    As a Battlestar Galactica fan since the original show, I can tell you, that it looks awesome, and I am impressed.

    Amazing work. Very cool. I'm a big fan of the classic Sci Fi models. You nailed it.

    I think it's great work! The Cylon Raider has always been my favorite spacecraft after the BSGTOS Colonial Fleet Shuttle. I wish I could do this quality of work. Best of luck in your future endeavours.

    Nice build. I have the earlier Monogram version that was rereleased in the 90's with clear engines. There are subtle differences. I'm sure the Moebius is more accurate to the real production models, but as a display piece the Monogram looks fine.

    I'm comparing my 1978 smaller model to what your showing, both have good detail, yours is out of this world.

      dragdragon23 Thanks. I appreciate that. The 1978 kit was very good for its time. Plus, the Monogram kit was used for effects shots in "The Hand of God" (the infamous "They're waggling!" dialog where you see a Raider on the monitor).

    Nice work! I like how the cockpit serves as a battery compartment. I think your idea of using the Estes cones was brilliant. The effect is very nice and probably better than the original set up provided by the kit itself. Also great idea using the black base coat.

    This turned out really fantastic. I just finished the Revell 30th Anniversary Raider last weekend. I got to meet you last year at the Wonder Fest. I go by TurkeyVolumeGuessingMan on the SSM forum.

    I can't believe Flory and some other guys had the balls to say this model had "soft details."
    I think it looks VERY good as it is and you can obviously add onto it EASILY.
    I've heard it's better than the Monogram/Revell kit even though that kit itself can be upgraded fairly well, too.
    This thought seems closer to the pictures I've seen of the surviving original Cylon Raider miniature that was sold in a lot last year with the other original Galactica shooting miniatures.
    I'd go after the Moebius models if I had the interest in doing Galactica models now. They do seem to be appreciably better in general than the older kits, especially the original Battlestar Galactica model itself.

    Well done! I am most of the way through mine, and I have had a very different set of problems with mine that you have had. I had a pin mark on the back of the model and none on the front. The wings on mine don't fit right at all. Very strange.

    This looks really nice i had the smaller model that was sold a long time ago and it had missiles that would rocket out with a rubber that was on the inside and had a lever that you could push on the belly side to launch them !

  • @scottfirman

    The easiest model to ever build. You must have REALLY taken your time to build it. I built that model in 1977. It was much easier than the 747 and Enterprise model I got that same year for Chistmas. It may have been 1976 too, I forget. My favorite back then was the USS Enterprise from Star Trek that year. I remember it well because my parents broke up the year I built them. Sadly they all ended up in a box asnd shoved under my moms trailer. They got sold at a yard sale a few years later by my sister when my mother gave my sister the trailer. All those models would be classics now. Mabe I will build them again someday, who knows.

    The thing I don't like about modern interpretations of the Cylon Raider is that they lack the taper of the rear portion of the outer wings. If you compare the Mobius or Eaglemoss models to the ancient Monogram model, you can see that whereas the Monogram is manta-shaped, the modern versions are ovoids. It's very frustrating, since the surface details are right, but the overall shape is subtly wrong. Why am I sure that the Monogram model is wrong? I've seen excellent photos of the original studio models. The Monogram has a faulty nose piece; I scratch-built mine to match the studio version - which sits on my Monogram model. The Mobius' nose is correct. The Eaglemoss Raider has a lot of missing or simplified details. Colors should be shades of muted dusty blue-gray, not a light warm grey.

      Correction II: "Moebius", not "Mobius." But you already knew that.

      Although technically the Monogram kit is accurate to one Cylon Raider as seen in "Hand of God". That was the Raider model seen "waggling" on the bridge monitor.

    • @JMChladek
      @JMChladek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigskydude8068 I almost never do commissions because it can be a buzz kill to the creative process. But that being said, the Cylon has spent most of it's time in storage since I lack display space for it. So... it might be available for the right price.

    Looks great man !! The one Im building, I did a little different than yours. like the engines, I built two 2 inch long hexagon light boxes and installed the lighting using the clear kit part , I mounted that to the light boxes and in the front of the boxes I installed a frosted piece of clear plex it turned out pretty cool, the final result looks exactly like your kit so im pretty pleased. The only other thing I did different was I mounted the battery tray vertical with the switch installed beside it under the canopy. Your paint job is spot on Question though, the top black stripes, how did you mask a straight line around those greebles ? Im having a brain fart trying to figure out how to mask them. thanks Great Work !

    • @JMChladek
      @JMChladek  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Troy Meyer First of all, sorry this took so long to reply. The masking around the greeblies was done very carefully. But because I started with black and masked the stripes to do gray over them, I was able to use a bit more care in those spots. If I had gone the other way, it would have been more difficult given how tall some of those greeblies are (and I believe the effects modelers used a similar approach having the black areas not crossing the tallest details). Still, looking back I did have to do a little touchup here and there to sharpen up the paint edges where the stripe crossed the greeblies (it didn't need much).I have used a similar technique to paint one piece TIE Fighter wings, such as what the Revell and AMT kits have. So I paint the whole wing in black, mask off the solar panels and apply gray over the top. Result: a much crisper demarcation and the black acts like a pre-shade on the rest of the wing.

    I do like the look of these better than the Reimagined Raiders but I do understand why the new ones were designed the way they were.
    No need for a pilot, fewer materials used, each individual Raider can learn on their own over the course of several resurrections and finally there would be no need to worry about g-forces since there was no pilot that needed to operate any controls.
    It also helped to create a relatable caste system amongst the Cylons. An important plot point. Cylons were made by Humanity and treated as tools. When they gained sentience they saw themselves as slaves resulting in the first Cylon war. They eventually leave and eventually return. This is where the new series begins and in it there are Centurions, Raiders, Skinjobs and Hybrids. Each machine designed for specific tasks. This is a caste system and in it, a Raider can only be a Raider. With Skinjobs running the show, they purposefully limited the intelligence of the other cylons. Centurions had inhibitors and they eventually began performing lobotomies on Raiders because "fighter ships don't need to think that much"
    Cylons treated their own just as... inhumanely as humans did.
    Eventually one of the skinjobs recognized how wrong that was and the ensuing retribution was one of the sweetest things in that season.

    I always liked the Cylon ships best in the original series. Didn't care for the Viper fighters.-well too much like X-wings. Too bad the coolest ship was flown by souless robots(since no indication the original Cylons were humanoids).
