The fact is, Bay was more than done with the TF franchise. Since Transformers 3 he wanted to leave the TF movies to someone else. He never had any love or understanding for the Transformers. At the time, Paramount were persuaded that the TF movies won't make money without Bay (losing both Bayformers haters and fans was their biggest fear). So they forced him to direct 2 others movies about "boring robots" according to him. He had a simple choice: making TF movies until the very end of the hype or killing the hype by himself. Disapointing the global audience was the most efficient way for Bay to force Paramount to reconsider their plans for the TF movies. So its not a bad thing if the audience react that way, it was a painful but necessary step towards a new direction.
