- Led by Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, Hal Greer, Chet Walker, Lucious Jackson, Wali Jones, and Coach Alex Hannum, the 1966-67 76ers had one of the most dominating seasons in NBA history.
They defeated the Celtics, who had won the previous eight NBA Championships, in the semifinals, and defeated the Warriors in the finals to claim the franchise's 2nd NBA Championship.

In truth there only 1 inch shorter on average and maybe not even since back then they were measured barefoot now they are measured in shoes .My husband is 6 ft four in shoes he is almost 6 ft. 6. They had plenty of big men back then too and in some ways more athletic. A faster more physical game. The younger generation should learn this .They should also learn white people and other races were some of the best basketball players in history .The NBA today is all one color but no one says it is racist if it was all white you would never here the end of it. The best team in history was Boston and they were half black half white seems like a winning formula history proves it lmao. I love to see a mix of different races playing in all sports your dedication and heart determines if you win or lose not your skin color. It also gives young people someone they can relate too and inspire from any race of people. I used to love the NBA but seeing one race of people shut out of it made me less of a fan.

Philadelphia doesn't win the NBA often, but their champions in '67 and '83 were among the best teams ever.
83 was more dominant in a league with better competition.
They should have won several more titles from 69-73 if team management had not prematurely and rather stupidly broken up the team following the 1968 season.

The 68-13 doesn't even tell how legendary this team was. They are in the Pantheon of all-time great squads.
Wilt's average stat line of 24.1 points, 24.2 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game, and who knows how many blocks he averaged is ridiculous. He was allowed to do that because other guys could put the ball through the hoop as well, like the three other HOF'ers he played with in Hal Greer, Chet Walker, and Billy Cunningham.
Wilt got 55 rebounds versus Bill Russell in a game.

They played 36 of their 81 regular season games against opponents who had at least 2 Hall of Famers (more in the Celtics' case). If that's not a record, it should be.

Best ever playoff performance and accomplishment and best ring ever snapping the goat dynasty at its peak 8-0 streak and then going on to dominate the finals while wilt averaged 22, 29, 12, and 9 off 58% shooting on the very verge of averaging a quadruple double for an entire postseason. Doesn’t get better than that

Chet Walker, and that Wally dude, decent players, really decent. great playmakers. Creating their own space and therefore shots....and very solid shooting.. Cunningham had a good left hand. Kangaroo Kid!!! Two white boys(Cunningham-Goukas added color to the MACHINE, really rounded them out Wilt made Russell look sophomoric.... Wilt has the energy here of a mythical Gian, a graceful giant. 41 rebounds!! In awe really.....thanks for this I greatly appreciate this

This was the Greatest Basketball Team EVER !!!!! And Their coach was Alex Hannum ( One of the Great Coaches ) - He traveled to other cities to coach, St Louis ( Champions ) Philly (Champions ) and Oakland ( ABA Champions) He might have been the Beat Coach EVER in the League. Unlike Phil Jackson, he didnt wait until a team was loaded with talent to take the job.

Jack Ramsey was a great GM and a great coach. He coached the 77 Blazers that won the title with Walton at center which was an all-time great coaching job.
Jing Qi I agree with you. However, he also broke up a great 76er team of the late 60’s. Philly could and should have won 2 or 3 more NBA titles with the team they had in 1967-68. Instead, Jack Ramsey and others, broke up this great, great team prematurely and unnecessarily. By 72-73, they were 9-72. All because they let Alex Hanumn leave for California , and did not want to make Wilt a player coach, and pay the man accordingly. They were mean to Luke Jackson, and misused him physically, and traded away Walli Jones for who? They let Cunningham walk away to the ABA, and traded away Chet Walker for Jim Washington. Not a fair trade by a long shot! By 1972, Hal Greer was left with nobody from a great championship team. Dr. Jack Ramsey: He was to blame!

So great to see this. My Dad was Producing the games at WPHL this season and travelled with the team. He also set the camera locations at the Spectrum. Makes me wonder if any of this is his footage. So many great memories from this time.

I don’t share your feelings for Jack Ramsay. He basically is responsible for breaking up the 76ers following the 68 season. In 6 years they went from 68-13 and NBA champs to 9-73 and laughing stock of the league. He traded away Wilt for nothing like equal value, traded away Chet Walker, let Billy Cunningham jump leagues, traded away Walli Jones, and destroyed Lucious Jackson’s career and forced him into early retirement before he was 30. And one more thing: As coach of the Blazers in 77, he stuck a knife in the Sixers by beating them in the finals. As a longtime Sixer fan, he is no hero of mine.

This was probably Wilt's 2 most important games in his memory. I can only imagine his emotions, after all those close losses to the Celtics, to finally beat them decisively.

Thanks for this video. This was my favorite team. The night they knocked out the Celtics, my Dad wouldn't let me stay up. (Heck, maybe it wasn't on TV-- very few games were; maybe I just wanted to seet the score on the news, can't remember.) Anyway, when I woke up next morning, Dad had taped a note on my door, so that's how I found out they had beaten Boston -- funny the little things you remember from eons ago.

During the NBA All Star game they are currently talking about a ridiculous conspiracy theory that apparently exists that Wilt Chamberlain never actually scored 100 points in a game. I've always heard rumors of a much more believable conspiracy theory about Wilt Chamberlain that the NBA intentionally destroyed the original broadcasts of most of Wilt Chamberlains greatest games. I always hold the 1967 76ers as a prime example to support this theory....not a single game they won all season exists in broadcast form whatsoever. The only game from this entire 1967 season that exists is a 76ers loss. The only team to beat the Boston Celtics in the entire 1960's, and it's all been wiped. It goes much further than that, but it's incredible how few of Wilt's games have been preserved in original form. Technology had a lot to do with it, but it really does seem odd that the old games that exist of Wilt are some of the worst moments of his career (1969 Finals Game 7, 1970 Finals Game 7)....1972 Finals 4th quarter and championship celebration, the Lakers first, has also been permanently destroyed/"lost"

Oh well I've never doubted for a second that it did take place, it's absurd to say it didn't, it was witnessed by thousands of people and was broadcast on the radio. Wilt even rode back home in a car with several Knicks players, not his own teammates. Wilt kept nodding off asleep and would wake up to hear the Knickerbocker guys trash talking him, "I can't believe he just did that to us!" I remember hearing the story of Wilt riding back with the Knicks when I was just a kid. Back in those days it was very common for players to travel any way they could, you used to even have to run through cornfields with your luggage to catch certain trains back then! (Fort Wayne Pistons for instance had no direct route to the town)

The 1960s in major sports were usually years when the likes of the Yankees/Celtics/Canadiens/Dodgers/Packers won titles. But '67 had the 76ers and the Maple Leafs! Between that and the Impossible Dream Red Sox- quite a fascinating sports time.

Today's NBA is stocked with terrific athletes whose basketball skills are generally one-dimensional. The all around player is no longer a centerpiece of today's NBA landscape. That landscape mainly consists of very good guards/small forwards, good power forwards, and mediocre centers. In terms of mythical matchups, the 1991-1993 threepeat Bulls were 1-6 against Hakeem's Rockets, so those who believe that the Bulls would have defeated Wilt's 1967 76ers are borderline delusional. The 1996-1998 threepeat Bulls would have had a better shot of defeating the 1967 76ers, but due to Luc Longley's limited skill set, Rodman would have been required to play some center. There is little chance that the 6'7" 225 pound Rodman would contain the 7'1" 295 pound Chamberlain nor would the Bulls backup power forwards be able to contain the 270 pound Luke Jackson. Despite advances in nutritional supplements and weight training, the 1966-1967 76ers still have the most physically imposing front line (e.g., Chamberlain, Jackson, and Chet Walker) in NBA history.

I agree people were stronger back then and life was much harder and more physically demanding for everyone in general. Young people today were never taught to respect their elders and people who came before them and opened doors for them. The attitudes of young basketball players with exceptions is one of entitlement and they carry themselves with no class compared to the old school ones sad really.

To everyone who watched this, to all who know of the players on both teams, how can people say Russell clearly had better teammates?? The Sixers were strong, well balanced and powerful. As were the Lakers. Yes, in previous years Boston, for the most part, was stronger overall than Wilt's teams. But, in no way, shape or form was that the case all of (Wilt and Bill's) their careers.
Pretty easily actually considering Russell only played 2 more years after this season and you've already admitted yourself the teams prior to this year were more talented and stronger. So it actually was the case for most of Wilt and Bill's careers in the league together.
From 1960-65 Celtics were clearly superior to Wilt’s Warriors. Celtics had 8 Hall of Famers! However Wilt’s 76er and Laker teams were just as good as the Celtics. Wilt could only win 2 titles with these excellent teams, while continuing to lose to Boston. He must assume some responsibility for this.
@@frederickrapp5396 The Lakers were better but a lot weaker than people supposed. In getting Chamberlain, they gave up Gail Goodrich, a serious blow as he was young and in his prime. Baylor had slowed, he wasn't what he used to be. West was still excellent and Chamberlain was still great, but there were depth issues as well. And the coach, Van Breda Kolf, openly had nothing but contempt for Chamberlain, even before Chamberlain was on his team. This isn't according to Chamberlain, it's from the horse's mouth. The chemistry was never right on that Lakers team in 68-69.
76ers were better, more balanced, but the Celtics were still near the height of their power in 65 and 66 playoffs, only just starting to slide with Havlicek hitting his stride. Chamberlain had a definitively better team in terms of roster and an equally brilliant coach for just two seasons out of all the ones he faced Boston. And they split the two championships.
This is what people underestimate the significance of. Russell had one team, one coach, one organization. The Celtics weren't just stacked, their chemistry was legendary, built up over years and years of playing together. Chamberlain's Warriors had 3 seasons before the team imploded upon the move to San Francisco. He had 2.5 seasons with that team before being traded. He had 3.5 seasons with the 76ers before being traded again to play the rest of his career. When it comes to coaches, Chamberlain had 3 good coaches: McGuire, Hannum, and Sharman. However, unlike Russell who had Auerbach - one of the greatest NBA coaches ever - for 10 straight seasons before he became player coach (while essentially copying Auerbach's whole playbook), Chamberlain never had more than 2 consecutive seasons with any of those three. He had McGuire for one season followed by a one season gap before he had Hannum who brought a slightly different strategy for 1.5 seasons. After that, a 1.5 season gap happened again before he had Hannum again, but this time with a completely different strategy. After 2 seasons with Hannum, there was a 3 season gap before Sharman for his last two seasons.
And contrary to popular belief, these gaps weren't his fault. McGuire was lost when the team moved to San Francisco. The Warriors upper management made the trade to the 76ers because they didn't think Chamberlain was marketable there. And Hannum quit his job with Philly to move back to California, taking a coaching job with an ABA team there.
This isn't to say Chamberlain was perfect, rather than his career is a complicated thing to examine as it was constantly dirupted by roster changes, organization changes, strategy changes, team changes, coach changes. Meanwhile Russell had just one roll on one team under one great coach.
Oh and Chamberlain suffered a near career ending knee injury in 69 and was never the same. So after 68-69, you have to realize that is not the chamberlain who dominated the 60s. That plus the Lakers core team began showing its age.

What is stunning to me is that there is not one single broadcast of this great team, other then a partial game 4 eastern conference finals game (which they lost). I know the NBA was not that big back then but what about like local TV broadcast. Could they have taped over every single one?
I used to listen to the 1966-67 Philadelphia 76ers on WCAU radio with Andy Musser doing the play by play, and Sonny Hill the color commentary. This station had a very powerful signal that carried all the way to upstate NY, where I lived. TV broadcasts were limited to the NBA Game of the week on ABC on Sunday afternoons from 2-4pm. In the ‘67 Playoffs, I recall watching game 4 of the Eastern Finals vs. the Celtics, and games 2 and 5 of the championship series vs. the Warriors. No other games were televised. It was a different time than today.

Yet Wilt couldn't win nearly as many. People though this championship was gonna start another dynasty for Wilt. Instead Wilt ended up losing to Russell and the Celtics again. Then he went to L.A. starting the league's very 1st super team and once again people thought Wilt was gonna go on a string of championships with this team. Only he ended up losing again to Russell, then again to Fraizer and Reed's Knicks then again to Kareem and Oscar's Bucks till finally he was able to win his 2nd and only other championship. Which frankly is quite a disappointment.

that's what happens to russell when he faces a team with equal number of all star players . its like if a team has a 50% higher salary cap than all the other teams and wins 8 in a row id say they won mainly because they had a higher salary cap not because one of there players was the so called best defender of all time. if he is the best defender off all time how would he let the guy hes guarding get 55 rebounds or 63 points ??? wilt did that to him greatest defender of all time would not let that happen true or false ?

In the seasons they played against each other, russell and wilt faced each other 142 times from the 1960 to 1969 season (all 10 seasons during wilt’s prime, unlike russell whose prime ended probably in 1966). Wilt averaged 28.7 points against russell, while averaging 34.4 for those years, while doing 36.3 points against teams other than the Celtics. So russell held wilt to 8 PPG lower than wilt scored against other teams. I’d call that pretty damn good defense. Wilt averaged 63 against russell once, so what. 1 game isn’t a good sample size. But 142 games is, which russell held wilt to 28.7. That’s why russell by far has the most defensive win shares 133, 27 over 2nd place. You bring up the supporting cast, which is a good point, however the Celtics beat this 76er core in both 1966 and 1968. So they have the 2-1 advantage. And russell was past his prime and a player coach. They won because of russell. Why do you think Boston suddenly missed the playoffs the year after russell left? Of why they did nothing before russell joined? And during the Celtics dynasty, there were 2 separate times where russell had to miss a few games in a row. There was once when he had to miss 5, the Celtics lost all 5. Another time he had to miss 4, they lost all 4. Russell himself summed it up well, “the way I play, my team wins.”
