I won’t forget my Aunt now 60 blasting this song in the Red Vauxhall Astra she drove at the time back in 1991 when driving on the A449 in Wombourne (Staffordshire) from the house near Wolverhampton where she lived at the time to my Grandparents house in Kingswinford near Dudley.
I heard this for the first time standing on a hill in Oxfordshire with several hundred people as the sun came up, the surrounding valleys full of mist, distant hills, copses and churches pushing through the mist lit by gold, I can still see it. This song takes me there, music - the highest artform.

During the several weeks it was number one in the UK singles charts, we made a pact one day to place hi-fi speakers in the windows and play it at full volume when it was announced on the BBC Radio 1 chart show. Many others listened in the square. Needless to say, the staff were less than pleased and confiscated dozens of stereo systems. Totally worth it!
Released in Australia around September 1989 it took it's time to head up the chart. Peaking at No 2. early in 1990, to become one of the biggest hits of that year! The albums spawned 5 top 40 Singles in Australia. Their Album dreamland also took its time. It finally peaked at No 1 in early 1991. Then gone.. they were never to be heard from again.

I get what you saying. If it was out in 1989 then it wouldn't have been played throughout the 80s but it would have been played when it was... from release onwards and mostly in the 90s. It is an 80a release but it isn't really associated with the 80s because like I said it wasn't played at all during the 80s cuz it obviously didn't exist. So 90s song I would say it is.

I don't know about that. Even just as an instrumental, this is one of the best and most banging Dance tracks of all time. That pumping beat, funky bassline and catchy piano chord riff would earn it an instant #1 ... especially back when this was originally released when dance instrumentals were very commonly released. The fact that it ALSO happens to have some of the most powerful vocals included on top of an already top tune is the icing on this classic cake.

Not to knock this track, which I really like, but it says something about the system that the singer basically got nix, the copyright owner to the song she she originally sang on (sampled for this) got paid and Black Box got well paid. Hard not to feel that exploitation is even worse if you are a relatively uneducated, poor, minority and female as well.
