    You know... I've been wondering about this for like a really long time and I always suspected this but was super confused why nobody would just say it this way. Maybe this isn't accurate 100% of the time but, come on, this has GOT to be correct 99% of the time :) Thanks so much!

      Hi Thomas, thanks for your kind words. Somehow people have gotten used to hiding behind technical jargons. My aim has been to make it simple and easy for beginners. And being concrete also helps experts - i have used this concept in a lot of complex/advanced scenarios and found it useful...

    But CustomerID is consider as dimension as it have no.s though it’s considered as dimension. So calling only number is not reasonable.

    So wrong! All numbers aren't measures. Measures are things you want to MEASURE (find avg, median, trend line). Emp Number in the video is a Dimension. Since you don't want to take an average employee number, it's therefore a Dimension.

    • @tableaupro3233

      A number can behave as a dimension - I explain and use this concept in later videos. I do understand what you are saying - humans can know the meaning of a field like Emp Number that it stores numbers that should not be aggregated. But Tools like Tableau take a simplistic approach and categorizes any number as a measure. Then, we can always move them to Dimension when we have cases like IDs and other numbers which do not need to be aggregated.

    What about all my data is number? ....no dimensions then?

    • @tableaupro3233
      @tableaupro3233  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not seen any dataset where there are only numbers. There would always be some dimension - may be some of your numbers are IDs which then point to master data table which would then act as dimension - can you plz provide some more context to help me understand?

    Simplest explanation? Unfortunately, it’s *_over_* simplified, and quite misleading in 2 ways:
    ● Most importantly, employee number is a *_dimension,_* not a measure (as stated near 0:44). It wouldn’t be meaningful to aggregate employee number with SUM() or similar, as would be the case if it was a measure. (And if you open a data source containing a field called something like _Emp Number,_ Tableau’s smart enough to treat it as a dimension - these days at least; can’t speak for the version back in 2016.)
    ● Tableau uses blue and green to distinguish between discrete and continuous values (not between dimensions and measures). That becomes apparent when you right-click on a field and choose to convert between discrete and continuous - the colour changes to blue or green to match your choice.

      Hi Craig, thanks for taking the time to post pointing out the potential holes in my argument. This video is about generalizing and giving a big picture view - there are nuances to measure and dimension that is not expressed in this simple explanation - I cover all these in details in a series of videos about Blue and Green here - th-cam.com/video/RCr_F9Cq_Js/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TableauPro
