Volkswagen camper

  • I am sorry I didn't leave a description sooner. This is a custom trailer built from scratch by my father. It has an official title issued by the state of Illinois. The hitch is made from 1/2" plate steel curved to match the roof-line and bolted into the roof rails with a backing plate. The ball hitch is a standard trailer ball. The wiring has enough slack for a full turn, simply unplugging it with allow unlimited rotation. It has a backup camera so when it is being pushed the driver can see what is going on. It was built based on the original but not exactly. It pulls down the road just fine. It is a lightweight trailer so the fact it is roof mounted is not a big issue. He was happy just building it but no longer needs it and it is for sale. $14,000 with the car.

Like a fifth wheeler but smaller. Nose weight is pushing down centrally on the car so all four wheels have better traction. Super maneuverable no issues spinning in a small area. I've seen the original version on YT and it's great to see a modern version here. I'm surprised something like this is not commercially available. I think it would be a big success. Practical car for everyday use and super easy to pull the camper / caravan when needed. I for one would be very interested.

Modern cars don't have a chassis as they did in the 20s - 70's. Almost all today cars are unibody construction now, meaning the strength of the car is actually built right in to the body - and many of those cars have trailer hitches. In order to make modern cars safe for the occupants, a lot of that strength is added in to the roof-rails of the car. The owner here has bolted his mount to those rails. I'd say it's a pretty good place to put it. The big downside is that it's never been tested. Unlike traditional trailer hitches where there have been crash tests with load, none has been done with this design. The only way to know what will happen will be to crash it. The roof-rails are strong, but they were certainly not designed to take a load similar to what a crash would provide. All the same, I think I'd feel fairly safe driving it.
