This is how you can get kids to be so engaged and maybe down the road to be future engineers :) And you get some good quality family time, loved this so much
My son yells at me from upstairs. "DAD, DAD! You won't believe this! Mark Rober is skipping rocks at Lake Cavanaugh!" My family has had a place on Lake Cavanaugh for over 50 years and not that far from where this video was shot. Our place is on South Shore Drive just across from the big island. We go there every July 3rd. My son has been a fan of yours since we were trying to gain an advantage at the Pinewood Derby three years ago. This video made my son's day. Keep up the good work.
That's funny, my dad used to own a place on South Shore Drive across from a big island until about 50 years ago when a man calling himself "Moderngraded" stole his land
We will definitely look for it next time we're there. My dad probably knows your family. He knows everybody. I'm sure your family is familiar with mine in one way. Every Fourth of July my cousin Brandon lights a cannon off every few hours or so. I swear it echoes all the way to Whitehorse Pass. Sorry about that. Anyway, my son is giddy over your comment. Hahaha. Well Retrograded is where it's at now. We are obviously very popular with our two videos. But one of them is the best video on the Hoh Rainforest you will ever see. LOL.. My son's 4th grade research project.
Fun egg drop story since you mentioned it at the very end. My dad is a retired architect, and in college one of his engineering classes had an egg drop competition. Lightest structure to have an egg survive the drop wins, yadda yadda yadda. Well, my dad asked the professor where they were holding the competition and it turns out that it was from the roof of a single story building, throwing the eggs into a grassy lawn. He then asked the professor how many tries they got and he could try as many times as he wanted. So my dad bought two dozen eggs, went up to the roof, and started tossing. Eventually, one landed without breaking, which meant he won with a structure of zero weight. They changed the rules of the competition after that....
I'm impressed he is teaching his nephews and nieces to engineer. And making it fun at the same time. And there's the fact that he's doing the same thing for us on TH-cam.

Dirt/loam is a mix of rock, sand, clay and silt. Silt is mostly dead bacteria that have decomposed organic matter (leaves, sticks, poo, dead animals) I think sand and clay are similar and silica based, but clay is worn into a flatter shape which is why it is found by rivers. The river washed out the silt from the loam and wore the sand down. Mark is sort of right, but not quite at all. Loam without rocks, clay, and sand is called humus, but most people would still call it dirt. Dirt/Loam without silt is clay. And depending on where you get the dirt, usually its clay content would be pretty low and wouldn't really work for making any sort of pottery.

More than rock skipping robot i loved the way he made his nieces nd nephews work as a team. Each of them according to their age nd intellectual capability was helping the project. I remember this saying from LOTR, if u want to go fast go alone nd if u want to go far go together. Guy didn't just create scientific instrument, he passed on legacy.
