc golf with a loved one. Keep Slinging Em!

      Just have Kelsey step slightly forward with her lead (right) leg, and she will have a much easier time pulling that disc on a straight line. You want the heel of your right foot to be in line with the toe of your left foot when your legs are shoulder-width apart. Also one final easy thing you can teach her, tell her to pretend she is trying to elbow someone in the chest during her throw, because that helps people lead with their elbow and create the whip effect with their arm.

      I think something that will help with the nose angle is having the disc swing out of your hand using the pivot/pinch point between your thumb and pointer finger.

    Good tip for fixing "nose down", which is really just flat, is to tell a new player to throw the disc on the same plane as the fairway. Also set the angle out in front of you on where you want the disc to actually come out of your hand (anny, flat, high, low etc.). If you set it on the right angle there, it's easier to focus on getting back to that spot. It is really hard to learn by telling someone to "keep the nose down". The most important part of a throw with a disc is the angle its on when it leaves your hand. Also to throw flatter, stand taller with more weight on your heels than toes.
    Another way to fix hyzer angle issues for new players is to teach them to throw rollers. Rollers force you to pop the disc on the anny angle or it will just hyzer out. Roll it into the ground, then tone it back little by little until you have the flex line. It's a lot easier to learn an over-exaggerated anny and work back to flat, than it is to throw flat and work to an anny.

  • @Chaser90EK
    @Chaser90EK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Kelsey's first throw is in the top 1% of first disc golf throws...I'm jelly. Also if you putters and mids nose up it's not too bad because they are meant to glide. Nose down is more for drivers because they are cutting through air more than gliding.

    After watching this video today, I took my discs to the nearest park and tried to follow the steps you outlined here. I immediately began throwing farther and straighter than I ever have before, and from a standstill. Thank you for explaining it in such a simple way. I'm going to the course this Saturday and I will update this comment with how much of an improvement I've made using your instruction. Thanks again.

    Brodie, you are doing great. Welcome to disc golf Kelsey.
    Focus areas, I have seen a lot of poeple starting into disc golf,
    1 Roundong the disc instead of pulling.
    2 Reaching behind the body,
    3 the hips is where most of your power will start.

    • @JoeSmith-lr3fo
      @JoeSmith-lr3fo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I've learned that at first the best way to throw is the way that's comfortable for you and just learn your lines but also adjust your throw at the same time

    • @iphviva
      @iphviva 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, you can notice that when she starts to throw, her elbow stays static/straight and the disc travels in straight line from peak of her reachback to the moment it slips out of her hand to left side, it's still flying in that same line. She is reaching too far and behind her body, causing her to round. It's gonna be hard to correct nose angle if that isn't corrected first.

    • @EugeeFGII
      @EugeeFGII 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This. It's called "rounding", and how you throw a frisbee. Need to pull straight through leading with the elbow (which you do now Brodie). The motion is like pull-starting a mower that's up on a table.

  • @natenelson6372
    @natenelson6372 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love how dedicated you have become in this sport Brodie! One tip that may help her out would be to have her weight more forward when throwing. Keeping the weight on the back foot has a tendency to lift the front shoulder up, causing the nose up hyzer stall. Keep up the great work!

  • @neroschnee7698
    @neroschnee7698 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You guys are killing it!

  • @eminence_
    @eminence_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Okay, here is a tip for both of you. Bring the front foot forward. Not closer to the basket but the edge of the tee pad. This creates more space for the upper body to rotate. Could fix the nose up problem too as she was dipping the disc mid pull.

  • @houstonwolfe3472
    @houstonwolfe3472 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey man I never comet on stuff but if you tell her to pull strait though but start with her hand high it helps some new players throw lower and flat. And instead of nose down maybe say wrist rolled down? Different things click for different people. I love disc golf and have loved your videos and I’m happy you’re getting into it seriously!!

She was pissed at first, then fell in love. We have been disc golfing now for 5 years. Your approach is much less sink or swim, good job.

  • @1989DiscGolfer
    @1989DiscGolfer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try a Stratus. They're slow and very very understable. I carry one for short distance sharp backhand turnovers and trick forehand rollers when I'm stuck in the woods. My 10-year-old son uses a lighter weight Stratus for straight drives (I think it's 161g). They're not for everybody, though, because of how shallow they are, but when you're brand new like Kelsey is you want something that has a greater tendency to go straight with less spin...which is understable.
    Welcome to Disc Golf!

    I imagine you might have been bombarded about this... But. There is a company called Flightowel. They fob disc golf towels with the flight wing of a disc so you can use the towel as warm up practice. What I do since I still do standstill shots, I draw my arm straight across and whip the disc. A snap facilitates an impact of force against the wing to slide the rotations faster from ignition. The more rotations, especially for a flipper disc can and will activate it's turn from the ignitions. One great way to practice the standstill draw is to face a mirror, or, record what you're doing to alter for consistent muscle memory. Even so, her first throw was very good.

  • @Silver_Creek_Aquatics
    @Silver_Creek_Aquatics 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Release, ideally should he between 9 and 10 o'clock. A cool way I learned to get consistent snap was by pushing outward after you engage the hips, from the disc being in the tuck position. Like an outward arc from right above your core. Paul does this as well as every other top pro. The pull is just engaging the shoulders to keep up with the hips. Then is the outward push to release at that optimal 9 to 10 o'clock. If this help, cool. Sometimes hearing or reading it a different way helps things "click".

  • @BigRed1654
    @BigRed1654 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, something that I have used to help my wife is to have her pick a target towards the hole but 100+ ft away and on the ground. I then use the cue for her to throw through that target, this keeps her body and her arms from rising. Maybe trying to find a cue like that for Kelsey will help her throw more level and help keep the nose at a more level trajectory.

  • @JonBrakel
    @JonBrakel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kelsey is dropping her left shoulder during her throw which is causing the upward trajectory. Her trailing leg, left leg, is also sometimes dropping. Not sure if one is causing the other but the non throwing shoulder drop is common for people coming from throwing frisbees.

    Untuck your pinky when you're putting. All it does is make the release more difficult to do consistently. There's a reason Ricky and Paul (arguably the best putters) don't do this. It feels strange at first but it's better. People will tell you it's a preference, but it's significantly more consistent than the pinky tuck putt.
    Power grip for everything else!

    She should keep bend in her elbo when throwing. It's similar to the motion of starting a lawnmower. Well at least a gasoline engine lawnmower with a pull start that is. Also a good way to get here to keep the nose of the disc down is... To aim at a spot on the ground and continue to aim for a closer spot until she finds the correct angle of release.

  • @MikeDoran
    @MikeDoran 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instead of nose down the disc also needs to be angled to the right for beginners. Released on an angle to the right the disc will get it's full flex and flight. She's doing great so far! Y'all are playing some of my home courses. I've been playing Disc Golf in the DFW area for about 25 years. I would love to join up with y'all for a round. I used to do disc golf photography and video as well so I'd be glad to help out with that too.

  • @CharlesJWillard

    Elbow below shoulder and hand below elbow = easy nose down for level and hyper shots. Kelsey is getting her hand above elbow before release which makes it impossible to get the nose down.

    Pretty good distance for her first time. And the approach shots were on point!

    You should try having her make sure when she throws she has all of her weight on her right foot it will help with power from the left foot push/weight transfer and it will make her throw more nose down as well i noticed when i was having problems with nose up when i was throwing easy it was because I wasnt getting transfering to standing on my front foot

    Paul and Kelsey vs Brodie and Hannah, that would be a fun doubles... Required to take at least one shot from each partner each hole. So there is some strategy as to when certain shots would be taken even if its not the best. I don't know, something like that sounds fun.

    So good. Was wondering if Kelsey was gonna jump in with you. She’s a trooper. Great progress Brodie.

    Great content Brodie! Keep it up! Not sure if you read these, but one quick suggestion if I may - it looks like Kelsey doesn't actually have her pointer finger under the lip of the disc. Is that intentional? Almost every grip (power or fan) for driving is going to have your pointer finger as the release point, holding snuggly under the rim. I think that may be contributing to the nose up and early releases.

    I think the heat and the Buzzzes are in the Z plastic, not the Big Z. Normal Z is usually somewhat transparent, whereas Big Z is not

    Straddle putting may not be suitable for beginners outside 40ft. You really have to adjust for speed in a straddle stance. If I could suggest, for upshots 50ft+ stand shoulder to shoulder, no need for run up. And practice spin putting. Your hips will push your putt further and me personally I like to use a driver grip, which helps the spin putt be more effective and will also add a couple more feet to your shot.

    Well, that was an amazing first throw from Kelsey. Great basic lessons. Things are looking up in the Smith discgolf world :-) … One of the things that I've noticed improves throwing drastically is the follow through (with the hips and left leg). You do it (some) Kelsey does it not.. That also usually takes care of the nose-up-hyzer thing. Follow through! Lean a little forwards, not backwards.

    Wrist down or forward thumb parallel to forearm the more perpendicular the more nose up angle

    Glad to see her wanting to learn! If she gets the right molds and learns a little bit more technique, she will crush!! And there’s not enough female disc golfers as it is.
    Awesome to see you out there!!
