    Thanks. Nice to see both a wiring diagram and then actually seeing it done physically - makes it easier to understand. When you did the downstairs switching (second switch) should the grey and black wire also have brown tape put on them as they can potentially become live ?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, grey and black should be identified as live if being used as a switched live. I think I show that in the video. Thanks for watching.

    Good video, I think some older houses use an additional single core cable, rather than a single 3 core cable.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right Andrew but if the wiring is that old, it'd be better to renew it completely than adjust it as it is likely it won't have modern safety protection like correct earth bonding and RCD protection etc so always worth bearing that in mind. Thanks again for watching!

    • @henrytoor3917
      @henrytoor3917 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, older houses sometimes installed metal conduit with single wires run thru them (prior to this it was wooden capping installed by the carpenters.!!). Two way wiring for single core cable would be slightly different but the same number of conductors would be used. IE The feed/live cable would terminate in the common terminal of the first switch, the switch-line would terminate in the common terminal of the second switch, and a pair of 'strappers' would run between the two switches and connect into L1 and L2. This method was/is much more common in commercial/industrial type situations as less cable would be used, but as you say, also used in older dwellings but as Pouse says, if that old it needs replacing.

  • @1414141x
    @1414141x 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Using this method is great but the practicality of having to put 10 wires (more if you are looping out to another light) into a ceiling rose is difficult especially if you have 1.5mm wires and have to put additional sleaving on them to identify switched lives. Far better to have all the wires to go into a junction box above the lamp unit in whatever void you have . Then you only need the two wires and earth coming out of the junction box to the lamp unit. Not always possible if you are converting and have not access to put a junction box in but preferable if you can do it.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, yes there are several ways of doing it, this is just one. You can even wire the connections behind the switch. It all depends on the set up and accessibility really. Thanks for the feedback.

    Might be worth mentioning that while you are working on the 2 gang switch in the hall that you should isolate both the upstairs lights and the ground floor lights as there will be live wires to the hall circuit inside that switch.

    What if its a 2gang on the hallway and on the landing opposed to a 1 gang? Meaning downstairs you've got a 2 gang switch 1 rocker controls hallway lights and the other rocker controls upstairs landing, and you've got the same upstairs. Do you just connect one side from the downstairs light and then take the 3 core cable upstairs and connect. Then use the other side for upstairs light and take 3 core cable downstairs and connect?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just treat each switch as a single gang switch as that's all they are really just placed in one housing. So as you said just wire to the correct terminals.

      It is safe to connect brown and blue as long as the blue is colour coded with brown tape or sheath so it can be identified as a live wire and not a neutral. Not quite sure of the install you're doing though. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    Hi fella, nice video.
    I've a dimmer switch that has been detached with a wire input that goes from a double plug, into a one-game switch, then wiring coming out of the one-gang into a dimmer.
    The wiring goes to 2 lights in a fitted bedroom.
    The wiring to go into the dimmer switch is 2 brown, 2 blue and one green/yellow (no black).
    The back of the dimmer switch is L1, L2 and common (I guess, an arrow with a wavy line over it).
    What wires would I attach to the dimmer switch?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like a fused spur from socket to power the lights. However I'm not sure what's going on there and wouldn't like to comment without seing or testing it sorry. Often people use a fused switch to directly turn lights on and off. Not sure why it would then go to dimmer. You should also have a 3amp fuse in switch and not 13 which they often come with. My advice would be get it tested to be safe. Could be some dodgy wiring! Probably hasn't helped Sorry!

    Hi, I already have this setup in my brothers house, he wants a 3rd switch put near his bedroom door. I’m guessing I would need something like an 8 core cable to run all 3 light switches or could I put additional 4 core cable from the 2nd switch to the 3rd?

    • @dale9616
      @dale9616 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tristan Simpkins put another 4 core from the second switch (the one with only one existing cable) to the new switch. You’ll need to buy an ‘intermediate’ switch with 4 terminals to go in the middle one. Wire the new end switch the same as before. The middle switch now with 2 cables - join through the commons with a connector, connect the two L1’s with the same colour from each cable, connect the two L2’s with the remaining colour from each cable.

    Hi Pouse, great video as usual. Thanks very much. However, I have a query, if I may ..... in my living room ( formerly two rooms but now one) I have two lights controlled by one switch but I'd like to separate the switching so I can operate each light separately by a dual control switch ( i.e. two switches in one box). The current switch appears to be simple with just two wres in it. However, one of the ceiling roses is wired as standard but the other has numerous wires in it. Are you able to explain how to separate the switching for the two lights please? Many thanks.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeff, without looking it's impossible to say as there are different ways to configure the wiring to achieve the same result. You could try my other video - How to fit a 1 way light switch - th-cam.com/video/IqptsH7X4RI/w-d-xo.html. This may help. Failing that it may be worth employing an electrician to take a look as safety is obviously the priority. Thanks for watching and best of luck.

    Hi, I’m having trouble wiring my new light switch. Tried to copy your video but I think my electrics are wired differently. In one switch I have 2 red wires and one brown and in the other I have the same but with an extra green wire. I’ve tried to connect the brown to com and the red ones to L1/L2 on both sides and have earthed the green but it’s still not working. Am I just that silly that I can’t understand? Thanks

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you effectively have your ceiling rose wiring (loop in / loop out) in the switch rather than in the ceiling. Difficult for me to explain without seeing it or doing another video. If in doubt, call an electrician, don't injure yourself or blow the house up! Best of luck and thanks for watching.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will need 3 core and earth cable running from the existing switch to the new switch. You will also need both switches to be 2 way switches. You need 3 wires to act as live and switched live wires, and you'll need an earth wire, so 4 wires in total. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the lamp comes with all 3 wires, then yes you must connect the earth. If you have really old wiring in your home with no earth wires, then you need to use double insulated (class II) lamps which are safe for use without an earth. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, No FB page sorry. Com = l1 (and will be the terminal on its own), 1=l2, 2=l3 and will be next to eachother. If you have them all twice on one switch unit, then sounds like you have 2 switches on one unit which is a 2 gang switch. Both switches can operate separate lights, it's like 2 switches on one unit. Just don't disconnect the wiring until you have the right replacement switch! If in doubt get an electrician to have a look! Sorry if that hasn't helped. Thanks for watching!

    Hi, thanks for this, does this work the same if I want to add a second switch to my downstairs hall? I have a double switch in the hall already by the stairs for upstairs/downstairs and a double switch on the landing for the same, however looking to add a single switch near the front door as it's pretty dark when you walk in and you have to stumble over to the stairs to the light switch. This would only be to turn on the hall light, not the landing. Is it the same principle? Also, my switches have L1, L2 & L3, is L3 the common? Sorry if asking stupid questions, just want to make sure this can be done. Thanks, great video by the way.

    • @gwhech
      @gwhech 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Denise Fowler if you are asking if you can have 3 switches controlling your hall light, this video won’t help. You need to look at intermediate light switches.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the switches in your hall will be for the downstairs light. You need to run a cable from that switch to another switch by the entrance door (as you said) as seen in the video. You will then have two switches for the hallway light. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

      I know Pouse tried to keep this simple Bob, I'll just add that while it is important that the common conduct (black wire in this case) is in the common terminal at both switches, if the brown and blue conductors (strappers) are transposed then the circuit will still work perfectly. So just maybe easier to remember, black to common and Brown and Blue to either L1 or L2 at either switch.

      Well if you don't live in the UK then the wiring won't be relevant to you. But thanks for taking the time to watch my video! Best of luck.

      Then you shouldn't be touching electrics anyway? BTW it is called Lingo? Also no need to shout.
