a while ago i found an email i sent myself from my wii with the shitty built in browser in 2013, when i was like 12 or so. it just said "look im on the wii!!!". i kinda shed a tear ngl lol

When I see the Wii as an outdated console, I feel so OLD.
That's exactly how I feel. And I bought my Wii in 2012, nearly at the end of its life cycle. By now it's well and truly obsolete, except for the games I still enjoy playing on it - I'm glad I'm still able to.
To be fair, when I got a wii in 2008 it already felt outdated then. I remember being really disappointed with the web browsing capabilities on it even back then

@SapphireChaotix yeah. I was 13 years old, when it launched. And I know I was absolutely excited about those motion controlls, but of course could never get a damn console.
Now I'm feeling old as shit and I've also came to the logical conclusion that forced motion controlls like on the wii absolutely suck. It had great games tough. Just a little less motion controlls would have been nice.

A decent way to celebrate the Nintendo Wii's 15th anniversary! I used to use my Nintendo Wii Family Edition console's Internet Channel to browse the Internet back in the early 2010s and the mid 2010s, but not anymore. I miss those good old days.

The WiiBrowswer probably has an outdated SSL Root Certificate, that's why it does not work.
actually, no, i have dwnloaded the wiibrowser from the old homebrewbrowser, and that one works, there is an update to the latest version, and that version is bugged, i could never get it to work, the only version i could get to work was rev121, rev132 from what i've done, is bugged and won't load any website at all, and the site from which wiibrowser is updated from have been "archived" by the site host so, i think wiibrowser is a lost cause

I mean, I assume this entire thing around encryption is also at least part of why the Internet Channel fails, or more to the point it’s the outdated SSL versions involved. The modern web is fairly ruthless about backwards compatibility because many older TLS/SSL versions can be used to attacks even on connections that should use more modern versions.

The secure transaction error is probably due to the underlying browser not supporting TLS 1.2. It's an issue on most older operating systems or devices like PDAs, this and old SSL certificates.
What about the Wii browser thing?

I had my Wii hooked up through a VCR back in the day and I actually used the Wii browser to record TH-cam videos onto VHS tapes! I still have all those tapes and there are quite a few videos that are long since gone from TH-cam.

A lot of memories with the opera browser on Wii. So many sleepless nights watching TH-cam and playing browser based rpg games.

@@GalaxyGamer-qn1mv No, it's just that TH-cam used Adobe Flash to play their videos, which was replaced in favour of HTML5
I also used to use the Wii browser frequently for viewing TH-cam videos around 2008 - 2013.
If you happen to have its successor, the Wii U, its TH-cam channel app is still useful even today.
You still can use the internet browser for watching TH-cam on wiiu if u change the user agent.
@@spaghetto181 I’ve tried all options but the browser has been broken for months now when trying to view TH-cam. Even comments are no longer viewable. Got a specific user agent option that works in 2021?

@@spaghetto181 I tried all those user agents again (among others) just now on TH-cam videos, and it just gets caught in a loop asking to reload the page, never loading videos or comments. Which Wii U version successfully works for you? I’m on 5.5.2 U with no such luck. Thanks in advance.

The switch from http to https and TLS 1.2 is what really killed this thing. Old browsers don’t understand the higher level security standards we have today.
The Wii adapter/pi probably does not have automatic crossover, you'll need a crossover cable to directly connect the two together...
This gives me such a wave of emotion, My father homebrewed the wii and had thousands of games on it. I remember playing street fighters and tmnt fight. The ones where you insert the disc and run around + do the games in the open world with my brother. I always thought homebrew was built in. I think the thousands of games were on wiitux

Found my Wii in a cabinet the other day, so I decided to turn it on. The last time I had used it was back in 2011, during my first year of high school. When I opened the browser, it still had a bunch of old webpages pulled up, which included MyYearBook, the old Hotmail site, and the old TH-cam.
It’s like you know exactly the questions I think to myself when I’m bored at work and make videos on them
You can hook browservice up to your lan and just type it's ip up in the Wii. I did this with 98 and it worked for me.
This is just what i was looking for! Browsing the internet on the wii is really comfy, but really limited. Strange coincidence someone makes a video just now on this exact topic

I actually read somewhere that the wii internet channel speed is limited to 256kbps. It doesn't make sense as to why they'd do that but from what I've seen it kinda adds up
I used to use the Internet channel all the time for browsing Wikipedia, and I'm pretty sure I watched my first ever TH-cam video on it.
The zooming in and free cam parts feel chaotic and funny and while things did not go well but the video was educational in a way and hilarious at the same time

Hi, I just wanted to say I discovered your channel about a month or two ago and I absolutely love this kind of stuff. The Wii was my first console and I still use it pretty regularly so seeing fun experiments like this is always a great time.
I will say, I remember using the Wii version of Opera in 2016/2017 and it could load Wikipedia and TH-cam without issue. I wonder when exactly they became inaccessible? I remember the only weird thing being that Wikipedia wouldn't display italics but otherwise the site was fully functional.
17:43 they also used to sell the opposite product: a usb stick that, when connected to a computer connected via ethernet, created a Wifi access point for those who only had a wired connection.

This used to be one of my only ways to access the internet. It meant I could use a bigger screen, and believe it or not it was faster than an iPad.

I like how almost everyone is nostalgic about the Wii, but also killed the Wii U (which is basically the Wii 2).
Fun fact: for whoever has that original Wii Ethernet adapter, it’s compatible with the Wii U and even the Switch. I use them for both.

I was going to suggest doing this on the DSi, because back in the day there was a video on TH-cam running on a DSi using the same kind of tech as browservice. Was very intriguing since flash wasn't supported on the DSi.

The Wii's internet was never very good. Just use a computer or even a phone. Even a basic phone is multiple times faster internet than a Wii, when the internet actually worked.
There's not much point to it now anyway, pretty much everybody has a smartphone now or even a computer, those have like at least 10x the specs that the Wii had, the Wii also wasn't HD on top of that. For the time when smartphones were hardly a thing and many families had one computer and most online content wasn't HD anyway, the Wii Browser was decent though.

opera used to be the browser equivalent of doom, they would even still release updates for opera for devices that have lost any support some 10 years earlier.... I still had an up to date opera on my 2003 windows mobile smartphone in 2010, don't know when they stopped supporting windows mobile and Java ME but they were most likely the last company to drop them.
I used the java opera browser on my ancient Sony Ericsson Walkman all the way up until about 2018 and even though it couldn't run TH-cam, it still loaded any web pages I needed it to.
I remember being able to play some flash games in the Wii browser way back then... Tower defense games with a wiimote were lots of fun
I had my Wii for about a year before I connected it to the internet and once I did, it made the Wii like 10 times better. I used the internet channel all the time for youtube back in 2010-2012. Those were good times.

I used to use WiiBrowser to download Sonic rom hacks to my Wii to run them through an emulator.
It doesn't have any CSS support at all, so all webpages are displayed without styling, it used to work pretty well and really responsively from memory.
I'd recommend trying some different websites, I remember Google working at one point, but I guess something broke over the past 2 years.

I love watching these videos because anyone who does this always runs into a problem and at the end, either it doesn't work or it does but its not worth using.
If you find yourself needing to do more Wii capture, consider investing in some component cables or one of the better Wii->HDMI adaptors. Hyperkin makes a decent one.
I remember, originally you had to pay to download the browser in the early years of the wii. Later on they made it free, but they gave out a free nes game coupon (which was the same prices as the wii browser before it going free), I decided to get Final fantasy just because. I don't think i actually beatened yet holy shit

11:45 That's probably an error window, but because the browser is outdated it can't pull a proper error message to explain what went wrong.
Browsing the internet on a Wii was painfull especially having to use the virtual keyboard with the remote. Similar to using the DS/2DS/3DS to brownse the internet but at lease that had a stylus/touch screen for typing inputs quicker. Great that they added USB keyboard support in later versions for the Wii.
There's more time between 2021 and 2006 (Opera 9) than there is between 2006 and 1993 (beginning of the internet)

The Military was using it in 1969 and businesses and nerds were using it in the 80's but it did go mainstream around 1993 so it is still weird to think about there being more time between now and the Wii than the Wii and the mainstream internet.

I remember this browser getting slow over time lol, back in 2016 everything was way different for the browser, it was still extremely slow but you could actually load stuff in it.

Michael try the old net on the wii! I loaded it on my vwii (virtural wii menu on the wiiu) And it worked! It loaded the version of youtube from 2005.
