    You had some really nice grass and weed grown trackage details on this layout. You mention mistakes you made on your first layout. On my first one, I had grades that would have made the RR crew feel like they were on a thrill ride! My most powerful switcher engine - an old metal HO Varney EMD unit - could only pull about six freight cars upgrade. I also wanted to model an old PRR branch that ran near our home where we lived when in my teens back in the 1960s. The RR used Baldwin switchers to power the trains. The branch also had stiff grades and the Baldwins were noticeably working hard if the train exceeded five loaded cars, which they rarely did. Enjoy your modeling tips very much.

    Hi DJ, Yes life seems to change priorities from time to time. I've had to put the Long Valley Branch into storage because of my fathers declining health. The spare bedroom once again needs to be a bedroom. I know many modelers enjoy modeling the class 1 mainline railroads and there is nothing wrong with that, but I've always been attracted to the branch lines and short lines. For me they have their own special appeal, sneaking through back yards and around tight turns to service industries in small towns and rural locations. Very nice video DJ on the Turtle Creek Industrial Railroad. Cheers, Rich S.

    It was good to see your first effort and to hear about your “failures.” I don’t see them as that, rather than as “learning experiences” as one of my favorite mathematics professor used to say. Still your beginning efforts look better than any of mine. You are encouraging and supportive. Guys like you are gifts to hobby and your encouragement has kept me going. Eventually I will have something of value to share, I have good ideas, just terrible for now at executing them. As for MR, I stopped subscribing to them because they were “too perfect” and none of their videos are free. I can find the same information on TH-cam by some of their contributors, so why bother with them and their elitist approach to the hobby. They have yet to catch up to the real world that is why subscriptions are falling. Joe Fugate’s online magazine is much better and has very relevant information and content.

    That's a cool layout ! Oh, BTW in case you're interested, the TCRR doesn't really the standard aar channels for the radio comms. I did a search on radioreferience and the Turtle Creek Railroad actually use FRS channel 01 (462.5625) for their operations. I would assume that when TCRR is out the main or interchange, they have to be on AAR Channels

    Hey DJ. After seeing your first layout video I went to the Mode Railroader site and looked at what they consider "acceptable" layout photos. They are just perfect little scenes. nothing out of place. They are lifeless. I watch your videos as I am notified. You have taught me mixing up the scenery is the way to go. Your layouts look so much more lifelike. I have modeled on and off for forty years and in the next few months, will be starting a 7' x7' U shaped layout, with my "new" wife. (31/2 married years.) Her father was switchmen for ACL and CSX. She will watch how to videos on scenery and weathering for hours. She is excited about your way of making. scenery. Model railroader...Not so much. Keep it going. H.

    I like it when people just do their own thing. Whether it's just running along a 2x4 or with numerous tunnels, bridges or loops. If they can spend hours on it then it's just plain fun and a great learning tool.
    Not everyone can do that... me included sort of.

    djstrains love your content and your modelling is inspiration for me, great first layout like a lot of guys i started out wanting to model a prototype i have a love for the Pennsylvania Railroad and for my first layout i settled on the Delaware Avenue Branch i was committed so i was focused on modelling the Shackamaxon warehouse and adjacent pier/ team tracks, The research in aquiring information was a hobby in itself but it was worth it going further with the project i started off with a time frame of 1960 to 1968 going through my reference material i gained a love for the PRR A5 steam switchers that worked these streets twenty years earlier and the rugged nature of these small brutes and admiration for the men that worked them so i backdated the timeframe of my proposed project to the 1940's and i could still run my collection of Stewart ho scale Baldwin diesel switchers my vision was clear on what i wanted this to look like i was going to model this railroad history faithfully the best i could and share it with others i built a module and mock up buildings to gain perspective and then suddenly i thought to myself i don't have my signature pieces to this puzzle, the A5 switchers i didn't have a single one i searched everywhere knowing that Bowser made a kit but to me it didn't have that look of the prototype that hurt big time and i eventually weened myself off the project i wanted to simulate the hollering of those A5 steam whistles echoing off those tall warehouse buildings in minitature, just thought i would share.

    I'm wondering if any of those Trolly lines went to any of the PA amusement parks, like Kennywood or others?

    • @djstrains
      @djstrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it was west penn railways that did go to Kennywood. There are 2 volumes of "Trolleys in color" that cover this area.

    Trafford.?? Looks a bit out of the way from where Manchester United play... 😁
    Ironically there is a rail intermodal yard 500 yards down the line from their ground in real life... 🤣🤣

      actually Westinghouse named it after the area you mention. There is a plaque on the highway up the road.

    Do you take it to model railroad shows? I’m going to show mine when I finally get where I’m going and have a decent space in which to make it work well.

      its been gone for 20 years. Never took it to a show. I had a few modules when I belonged to a club, but my unpredictable work schedule was the reason I quit the club.

    Are you a lorry driver or a train driver? Or a health care worker? Or even an ambulance driver or carer or a policeman? How comes your job made you quit the club?
