The talk about FF12's hunt system at 16:30 is true. It sounds really shallow, flavour text giving you story and lore, basically descriptions of monsters/their habitat/where they came from/how they came to exist/what they are. It also sounds shallow that these monsters you kill are usually just a re-coloured slightly adjusted skin of another monster. But lemme tell you that when i hunted down Trickster outside Mt. Bur Omisase, this huge white chocobo, or having to talk to scared residents of sewer towns under Rabanstre to find the location of a ghost that scared a child, i was having more fun that what a lot of games provide now.
As someone who's worked in TV and video production for the last several years, there is no better moment in these videos than when Tim does his 1000 yard stare to get into character.

Tim Rogers just invented the new way to dominate the industry. The Fortune Teller of Videogames, the one and only. Script a Video, that is already a 1% mentality where 99% of reviewers leave the room. Then to come up with the innovation to review a game before any one else cause it is not out yet, though give such industry insights as he did in the last prereviews, that my friend is a genius' minds' work. What a great start in 2020!
Tim asks a great question at the end, "What was the last super great thing Square Enix made?" Was it actually Final Fantasy 7? Here are some other possible candidates since then: Final Fantasy Tactics - the best tactical RPG ever made. However it came out just shortly after FF7, so the "when" question would be about the same time. (1997) Final Fantasy X - This is the first fully voice acted game I'd ever played. The fact that it was also a huge RPG made it an amazing experience. Does this quality as "super great"? (2001) Kingdom Hearts - Everyone thought this would be dumb before it released. Then we played it and it was awesome. Does this qualify? (2002) Octopath Traveler (2018) - This game is definitely a unique take on a turn based JRPG. I really enjoyed it but thought it was flawed too. Perhaps, this series might need another iteration or two before it's considered "super great"? Is there any other huge milestone I missed in the post FF7 era of Square Enix? What do you think was the last "super great" thing they made?
People really forget about Final Fantasy IX... I think that it may have been the best FF on the PS1. I would also say that Dragon Quest VII, VIII, and XI were great.
I mention Octopath Traveler because he later says "great and new", as in a new direction. That's why I didn't mention games like FF9, which I think is one of the best games I've ever played, but it wasn't trying to recreate a new type of experience so much as make a refined and polished experience of what came before. Octopath Traveler was actually trying to push the envelope more than other Square Enix games have tried in a long time.
I was walking my dog, still am, and I found myself thinking "if only Tim Rogers put out 24 hours of content daily, I'd have something to do right now." Realizing what that would take, I settled on one hour. 15 seconds later, I found another prereview. And that's the straight dope.
They did recreate her wearing wedges on her feet for the Remake, though! I mean if that’s what you could interpret she was wearing in the original blocky version.
I've thought a lot about the side quests in FF7:RE as well and I too have thought of the Witcher 3 but it's not really not fair to ask FF7:RE To be as extensive as The Witcher 3. Well at least not part 1. I feel like there is great opportunity to open up side quests once we get to the world map. They could VASTLY expand on the whole Fort Condor thing and make it a much bigger thing. The Golden Saucer definitely has to be expanded upon, Hunting down the weapons could involve upgrading the Highwind to battle/pin them down so you can fight them. The Knights of the Round could be it's own whole quest where you have to battle each knight and then at the end, end up either fighting Arthur or every freaking knight. Wutai is definitely going to get a bigger role now and certain side quests could be implemented there as well.
I still don’t understand people complaining about this remake as if it was going to erase the original. This is more than a remake, it’s a reimagining of the story and in no way replaces the original. This game WON’T ruin the original. I would suggest people that have high expectations and have a preconceived Idea of what this game has to be, to reevaluate your expectations, this will never ever live up to them. If you don’t like the fact that its episodic, don’t play it! It’s not an obligation to do it. If you love the original game so much, continue playing that one. This is a new way to experience the story, a longer way, better looking with expanded story, i’m happy that they’re willing to give me more of the characters I love while keeping the scent and feeling of the original game in there. There’s a Kotaku editor that I won’t name that just complains too much about it. Dude, don’t play it! Or accept what it is, and just enjoy it for what it is! People have expectations that are just ridiculous. Enjoy what you get, don’t ruin it for other people by moaning and bitching about what you didn’t get.

I have SUCH a gripe with the subtitles in this game! I'm a professional movie/TV subtitler. Been playing this game for a bit now, and it's infuriating how the actual translation is great (I also speak Japanese), but the subtitles are technically awful. Line breaks are useless, timing (or spotting) is unintuitive, and yes, why couldn't they have just had a professional subtitler actually look over the damn things before release. Someone told me video games are usually done in MemoQ, which doesn't have line breaks or spotting, which explains a lot. ANYWAY Thanks for mentioning the subtitles XD

Does anyone know the name of this music? (The NFL stuff)

@Arctic @Gawan King Thanks. :)
In which a man pretends to review a game that isn't out yet while actually reviewing Witcher 3 four years too late.

Where is Tim these days? I'd love to hear his thoughts on Remake.
He’ll be releasing his review on Monday, you can see his twitter to catch up with him!
bambina thanks!
Why did everyone leave kotaku
0:35 You had me at *"HELLO."*
Elsewhere?! Someday?!
"This game is going to supremely disappoint me. I have never been more excited!" ~Tim Rodgers
Me: im sick, nothing worked today, missed my train, came home and my precious gaming projector died
Tim: throwing a healing potion of extra content
Me: going to sleep smiling
15:35 OH NOOOOOOOOO
Congratulations on leaving Kotaku. Good luck on your solo career. We are rooting for you. :)
"I will FOREVER-GAME this beast!"
And then he did
The Tim Rogers

Brilliant and entertaining as always Tim, thank you for gifting us with these treats.
ANYWAY Thanks for mentioning the subtitles XD
thx for all the amazing videos u legend
Luv how these Pre-Reviews are the full antithesis of his Spoiler-Free life choices
spot on
I can't help but smile while I watch these videos. Like, smile for the entire freaking 30 minutes, like a freaking weirdo.
I don't wait until the end of a Tim Rogers video to decide if I like that Tim Rogers video. Drawing from my ten+ years of TH-cam watching experience, I can tell 10 seconds into a Tim Rogers video that I'm going to love that Tim Rogers video.
tim, don't ever stop making these videos
Sooooo do we get a tim rodgers post review
Whenever I get around to building an AI journalist, I’m going to model it after Tim Rogers because, damn it all, I want my business news delivered this way too.
Is it just me, or is the volume on these Kotaku videos super low?
"No one has made a sidequest as good as the sidequests in the Witcher III except for the makers of the Witcher III."
Not even Obsidian Entertainment, creators of Fallout: New Vegas?
Well you where spot on about Johnny! @10:50
"Final fantasy 7 remake is not going to be as good as cyberpunk 2077" Just when you thought that time couldn't make a pre-review more irrelevant
Does Tim have a backlog of these prereviews? I feel like I'm being conditioned to expect one of these every day, and I'm here for it
goodbye tim, and thank you for everything! can't wait for #TRUCKHECK.
Hecking jim spanfeller is ruining everything, glad tim will keep producing stuff for kotaku part time though.
Also heck yes, #TRUCKHECK
These prereviews by Tim Rogers ARE GLORIOUS!!!
I cracked up at “...like it was Destiny 2, and I was someone who liked Destiny 2”
Damn.. came here to get hyped for FF7:remake and left wanting to play Witcher 3 instead!
I will Kill This Game... Every day.

The bigger question is, get part 1 in a couple of months on PS4 or wait for the inevitable complete edition on PS5 Pro? 🤔
Player One Both
Edgardo Camacho I like that...
It seems much longer than 2 years that Tim Rogers hasn't been here.
Your old hairstyle is much better.
Tim Rogers is what would happen if The Tick and Xavier: Renegade Angel somehow copulated
“Both an understatement and an overstatement” is the new “it’s not NOT”
15:35 oops
Tim Rogers might just have one of the most epic voices ever.
My favorite part of these is getting to see Tim crack up at his own jokes.
I tried, I really really tried to like The Witcher 3, but I just didn't. Is there something wrong with me?
