the thing i like about mark rober is his ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms. like if i were to explain the whole energy thing he was talking about i wouldve gone into work-energy theorem, equations, and integration, but he just manages to basically explain the jist of it in a simple manner that even a child can understand

See, when we did this in year 9 (10th grade), we had a whole school day dedicated to this experiment, but they made it like a legitimate NASA project. We had limited funding (they gave us coloured counters that indicated money). These were used to buy materials when we were there (so already, your options were limited to what they provided, and how much your group could afford). Then we had to assemble it there and then (with a time limit!) and do the drop in the afternoon. It was great fun, but jeez was it a challenge….

The competition I did as a kid had an "only supplied materials from any one of these bins", and "has to fit in this box" (which was like 4x4x4; insanely small) for a second floor drop onto pavement.
Wrapped the egg in thread, then thin cloth, then yarn, then progressively softer materials, before lining the box with low density foam. slowed the moment of impact so it worked like a charm.

I once took part in a egg drop challenge. We didn't have a lot to work with, so I wrapped the egg in a piece of soft foam, and placed two plastic cups around this to hold the egg in place. I wanted it to keep it vertically oriented, so I had a small piece of aluminum foil in the bottom of one cup and some pipe cleaners through the bottom of the other cup. My goal was to distribute the force of impact around the egg and give the egg some room to move to more slowly brake the fall it's fall (change in velocity over change in time). The cups shattered, but the egg survived a three-storey drop.

It did. Take it the next morning. Every kid will think you brought pizza for them. Mine was the only one that made it from the top of the stadium intact. It floated down. I got a 140 with extra credit since I used aerodynamics rather than cushioning.

This reminded me if a challenge my school had last year, where we had fo mail a pringle to our superintendent, without it getting damaged, while using the least weight and mass, and so that theoretically, it would be edible upon delivery. Me and my friend ended up modifying a ziplock to the shape of the pringle, cut a dozen egg carton down to a third of the size, (4 eggs) and then creating a platform within the carton for the pringle to rest. We decided against a lot of packing peanuts and what not due to concern that rather than compressing like with an egg, it would just break the chip. We forgot about it until the last day of school when our gifted coordinator handed us the certificate saying that we won. I just found it interesting that 60% if our time in class for work was planning, and that taught me that engineering required a lot of work, but is seriously fun. Personally I hope I get to do more challenges like that and the egg drop in the future.

I remember doing this back in elementary school! If I recall correctly, I put my egg in a box with packing peanuts and then put a water balloon on the bottom of the box. The fact that the balloon was filled with water would weight it down so it wouldn't turn around, and it would help cushion it like an airbag, I figured. Also, I was an elementary schooler, and for our competition we got to go up on the roof of the school and drop our eggs off, and I basically just thought it would be awesome to drop a water balloon off the roof of the school and the egg thing was a great excuse to do just that. :D I did indeed drop my water balloon creation off the school, and the balloon burst gloriously, and it was wonderful! Haha, I was such a mischievous little child.
Second cool story about that contest: my mom told me before the competition that if I got my egg to survive, we could use it to make a cake together, and I was so excited about baking a cake with it that I was extra-determined to get my egg to make it. I made the mechanism described above, and it actually worked. Once I was back down off the roof, I ran and opened up my box, and there sat my egg, unscathed. I was so excited and happy, I held the egg up over my head and began to run around with it, like, "my egg survived! My egg survived!" But, though I did not yet know the word 'hubris', it was a relevant one. During my victorious promenade, I tripped on a crack in the sidewalk and fell, skinning my knees and smashing my now-unprotected egg to pieces. My egg could survive the fall from the school, but it could not survive my pride. My mom and I made a cake together anyways, though, but it would've been cooler to use an egg that had fallen from my school's roof atop a water balloon. Well, I should've known what they say about pride and falls.

As a parents of a couple children that your creative and inquisitive nature strongly remind me of. I can only imagine that your parents were the most engaged and patient parent around or they lived on the edge of a nervous break downs. Or both. 😉 Climbing over the guardrail 😳.

One time when i was like 10, I remember doing an egg drop, and i just wrapped my egg in clear tape. The air pockets between each layer acted as a shock barrier. To my surprise it worked perfectly.

In 8th grade we just got a box and poked some holes in it, and slid panty hose in through them. Then put the egg in and basically made it a trampoline to where the panty hose absorbed the full impact both up and down.

Mine was pretty simple. I put plastic wrap on egg (so I don't have to worry about cleaning up if it cracks) before putting it into a ziploc bag filled with nothing but popcorns. My physic teacher took my and classmates' projects to third floor before dropping them one by one. Mine survives, no crack. Out of all, my project weighed heaviest but held number one shortest time from third floor to concrete ground. Thanks to grading formula with timing being heavily favored compared to weight, I got A+. Yay, fun project.
