  • Kiphire district hqr is 254 km away from Kohima, the Capital city of Nagaland. Perched at an altitude of 896 meters above the mean sea level and Wedged between Saramati, the highest mountain in the state and the Jingkhu mountains is a perfect Adventure tourist destination in Nagaland. Popular limestone caves at Salomi, Mimi and many more unexplored caves and waterfalls. The Zunki river and its fauna, water sports potential such as rafting and canoeing and my favourite being; camping by the riverside.
The Saramati peak at a height of 3840 metres located under Pungro sub-division of the district is the highest peak in Nagaland. The Saramati range of mountains lies in the border between India and Myanmar. The mountain is popular for the panoramic views of the surrounding ranges on both sides of the border suitable for moderate trekking for the amateurs. The best time for visiting Saramati and feeling the real pleasure of trekking is in the month of October and November and snowfall in the month of January and February.
Situated close to the India Myanmar border in the Pungro circle headquarter in Nagaland lies Fakim village and the fame Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary with an area of 642 hectares. A must visit attraction on a wildlife tour to Nagaland. With hills, high ridges, deep gorges and narrow valleys; here one can see good variation in landscapes and equally varied vegetation. It is a sanctuary for Blyth’s Tragopan (Tragopanblythii), Hornbill and many other endangered species of birds and animals and plant life. Fakim Sanctuary is also home to rich fauna like Panther, Barking Deer, Jungle Cat, Hoolock gibbons, Himalayan Bear, Sambar, Wild Boar, Bison and Slender Loris; to name a few. It is here that one can find dozen species of ferns and orchids Bay flower, and cinnamon trees.
In the ocean of virgin greenery and rare species of flora and fauna, the famous Bhutan Glory Butterfly has earned itself a crowned spot with a Club named Bhutan Glory Eco Club at Fakim. The Bhutan Glory Butterfly is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 under Schedule I & II and is an endangered species. Killing this species of butterfly is equivalent to killing a tiger and offenders can be sentenced for up to seven years of imprisonment.
