Fury is a 2014 American war film written, directed, and co-produced by David Ayer. It stars Brad Pitt with Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, and Jon Bernthal as members of an American tank crew fighting in Nazi Germany during the final weeks of the European theater of World War II. Ayer was influenced by the service of military veterans in his family and by reading books such as Belton Y. Cooper's Death Traps, a 1998 memoir that underscores the high casualty rates suffered by American tank crews in combat against their better-equipped German counterparts.
Production began in England in early September 2013. Initial filming in Hertfordshire led to the start of principal photography in Oxfordshire on September 30, 2013. Filming continued in the city of Oxford and elsewhere and concluded on November 13, 2013. Fury was released on October 17, 2014, receiving generally positive reviews and grossing US$211 million worldwide.
In April 1945, the Western Allied invasion of Germany encountered strong resistance. Don "Wardaddy" Collier, a battle-hardened staff sergeant in the U.S. Second Armored Division, commands an M4 Sherman nicknamed Fury whose crew consisting of gunner Boyd "Bible" Swan, loader Grady "Coon-Ass" Travis, driver Trini "Gordo" Garcia, and assistant driver-bow gunner "Red" have been together since the North African campaign. After Red is killed in a tank battle, he is replaced by Private First Class Norman Ellison, a young typist clerk from V Corps.
As Fury moves deeper into Germany, the crew disdains Norman's combat inexperience and aversion to violence. While moving in a convoy, he spots but does not fire upon a group of concealed Hitler Youth child soldiers, who promptly ambush the tank column with a Panzerfaust, destroying the lead tank and killing the platoon leader and his crew. Later, he hesitates under fire from anti-tank guns. After a battle, Don orders Norman to execute a captured German soldier. When he refuses, Don wrestles his revolver into Norman's hand and forces him to pull the trigger, killing the soldier and traumatizing Norman.
After the platoon captures the small town of Kirchohsen, Don takes Norman to help search and clear an apartment, where they discover two German women - Irma and her younger cousin Emma - in hiding. After Don gives them some supplies, the women prepare a hot meal and give Don hot water for a shave. As they begin to bond, Norman and Emma retreat to the bedroom and have sex, having been prompted to do so by Don. Later, as the four sit down to eat together, the rest of Fury's crew drunkenly barges in, harassing the women and bullying Norman. The crew's resentment towards Norman leads to a tense standoff with Don before they all are called away for an urgent mission. As they depart, German artillery strikes the town and kills Emma, causing Norman to suffer a mental breakdown.
The four tank crews occupying the town receive orders to hold a vital crossroads to protect the division's vulnerable rear lines. En route, a lone German Tiger I ambushes and destroys the other three tanks before being defeated by Fury. The radio gets damaged in the battle, preventing Don from calling for reinforcements. Don decides that he and his crew must continue the mission alone. When they arrive at the crossroads, Fury is immobilized by a landmine. While the tank is being repaired, Don sends Norman to scout a nearby hill, where he spots a battalion of Waffen-SS marching towards Fury's position. He returns to inform the crew, and they plan to retreat, but ultimately stay to help Don hold the crossroads after he refuses to leave.
The men disguise Fury to make it appear destroyed and hide inside. While they wait to make their final stand, Norman is nicknamed "Machine" as the crew members finally express their acceptance of him. They then ambush the Germans, inflicting heavy casualties. As a vicious and protracted battle ensues, Grady is killed by a Panzerfaust shot that penetrates the turret; Gordo is shot while unpinning a grenade and falls back into the tank with it, subsequently sacrificing himself by covering it with his body as it explodes; and Bible is shot by a sniper. Don is wounded and retreats into the tank. Out of ammunition and surrounded, Norman considers surrendering, but Don tells Norman to escape through the floor hatch as the Germans drop grenades into the tank. Norman slips out just before they explode, and Don is killed.

Especially Grady. He just kind of comes off as a prick for a good half of the film but the scene where hes telling don about how worried he is about making it back recontexualizes it.
He's taking his anxiety out on Norman cause he doesn't know how else to deal with the stress. Makes him way more sympathetic

Or is the film even better when you need to figure out their motives on your own? A striking example of how sometimes less can be more?
The additional scenes are all interesting, but quite a few are noticeably drawn out or are less perfectly acted than the rest of the film, which thrives on almost always keeping the pace up. A quiet scene, like the one at the dinner table, seems so intense precisely because the film otherwise never takes breaks.
Given the film's theme, the wording shouldn't sound macabre, but one of the first and most important guiding principles when writing is: Kill your darlings! Which means nothing other than that you should examine the scenes that are particularly close to your heart most urgently to see whether they only stand for themselves or also advance the story.
The film is almost perfect as it is. Precisely because the cut was so courageous to focus on the essentials.

The final edit of the original movie is always well thought out to somebody's idea of time constraints, but more importantly, leaving you with some interpretation of how you imagined the backstroke of some characters. It can make or break a movie from being 'pretty good' to some golden masterpiece. The original movie was a compromise of sorts, but truly worked, as it made you invest in thier characters.

Pitt is 51 in his movie but almost doesn't look it. His character must be in his 20s, maybe 30s, considering his brother was 16 just before the war. Ayer originally wrote Wardaddy as mid 20s but looking much older due to stress of the war. Ain't no way Ayer was going to pass up on Pitt, so they probably said "fuck it" and cut out the backstory to keep Wardaddy's age a mystery. Wardaddy's backstory perfectly explains his grim nihilistic and realistic outlook on the war, I do wish someone cuts up an extended cut with all the extra scenes back in.

Out of all these scenes the two they really should have kept in was at the dinner table when Gordo started talking about the horses at Faliase Gap and he and Bible started crying along with Gordon. That added a dimension to them that made them more like real people with feelings instead of a bunch of killing machines who had no emotions about what they went through. When he said that all day and night you could hear the shots of men putting the horse out of their misery and it sounded like babies crying, it added so much that the other scenes did not, and that was in such sharp contrast to the officer (who in the movie said, I know who you are and what you are capable of) getting morally wounded in the shelling and War Daddy just walking away like it was nothing, back to the every second reality of one man standing next to another and in an instant, there is only one left.

That was the biggest military slaughter in the Western front. It would be odd that a man would come away from that unmoved unless he was a sociopath or psychopath.
Fury would probably have taken up positions on the American side of the solid wall of men and machines and been there for perhaps 3 or 4 days, first firing into retreating Germans then making sure that no small German groups passed through the line after the fighting stopped.

I even think it's a striking example of how sometimes less can be more.
The additional scenes are all interesting, but quite a few are noticeably drawn out or are less perfectly acted than the rest of the film, which thrives on almost always keeping the pace up. A quiet scene, like the one at the dinner table, seems so intense precisely because the film otherwise never takes breaks.
The omission of background information also increases the intensity because you have to sense and feel the reasons for the protagonists' roughness yourself.

Super curious as to why some scenes were cut. The Horses scene tho...both versions super moving.

jesus, all these deleted scenes make up for an entire movie in of itself. i wish the director kept all of these scenes in, and gave us a 3 hour epic. I would happily enjoy every minute. or, at the very least, split into 2 parts. and i think that would work.
This is one of Brad Pitt's best movies hands down. Excellent portrayal of these characters from all actors whom are all incredible in their roles.

The scene where Norman and Don are seated at the table with the girl and woman always hits me hard. It’s where you see Don’s true fatherly platoon leader side step in outside of being activated in situations where it directly calls for it via combat etc. Men like him are why I stopped being a heathen and try to be a gentleman now. Much love, thank you for sharing these.

Granted I still have me heathen moments that I wish I would not act out on but nothing to the likes of what it used to be.

SO, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO RELEASE THE DIRECTOR'S CUT???
YOU KNOW THAT MANY MANY PEOPLE WANT IT, AND WOULD BUY IT. IT WOULD MAKE THIS FILM BE WHAT IT SHOULD BE, AND GIVE THE CHARACTERS DEPTH AND MORE HUMANITY AND REALITY.
    PLEASE PUT IT OUT!
    THANK YOU!!

That damn scene with the tank crew cutting it up outside the tanks hatch. Then silence ..... only too subtle when just a moment ago, relive in a moment to escape the coming horror. But that dialogue was hilarious.

Definitely a Hollywood decision to cut this…. I don’t think anyone would have complained about running time.
This was perfect adaptation too war.
    It fucking sucks.

when i was a replacement to my Inf Bn in Viet,,an old guy took us to see a dead VC under a tarp,,,he had been hit in the chest by a 40mm grenade,,the half left of him was an awakening in the first few days,,
unfortunatly the deletions were replaced in the film by,,"time out for love",,

All I can say is this is one incredible fucking movie. Perhaps Brad Pitt’s finest performance too. All of them are excellent.

Someday someone will figure out from watching the wonderful deleted scenes from so many movies, that when it comes to movies with good plots and good actors, less is not more

So…what have we learnt? In the released movie they left out THE key scene…where we find out what drives Pitt’s character. Can’t believe all those movies pros sat around and thought “Nah, let’s leave that scene out. Doesn’t really add anything.”
