Hi folks, welcome to our first Delhi food tour, where I team up with my good friend, Chef Amit Wadhawan to relish and bring to you the enormous array of delicacies that the narrow alleys of Old Delhi have to offer. In the first few episodes, we explore a gamut of vegetarian street fare, beginning with two iconic eateries that date back to the close of the nineteenth century. One serves a scrumptious ghee soaked jalebi with thick rabri, and the other revels in its incredible variety of paranthas, that are decadently fried in pure desi ghee.

In saadi Dilli, this meethi chutney is also known as "Kele ki chutney". It's usually found served in outlets that are time tested & by seasoned chaatwala's who are not too fond of experimental or fusion food. Coming back to the condiment, not that this chutney is made using bananas or anything like that 🙂 They are simply sliced and incorporated, only after the chutney has been prepared & cooled. Fruits like chopped mangoes, grapes, apples, pomegranate arils are also added depending on the season & availability along with the bananas. But bananas being an all year round fruit is always the first choice, hence the name. I remember as kids, a cauldron full of this chutney used to grace the buffet table at Punjabi weddings, especially if the hosts were vegetarians. Or if they hailed from UP or the Jain community. We used to look forward to meet that cauldron, more than the bride and the groom 😜

I just have one question for you Kripal Sir- what is the difference between Old Delhi (Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid) & New Delhi? When I think New Delhi- forgive me, but I think of the classic film with Kishore Kumar (1929-1987) & Vyjanthimala and the song "Nakhrewali" 😄😂
