Gurudongmar lake is one of the highest lake in the world and India located at a height of 5183 meters in the North district of Sikkim. The lake is considered as one of the most sacred lakes of the state and receives around 15000 visitors annually, some on pilgrimage, while some on pure thrill of adventure and conquest; perhaps all with some special wishes because the lake is said to have divine powers to fulfil the wishes of devotees who visit the lake. Definitely I also carried my wishes. According to sacred Buddhist texts, Guru Padmasambhava also known as Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism visited this holy lake during the 8th Century A.D. where he sought an omen in this lake before entering the hidden land of Demjong, a name we popularly know as Sikkim today. It is believed that Guru touched and blessed the lake and that portion of the lake never freezes even during peak winter.
Legends say that the lake displays the angry side of the guru in the form of Red face which scares away all evil and so the name Gurudongmar. Which means Guru Padmasambhava, and Dongmar implies Red Face; so came the name Gurudongmar.
Gurudongmar lake has been notified as one of the most sacred Buddhist places of worship in Sikkim and is protected under the provisions of the Places of Worship Act 1991.
The water from Gurudongmar lake and Tso Lhamu Lake flows down the valley and meet at Chhombu Chu and together they mark the beginning of the famous river Teesta.
All devotees and tourists to Gurudongmar lake are gently reminded not to pluck wild flowers or damage any plants or disturb birds and animals, while a strict no on offerings inside the lake. Those adventurous are advised to follow only the trails and requested not to disturb the fragile high altitude vegetation by trampling.
All travellers can make travelling responsible, accountable and sustainable by respecting the local customs and traditions and enjoy the natural beauty of the holy lake and all places we visit and this means stop littering as well.
